BOURNE VICARAGE . CHURCH WALK . BOURNE . LINCS . PE10 9UQ Tel. 01778-422412

Dear Friends,

We are now in the Lenten season, having started with Ash Wednesday late in February. It is a time when winter is gradually losing its grip on the land, and early flowers are reminding us that new growth is on the way.

Those who enjoy gardening and growing vegetables will be turning their minds to what they need to do to nurture that new growth: turning over the ground, weeding, and fertilizing. The success and quality of what is sown and planted often depends upon the preparation beforehand.

And for us? Well, Lent is an opportunity to mirror spiritually that which we have undertaken physically in our garden or allotment. We are encouraged to do a sort of spiritual health-check in order to clear away the sort of clutter in our hearts and minds in order to stimulate the new life which we celebrate at Easter with our Lord’s resurrection.

If we only do one thing to prepare to greet the risen lord, it might be to try to take five or ten minutes each day in Lent to sit still with God, and to give him space to help us in dealing with those things that might be preventing us from responding to his love for us in our lives.

Start by saying the Lord’s Prayer and then be still for a few minutes.

Your Friend and Parish Priest, Fr. Chris Atkinson

Churchwardens Chat

First of all can I thank all those who have braved the wind and rain to get to Church on the stormy February Sundays. Amazingly we do not seem to have sprung too many new leaks….just the old ones getting bigger! We look forward to some settled weather when these can be looked at but we have been very fortunate.

Sunday 29th March, after a shortened Evensong, there is the Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting. Please do your best to attend. There will be vacancies on the PCC but we don’t indulge in arm twisting, so don’t be afraid that if you come you will dragged into doing something you don’t want to do…..however I do need to point out that there are several areas where extra help or even new input is needed. If you see a need you think you can fulfil or if you want to know what is needed please speak to Dudley, myself or Fr. Chis.

This year we also elect members to the Deanery Synod. Nomination forms will be available on the table next to the Font.

February has certainly lived up to its reputation as “fill dyke” but I hope that we have also had the “March winds” so that we can look forward to just “April showers”.

In fellowship Merryn and Dudley

Lead theft in our diocese

The past 12 months have been a particularly difficult year for many of our parishes due to a significant rise in lead thefts. In total, 30 churches have been targeted, and despite the arrest of four suspects in December 2019 the problem has not abated – within the first two weeks of the new year two further thefts had taken place. Lead theft is a devastating crime not only for the parish, but also for the wider community. The cost involved for the replacement of the lead using terne-coated stainless steel – a far less attractive material for metal thieves – can be considerable. Most insurers will cover the cost of a replacement roof if the church is alarmed, has SmartWater and all of the appropriate signage. Where a church doesn’t have an alarm, but has the other precautions it is likely the pay-out will be capped at around £7500. With the latter the net result is that parishes have to find the repair and reinstatement costs from a combination of church funds and charitable grant givers. On average the replacement of an aisle roof can cost in the region of £30,000, and a nave roof, with more scaffolding involved, can be as much as £70–80,000. Therefore, it is in everybody’s interests to try and minimise the risk of lead theft from a church. With this in mind, and if there is lead at your church, here is some advice: 1. Make sure that where you already have SmartWater or similar it is up to date, registered and the appropriate signage has been installed. 3. If you have an alarm ensure it is checked regularly and serviced as required. 4. Be on the alert for suspicious activity around the church and ask parishioners who live close to the church to be especially vigilant. Any suspicious activity can be reported using the police 101 number, and if you think a crime is in progress then ring 999. Further advice about lead theft can be found on the diocesan website, where there is also advice on what to do if the worst happens and who to contact in the diocesan Church Buildings department if it does. Abbey Road and Elsea Park Primary Academy’s

The Collective Worship Councillors throughout our Academy Trust work hard to regularly plan and lead Collective Worship in our 3 schools. This term the Councillors at Bourne Elsea Park were set the task of researching, planning and presenting a Collective Worship on Candlemas. Working together and voluntarily meeting during their lunchtimes, the Councillors created a colourful and very informative PowerPoint presentation which they shared

with the whole school. With the help of his Grandad, Luke, one of the Council- lors, also found a short, animated film which the school thoroughly enjoyed watching. Talking about the

Collective Worship afterwards, Sophia said “I felt really proud of myself and I felt like I achieved something because teaching the school something new felt good.” Samyu said “I felt con- fident during the Collective Worship. I like being able to inform everyone about new things. I love that about being a Collective Worship Councillor.” A few days after, in another Collective Worship, Mrs Simpson asked the school what they learnt from the Councillors about Candlemas and we are happy to report that they had remembered everything!

THE JULIAN MEETING

You are invited to join us each month for a peaceful half hour in the Abbey nd We meet on Monday March 2 2020

March – the month of expectations Part of the Lenten life, is a deeper sort of ‘grasping’ a matter of understanding- of seeing the point of life, the spiritual realism knows that life is really about giving, not getting-and-holding.

Behold my friends, the spring Is come; the earth has gladly received The embraces of the sun, And we shall soon see the results of their love (Charles Dickens)

For God alone my soul waits in silence From God comes my salvation Psalm 562.1

Reading to prepare us Let me no longer be content To live at a distance from you. In your grace kindle a desire in my heart To be more closely united to you. Fasten me to you with a loving leash of longing For a more perfect life.

Final reading Our private self- made world is come to an end; a new world appears within and around us and the impossible becomes an every day experience.

Next meeting Monday 6th April 2020

Bourne Foodbank

The volunteers at Bourne Foodbank have been extremely busy since Christmas. The New Year saw us organising and date sorting the vast amounts of donations that had been given to us. We also carried out our annual stocktake and thorough cleaning of all our shelving and storage rooms. Stock taking involves weighing everything we have … from the many tins of baked beans, soup, fish, fruit and vegetables - to the packets of pasta, biscuits, tea and snacks - as well as the jars of sauces, coffee and jam. Of course, I’ve only named a few of the items we stock. It took a group of about 6 of us around 4 hours to carry out the task. At the end of it, we were pleased to see that our record keeping was good and that all our figures were as they should be. Our data will be forwarded to The Trussell Trust, who keep a record of what happens to the donations in all their foodbanks.

Since Christmas, we have had fewer clients coming to us (which is often the case). The run up to Christmas was extremely hectic, our volunteers were hard pushed to keep up with the needs of all our clients. Housekeeping tasks (sorting and date ordering) had to wait, as our client’s needs always come first. The quiet weeks have given us the chance to catch up with everything. We are now ‘super organised’ and ready for the year ahead. Recently, a few new volunteers have joined us - they have proved to be quick learners and have bought a variety of new skills with them. All our volunteers have something different to offer. Some are extremely organised and quick at picking, packing and weighing food for our clients, others are wonderful at sitting and listening/ talking with our clients, pointing them in the right direct access further help and guidance. Also, we are all brilliant at welcoming clients and making them refreshments. It’s great that we all have something to offer when supporting clients and , at times, each other.

Thank you for continuing to support us in the work we do for those in need in our community.

‘MAD ON MADAGASCAR’

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP HALL

[email protected] [email protected]

Dear Friends in Bourne,

Sarah and I very much appreciate and thank you for your regular prayer supporting us and our work with the Church in Mahajanga as we prepare for our second year there.

There are various objectives that I wish to achieve:

My first priority is to re-establish the Mission and Evangelisation Committee so that the diocese can have a clearer focus and plan of action.

Of the eight clergy in the diocese five are not provided with housing and have to rent a room without electricity or water. None of their parishes has an income that can fully pay their priest, let alone start a building project. A purpose-built house would give them the security of a permanent home, as well as relieve them of the burden of renting a room. Thus, I plan to build five small houses.

The diocese would like to build a modest student hostel near the university to provide accommodation for poor students.

As there are no administrative costs (since the diocese has no administrative staff), any financial support for our work goes directly to the projects and is overseen by myself.

We are most grateful to you.

Together in His Service +Hall

18

How can we support Bishop Hall’s ministry?

The PCC is setting up a fund-raising scheme for the Church in Mahajanga. Donations will be by monthly standing order and limited to the duration of Bishop Hall’s tenure, estimated at two to three years.

To ensure that all those who wish to give can afford to do so on a regular basis, and because the PCC appreciates that many of you already generously support the work of this parish by regular donations, it has set an absolute maximum donation of £20 a month per contributor.

This income would enable Bishop Hall to undertake projects in line with his priorities, as set out in his message. The cost of a simple, 2-room house is £3,000, which could be raised in one year by 25 parishioners each pledging £10 a month.

A PCC bank account has been established solely for receipt of donations, so that they can be separately accounted for.

Information on the project’s progress is expected every 3 months or so, when we can see the result of our support.

I would like to join this support effort. What can I do?

Please set up a Standing Order mandate, either using the Standing Order form available from your own bank or, for those who use internet banking, electronically.

The details you require are:

Sort Code: 30-98-97 Account num- 81302268 ber: Account Name: Bourne Parochial Church Council Diocese of Mahajanga Support Fund

Your support will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Margaret’s Page

This month has been rather uneventful so I am cheating by using someone else’s ideas in the hope that they will provide you with ‘food for thought’.

Eating in Britain 50 years ago.

Pasta had not been invented. Curry was a surname. A takeaway was a mathematical problem. A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower. Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time. Rice was a milk pudding and never, never, ever part of our dinner. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. Brown bread was something only poor people ate. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking. Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green. Coffee was Camp and came in a bottle. Cubed sugar was regarded as posh. Fish didn’t have fingers in those days. Eating raw fish was called poverty not sushi. None of us had ever heard of yoghurt. Healthy food consisted of anything edible. People who didn’t peel potatoes were regarded as lazy. Indian restaurants were only found in India. Cooking outside was called camping. Seaweed was not a recognised food. Prunes were medicinal. Muesli was readily available; it was called cattle food. Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only seen pictures of real ones. All crisps were plain; the only choice we had was whether to put the salt on or not. Water came out of a tap; if anyone had suggested putting it in a tap and charging more than petrol for it they would have become a laughing stock.

The one thing we never had on our table in the fifties was elbows!

Nature Notes from Bourne Woods- March 2020

The woods are rarely silent! At times there is the background roar of the wind as it buffets the tree-tops, sheltering us down below from the worst of the elements. As the inclement weather passes the birdsong re-ignites as the male great tits and blue tits compete to be the most noticeable by potential mates. Their songs remind us that spring is around the corner. If this year follows the pattern of all the other preceding years, they will soon be joined by the multiple calls of the summer migrants. As these arrive they fill the air with fancy warbles and trills which our native birds tend not bother with. I look forward to the symphony of bird music but there is some uncertainty and competitiveness- who will hear the first chiff-chaff? Will it be in early/ mid or late March? Might it sing a different tune? - (unlikely after all these years!) Will there be a significant delay before the willow warblers are heard too? The anticipation adds to the pleasure! As they arrive we will say “goodbye” to the few winter visitors we have had to stay. Some years we have enjoyed hundreds if not thousands of siskin and redpolls but this winter they have hardly been seen. But right now it is not too late to check the woods to see if any are passing through. I need to grab my hat and coat in order to take the dog out to see for myself. She is always ready for a walk so she is prepared to go- look! …..she has her coat on already!
