(please kneel or stand and observe a time of silence for self-examination.)

P: Most merciful God, C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. C: Amen.

First Lesson: :1-5 (Timothy Joins Paul and )

16 Paul came also to and to . A was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 He was well spoken of by the brothers[b] at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 71:15-24 (read responsively)

L:15 My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. C:16 With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. L:17 O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. C:18 So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. L:19 Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you? C:20 You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. L:21 You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. C:22 I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praises to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. L:23 My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed. C:24 And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt.

Second Lesson: :11-16 (Fight the Good Fight of Faith) 11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before[a] made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. *The Proper Preface § P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, though Christ our Lord. In the blessedness of your saints including Timothy, you have given us a glorious pledge of the hope of our calling; that, moved by their witness and supported by their fellowship, we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us and with them receive the unfading crown of glory. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join in their unending hymn, saying: *The Sanctus (spoken): C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow’r and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna, in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. *Eucharistic Prayer #33 P: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son that all those who believe in him should not perish but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper. C: Amen. Come Lord Jesus. *The Words of Institution

*The Lord’s Prayer *P: Lord remember us in your Kingdom and teach us to pray… All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Thought of the day: The call of God is serious business. It is rooted in God’s desire for all people to know Him and be in a loving relationship with him. Those who are called are sent out to fish for people, the people God loves. This call is an urgent one. It cannot wait. And it’s not about us — it’s about Jesus reconciling the whole world to the Father, who sent his Son to usher in the Kingdom of God in the here and now.

Women of the Word Women of the Word will not be meeting in January due to the rise in Covid 19. We invite all ladies to join us in our time of study and fellowship once we start meeting again.

The Men’s group is not meeting in January. We will resume meetings when the community spread of COVID 19 starts to decline. SPECIAL APPEAL FOR January MIVO Foundation MIVO’S mission, which is: “to serve the people of Haiti by offering treatment options for Orthopedic problems. Consistent with a Christian faith, we believe these problems are physical, emotional, and spiritual illnesses. Through Christ-centered care, we integrate these aspects of life to enhance a path to recovery, offering hope from a biblical perspective.” This service is best exemplified through real life fact and example. With each passing year, the MIVO Foundation expands our reach as God expands our impact. We have been able to perform critically needed surgeries such as re-alignment & fixation of broken bones as well as removal of infected hardware in patients’ limbs, thus offering hope of returning to independent, productive lifestyles. By partnering with MIVO, you are truly helping to open the doors of possibility for future patients. Your gift is a tangible investment, which will enable us to maintain the clinic’s operation year-round as well as help us to prepare for the expansions which God has sent before us. Thank you, too, for your prayers as MIVO strives to reach more and more people for Christ here in the United States and in Haiti. Funds to date: $721.00 Bible Study for January One of the enriching features of church life is our common desire to delve further into the Holy Scriptures. This spring we will be looking at the books of First and Second Peter. God’s word has great inspiration for our times of suffering and reminds us always to be compassionate to others in their times of need. There is great encouragement in these books to maintain faithfulness in the face of temptations and to look for Christ’s coming again. So join us in person or by Zoom on Thursdays, the morning session is held here at the church in the Parlor at 10AM (Zoom is also available), the evening Zoom session is held at 7PM, the invitation to which will be included in the Wednesday and Thursday daily devotion e-mail for that week. The Bible Sessions will be held on January 28

We are not having our regular Sunday School classes at this time. We will hopefully start back up in February. We will be monitoring the Covid situation and will respond as advised.

OUR DAILY BREAD Our dessert for February is blueberry muffins. We need 30 dozen by 9 am on Friday, Feb.19th, individually wrapped. If you can contribute some muffins, please contact Kate Frye at 792-1650. Thank you!

Sermon Notes for January 24, 2021 O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds- Psalm 71:17 Our study of family genealogies reminds us that we have much to learn about our ancestors and that our knowledge of them varies greatly from person to person. Similarly, our knowledge of Biblical personages tends to be uneven, requiring us to dig deeper. The blessings that God brought to the church through Timothy are often not fully appreciated but thankfully the Biblical witness to him when carefully drawn together reveals a man, often underappreciated, who is a wonderful model of Christian faith to us all. Timothy is first mentioned in Acts 16 from Lystra, a place where a crowd could easily be stirred up, yet right away we learn that Timothy is an admired member of the local Christian church. Timothy and Paul would have spent much time discussing the faith on their travels but soon Timothy and Paul have to part ways with Paul being sent to Macedonia, and Timothy working where Paul had thought he would be evangelizing in Asia Minor. We gather as a faith community, but we are at the end of the service dismissed to many different places to multiply ministry. In Europe we see that the gifts of Timothy and Paul are not completely the same, Paul often becomes the primary target of angry crowds, he must often keep moving, Timothy though is often called to amplify and faithfully lead others into a more maturing faith, but his work reflects and compliments Paul’s. Notice how Paul strongly credits Timothy with influencing the writing of five of his thirteen letters. Eventually Timothy becomes the actual of , the overseer of overseers, not an easy task in that still largely pagan city, he is charged with maintaining a steady and firm faithfulness, to be a good example and shepherd to this flock, Paul is confident he can be. We are entrusted to with the holy and precious work of God even unto death as was Timothy. Paul’s message to Timothy is that God will sustain him in his ministry. Timothy is a saint for our time, one who behind the scenes faithfully and sacrificially supported the work of the church in and out of season to the glory of God!

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” Mark 1:17 (CEV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS: A Prayer for the Week: Lord Jesus, we want to follow you. Make us fishers of people. Amen.

Mealtime Prayer: Come, Spirit of God, and make this food sweet. Give strength to our hands and guide our feet. Amen.

A Blessing to Give: May God be your King and help you to follow his Son. Amen.

CARING CONVERSATION: Discuss in your household or small group: • Have you given up something to follow Jesus? Share your story. • What did Simon, Andrew, James and John give up to follow Jesus? How do you think they felt? • What does it mean to be a “fisher of people”?

DEVOTIONS: In your home devotional times this week, pray for people who do not know Jesus. Make a list of names (perhaps in the shape of a fish!) and pray for each of the people in turn. Reproduce the list for each household member to carry with them during the week.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS: For many centuries, the fish has been an important Christian symbol. In times of the early church, it was dangerous to be known as a Christian in some parts of the Roman Empire; so, believers developed a code language to reveal their faith to others who were Christian. A Christian would draw on the ground the upper half of a fish symbol. If the other person were a Christian, they would recognize this and add a second curved line to complete the drawing of a fish. • Place the fish symbol in different parts of your home to symbolize your faith in Jesus. • Go on a “chalk walk” in your local community. Use chalk to draw the fish symbol on footpaths in your neighborhood. When you do so, pray for the people who work or live nearby, that they may live with faith in Jesus. • Come up with your own household code language to symbolize your faith in Jesus.

People and issues to pray for in your devotions this week: We pray in thankfulness for all those who serve the church faithfully, supporting the ministry we all benefit from. We also pray for those mentioned today including______and ______.

Join us in the Parlor to watch the livestream March for Life beginning at 11 a.m. this Friday, the 29th.
