Profesor Asociado, Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Apartado 7495, Bogotá D.C., Colombia [email protected] Abstract The new myrmicine genus Tyrannomyrmex is described based on a solitary worker from Negri Sembilam, Malaysia. The principal traits of the ant are mandibles with two teeth, inner modified setae on the ventral margin of mandibles, and mesosoma devoid of any groove or suture. This new genus somewhat resembles the Adelomyrmex genus-group (particularly Baracidris from Africa) especially because of the modified setae; the structure is different, however (cylindric in Tyranno- myrmex, spatulate in Adelomyrmex genus-group) and the similarity may be a convergence. The antennal and clypeal configuration, as well as tooth number, distance the genus from the adelomyr- mecines. The genus is described from a single species, T. rex n. sp., from Malaysia. A discussion of the affinities with Adelomyrmex genus-group is presented. Key words: Ants, Formicidae, Malaysia, Tyrannomyrmex rex Introduction Although there have been advances in the systematics and phylogeny of some ant groups, we are still far from a complete understanding of the taxonomy and phylogeny of the ants (Brown, 2000). This is especially true for the subfamily Myrmicinae, for which there are no modern proposals for the internal classification of its component species. With a few exceptions, we do no know the limits or relationships of most of the proposed supraspe- cific taxa, thus unfortunately the genus described here cannot be placed reliably in a tribe or genus group. -

This army ant syndrome underlies the ecological success of army ants and its evolution has been the subject of considerable debate. It has been argued to have arisen once or multiple times within the ant subfamily Dorylinae. To address this question in a phylogenetic framework I generated data from 2166 loci and a comprehensive taxon sampling representing all 27 genera and 155 or approximately 22% of doryline species. -

NGNEGUEU & Alain DEJEAN Abstract Atopomyrmex mocquerysi ANDRÉ, 1889 is a West-Central African wood-excavating myrmicine species whose colonies construct galleries in the main live branches of their host trees, causing the distal parts of these branches to dry out. In southeastern Cameroon, this species was mainly found in woody savannahs that are burned annually. It was also present in the canopy of a secondary forest, but was relatively rare on trees growing along forest edges and entirely absent from the canopy of an old-growth forest. It was absent from oil palm and coffee tree plantations, rare on cocoa trees, present on 0.2% to 5.3% of the avocado, guava, mango and Citrus spp. trees monitored, and frequent on safoo trees (12.4%). A fire in a mango plantation seems to have favored its presence. The colonies generally exploit Aleyrodidae, Aphididae, Coccidae, and Stictococcidae. Workers forage for prey diurnally, mostly on the ground. Their predatory behavior is characterized by detection through contact. Workers recruit nestmates at short-range (within range of an alarm pheromone), rarely at long-range, after which they spread-eagle the prey and immediately cut it up on the spot. Individual workers retrieve the prey pieces. Unlike other territorially-dominant arboreal ants, A. mocquerysi is a threat to host trees because, in addi- tion to being a wood-excavating species, its workers only slightly protect the foliage of their host tree from herbivorous insects since they mostly hunt on the ground. -

Peeters3 Received: 7 August 2018 / Revised: 5 January 2019 / Accepted: 10 January 2019 / Published online: 21 January 2019 © International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI) 2019 Abstract Rhopalomastix is a myrmicine ant distributed throughout tropical parts of Asia, with almost nothing known about its biol- ogy. Its closest relative Melissotarsus in Africa is the only ant genus known to live with diaspidid scale insects inside their nests, and to rely on these for food. Twelve colonies of four species of Rhopalomastix were sampled from seven tree genera in Singapore. Ants chewed tunnels under live bark, and these were occupied by many diaspidids belonging to five genera; at least two species are known to also live freely on the outside of trees. Inside ant nests, only a few diaspidids secreted their trademark shields. The association with the pupillarial Fiorinia is unexpected, since they have fewer secretions that can be used as food by the ants. Rhopalomastix and Melissotarsus workers share several morphological adaptations, including powerful mandibles and silk glands, but while the legs of Melissotarsus are modified for traction during tunnelling, those of Rhopalomastix are not. Consequently, Rhopalomastix workers are able to walk outside their tunnels, but they behaved timidly except in R. murphyi. Silk was used to repair damaged tunnels, and the spinning behaviour resembled that of Melis- sotarsus. -

Abstract. This study investigates the evolutionary history of a hyperdiverse clade, the ant subfamily Myrmicinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), based on analyses of a data matrix comprising 251 species and 11 nuclear gene fragments. Under both maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods of inference, we recover a robust phylogeny that reveals six major clades of Myrmicinae, here treated as newly defined tribes and occur- ring as a pectinate series: Myrmicini, Pogonomyrmecini trib.n., Stenammini, Solenop- sidini, Attini and Crematogastrini. Because we condense the former 25 myrmicine tribes into a new six-tribe scheme, membership in some tribes is now notably different, espe- cially regarding Attini. We demonstrate that the monotypic genus Ankylomyrma is nei- ther in the Myrmicinae nor even a member of the more inclusive formicoid clade – rather it is a poneroid ant, sister to the genus Tatuidris (Agroecomyrmecinae). -

The new species is similar to another Dominican amber species: Pheidole tethepa Wilson. This latter species has been re- examined and re-described. The two Dominican Pheidole appear to be closely related to each other but show no clear relationships to any Neotropical members of the genus. Their nearest relatives are a few Recent species restricted to the Malayan, Australian and Oceanian regions. This is regarded as an evident new example for the presence of Old World elements in the Dominican amber fauna, a biogeographic aspect vi^hich cannot be neglected. A previously established biogeographic analysis of the West Indian ants in which this fact had been omitted (Wilson 1985, 1988) is re-examined and its conclusions are shown to be untenable: Old World ant genera present on Hispaniola show no evidence either of dispersal or of survival capacities greater than Neotropical ones. -

The new genus Kempfi dris gen. nov. is described based on the workers of a single species, K. inusualis comb. nov., from Brazil, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Kempfi dris inusualis comb. nov. was originally described by Fernández (2007) and provisionally placed in Monomorium awaiting a better understanding of the internal relationships in Myrmicinae. Kempfi dris gen. nov. has a series of distinctive morphological characters including the mandibular confi guration, vestibulate propodeal spiracle, propodeal carinae, and cylindrical micro-pegs on the posteromedian portion of abdominal tergum VI and anteromedian portion of abdominal tergum VII. -

Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi guru dan peserta didik dalam proses belajar dan mengajar. Khususnya pada materi keanekaragaman makhluk hudup SMA kelas X. Penalitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan menggunakan teknik purposiv sampling, pengamatan secara langsung atau melihat keadaan yang memungkinkan adanya seabaran semut pada wilayah penelitian. Penelitan ini dilaksanakan di wilayah kampus UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Penangkapan semut menggunakan perangkap fit fall trap (perangkap sumuran) dan menggunakakn teknik jelajah. Hasil penagamatan diidentifikasi di laboratorium, kemudian dihitung dengan menggunakan, besar frekuensi sebaran (f) dan indeks keanekaragaman (Shanon Weiner). Hasil penelitian menunjukan Semut yang ditemukan pada wilayah kampus UIN Raden Intan lampung terdapat 9 jenis yang terdiri dari 4 genus Myrmicinae. Genus Solenopsis sp. memiliki indeks keanekaragaman (H‟) 0,35 dengan frekuensi sebaran 50%.
