Hence diasporic Punjabi women face containment and oppression in the domestic space which contrasts with the culture of the adopted land and creates zones of conflict, assimilation and negotiations and they are forced to look anew at their cultural norms, identities and values. The negotiations of the hyphenated identities caught between the two worlds often leads to psychological and emotional problems both in the first and second generation women. The present paper deliberates on how women of different generations in the immigrant culture construct and deconstruct their identities and negotiate their space within the Patriarchal Punjabi culture. It looks into the Punjabi Woman’s (dis)location within English culture, in the movie Bhaji on the Beach directed by Gurinder Chadha and analyzes and critically evaluates the dynamics within the Indian Community abroad. -

A taste of the “Spicy Subcontinent”: Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Mistress of Spices ANA CRISTINA MENDES Centro de Estudos Anglísticos da Universidade Lisboa ISBN 978-972-8886-24-0 • FROM BRAZIL TO MACAO • CEAUL / ULICES 2013 ex sells, and so does exotica. As the advertising industry has extensively demonstrated, sex gets consumers’ attention, so what better promotion for Sa film, one may think, than displaying in the teaser poster a scantily clad couple lying down on a sea of red chillies? This seems to be the promotion strategy behind the poster for the film The Mistress of Spices, directed by Paul Mayeda Berges in 2005 and adapted from the novel by the same title written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. The couple on display here is made up of the Hollywood hunk Dylan McDermott and the Bollywood stunner and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, the latter the most visible leader of the so-called Bollywood invasion as she has been making inroads into Hollywood.1 Should the dazzling couple and the supply of red chillies in the teaser poster prove not to be spicy, that is, exotic and erotic enough, the prospective consumers are expected to notice on Rai’s upper body an extra trace of the exotic: the henna painting (mehndi), a temporary skin decoration most often applied on the palms and feet (not on the shoulders), traditionally worn by brides before wedding ceremonies, and whose status as cultural marker resulted in its incorporation, along with the bindi, into western fashion in the late 1990s. The association between food and sex is certainly a recurring motif in literature and cinema — one needs only to recall the novel and film Like Water for Chocolate written by Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel in 1989 and adapted to the screen by Alfonso Arau in 1993. -

Bend It Like Beckham
Bend It Like Beckham Dir. Gurinder Chadha, UK/Germany 2002, Certificate 12A Introduction Bend It Like Beckham was one of the surprise hits of 2002, making over £11,000,000 at the UK Box Office and hitting a chord with a range of audiences at cinemas. A vibrant and colourful British comedy about a young girl from a Sikh family who desperately wants to play football against the wishes of her traditional parents, the film can be seen to follow the path of other recent British-Asian films such as Bhaji on the Beach, Anita and Me and East Is East in its examination of culture clashes and family traditions. Bend It Like Beckham takes these themes and adds extra ingredients to the dish – football, Shakespearean confusions over identity and sexuality, in-jokes about both British pop culture and the Sikh way of life, and a music soundtrack mixing a range of East/West sounds and musical styles. It is also useful to look at Bend It Like Beckham within a wider context of the British Asian experience in popular culture and media, such as portrayal of Asian culture on television including Ali G, Goodness Gracious Me, families in soaps such as Coronation Street and EastEnders – even the new Walkers Crisps advert has Gary Lineker in a mini-Bollywood musical - and the Asian language, music and fashion that has now flowed into the mainstream. © Film Education 2003 1 Film Synopsis Jesminder (known as Jess) is a Sikh teenager living in Hounslow, who loves to play football. Her parents disapprove, wanting her to settle down, get a job as a lawyer and marry a nice Indian boy. -

“No one listens to Springsteen anymore. He’s history!” (Blinded by the Light): Pop-rock Music and 2000s Cinema An online symposium (Jan. 29th to Feb.26th 2021) ABSTRACTS https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/best-music-biopics/ SESSION 1 January 29, 2021 - 6-8 P.M. (Paris time, GMT + 1) Blinded by the Light: Fan culture and transnational storytelling • Keynote address: "I Want to be a Writer...": Music Fandom and Identity in Blinded By The Light (Chadha, 2019) – (Mark Duffett) • “Bruce is the direct line to all that’s true in this shitty world”: Music, Identity, and Hope in Gurinder Chadha’s Biographical Film Blinded by the Light (2019) – (Khaled Chouana) This presentation is concerned with examining the portrayal of the British Pakistani community of Luton, England during the 1980’s in Gurinder Chadha’s film Blinded by the Light (2019). It aims to investigate the different strategies adopted by the film director to link the teenagehood of British Pakistani journalist Sarfraz Manzoor as depicted in the motion picture to the music and life of American rock star Bruce Springsteen. I will show that there are parallels between the fictional character of Javed Khan, based on teenage Manzoor, and the music and career of Springsteen. The presentation argues that Chadha’s film can be considered as an unusual music biopic about Springsteen despite the fact it represents the struggle of a British Pakistani teenager who tries to find a meaning to his life. I will also suggest that the music biopic Blinded by the Light functions as a cathartic medium to Springsteen’s fans and offers a tribute to the music and career of the Boss. -
