Moody: What’s Missing in the Turn to Paul 212 KATHARINE SARAH MOODY Independent Scholar WHAT’S MISSING IN THE TURN TO PAUL?: IDENTITY AND DIFFERENCE IN POSTSECULAR THEOLOGY Introduction here is more than one spirit of Saint Paul, and more than one way that interpretative communities have attempted to possess his body of work. Like any religious or cultural legacy, ‘Paul’ names a heterogeneous T 1 inheritance from which we must choose and decide. He can be androcentric, misogynistic, sexist, homophobic, and the figure not only of hetero-patriarchy but also of Christian imperialism, supersessionism and anti-Semitism. But he can also be a proto-feminist with a vision of egalitarian life beyond positional identities, oppositional binaries and hierarchical differences, or a political militant who founds a new universalism beyond inessential identitarian distinctions and divisions: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female, for all are one in Christ” (Gal. 3:28). The turn to Paul has provided several contemporary thinkers with the means to further reflect upon concepts central to their work, and they often deploy Paul as a religious exemplar of their own secular projects, complicating this distinction. Their Pauls, and their Paulinisms, emerge against the backdrop of what Ward Blanton calls the “negotiation or contestation of the received and yet perhaps still malleable borders” between religion and the secular;2 in other words, against the backdrop of postsecularity. Discussions about the postsecular occur within and between a variety of humanities and social sciences disciplines, but the location of postsecular discourse at the intersection of theology and philosophy results in what Anthony Paul Smith and Daniel Whistler characterize as the “theologization” of the postsecular – the asymmetrical “contamination” of philosophy by normative theology, mutating into the promise of the postsecular to name the political 1 See Jacques Derrida, Specters of Marx: The State of the Debt, the Work of Mourning and the New International, Peggy Kamuf, trans. -

Genealogy and Political Theology: On Method in Agamben’s The Kingdom and the Glory by Adam Kotsko Shimer College The field of political theology has not yet been rigorously defined. It is more a field of affinities than a clearly delineated disciplinary space—a kind of “zone of indistinction” between theology and political theory where the terms of debate are still very much up for grabs. Even as the range and shape of political theology as a field of inquiry remain somewhat inchoate, however, there are points of reference that already seem more or less obvious or obligatory. The work of Giorgio Agamben is surely one of them, a status that The Kingdom and the Glory will just as surely reinforce. 1 Rarely has the work of documenting parallels between the political and the theological been carried to such a fine-grained level. Where much work in this field focuses on the sovereign decision and its analogies with the acts of God, here we are treated to visions of angels as God’s middle managers and of political ceremony as an echo of the acclamation that calls divinity into being. Yet at the same time as the analogy on which the field of political theology depends is filled in with such detail, the very notion of “political theology” (as developed by Carl Schmitt) is displaced in favor of the competing paradigm of “theological economy” (associated with Erik Peterson), and the miraculous “state of exception” fades in importance when compared to the providential “invisible hand.” By the end of Agamben’s analysis, it seems that the exemplary figure for what we call political theology is no longer the sovereign president, with his power to declare alleged terrorists homo sacer , but the technocratic central banker, whose invisible hand moves the entire economy through actions that few notice or understand. -

Its nodal point is Thomas Bayes, after whom Laplace names the primal probability algorithm. It reconsiders their mathematical innovations with Laplace's providential deism and Bayes' singular theological treatise. Conceptions of divine justice one finds among probability theorists play no small part in the algorithmic data-mining and microtargeting of Cambridge Analytica. Theological traces within mathematical computation are emphasized as the vantage over large numbers shifts to weights beyond enumeration in probability theory. -

Among the philosophers who have decisively influenced the emergent subdiscipline of political theology, Giorgio Agamben is surely a leading figure. His path breaking investigations of the structure of political sovereignty—and of the “bare life” that is its necessary correlate— have been an indispensable reference point for those seeking to fill out the implications of Carl Schmitt’s dictum that “all significant concepts of the modern theory of the state are secularized theological concepts.” In his recent book Il Regno e la Gloria —or, The Kingdom and the Glory —Agamben expands on his political theory while simultaneously deepening his engagement with the Christian theological tradition, tracing the roots of modern parliamentary democracy to an unexpected source: the concept of divine providence as developed in the patristic and medieval periods. i Basing his investigation in the notion of the “economy of salvation,” Agamben argues that the theological tradition served as a kind of incubator for a notion of governance based in flexible management rather than sovereign decree—a form of government that is intimately familiar to all of us as the technocratic effort to constitute a realm of “incentives” that will gently “nudge” self-seeking human agents to serve the greater good. The infamous “invisible hand” then turns out to be nothing but the state itself, modeling itself after the providential working of God, who respects free will but nonetheless ensures that “all things work together for our good.” Crucial to Agamben’s investigation is the field of theology that has become a byword for the excesses of scholasticism: angelology. -

Review While the “guiding question” of Adam Kotsko’s The Prince of this World is the “problem of evil” (110), his purpose in this well-organized and highly accessible text is more of an archaeological dig into the “subterranean legacy” of the devil than it is a systematic phenomenology of the diabolical. At turns theological, anthropological, and historical, Kotsko’s rich interdisciplinary study is best described as a work in political theology, “a genealogical investigation that aims to expose the unexpected theological roots of modern political concepts” (164).
