PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the 122nd Annual report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

Our club continues to maintain playing numbers across all playing levels. This is very pleasing when we know other clubs are struggling to maintain membership numbers across the City. Our team and individual playing records will be recorded later in this report, but it is pleasing to see so many batting hundreds and bowling "five fors" in our stats across all levels of the playing competition.

During the off season your committee has been very busy as usual. We have been occupied also with three main activities.

Firstly as you can see our grounds are finally being upgraded. The outfields are being re- drained and new irrigation systems installed. They are re-laid on a sand based turf offering excellent drainage but a soft carpet like surface. The blocks have all been excavated and replaced with AP60 fine shingle and then topped off with Heathcote loam. Of special significance is the development of our new 28 metre grass practice blocks. This is a fantastic facility. Not only will it supply 12- 14 lanes of cricket , but we have designed a mobile adjustable lane changer, enabling us to rest and recover lanes by easily switching the lane dividers along a fixed rear mesh wall anchored by set in poles-all of which are also relocatable as they are set in sleeves. All of the blocks on the Park will be of international quality, and the new high pressure irrigation facility will ensure even fine spray watering with preset watering timers.

Secondly, Sydenham Club will be taking back the responsibilities and control of youth cricket in the south west zone of Christchurch. The South West Youth Cricket group will formally disband at the end of this calendar year and will revert to Sydenham youth cricket. During the spring and pre xmas we will be active with coaching programmes in all of our local high schools and setting up team managers in anticipation of this handover at Christmas. It is hoped that with this initiative we can re-engage with our youth players and provide coaching programmes and clear pathways for these guys to carry on with their cricket beyond high school into adult cricket.

Thirdly during the winter a number of our membership met over a couple of sessions to review and update our 5 year strategic plan. This is hugely important work as it sets the framework of what we need to do as a club in order to meet the needs of our membership going forward.

I think it is obvious that we have made huge progress over the last 5 years post- earthquake over a number of key areas. -Facilities. -Player, recruitment and development. -improved communication both within and outside the club, particularly with website and newsletter initiatives.

However these things don‟t happen with implementing an agreed plan. Here is a brief headline of where we would like to go within the next three to four years. ………………………………………………………….

There is much to do, but we know that if you fail to plan you plan to fail

Finally I must make mention of the work your committee does week after week, month after month keeping our club functioning smoothly. To all of my committee my heartfelt thanks for your work. It is true that without your efforts we would not be the club we are today.

I would also like to acknowledge the charity funders who provide valuable funds to assist our club to sustain itself financially. Air Reuse Services Pub Charity Southern Trust NZCT Rata Foundation CCC small grants foundation Christchurch Metro Cricket Coaching Grants Cricket Express. and also a huge thank you to our commercial Sponsors. CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Again this season we gained the services of several youth players and with the influx of new players through the grades we have been able to put a total of 12 teams on the field. By far the biggest club in the South Island. A special thanks to all the captains for there efforts over the season. Not an easy job at the best of times but certainly were a great support to the committee and the way they supported the Sydenham Club. From getting there teams on the field, the dreaded job of collecting the subs, doing the raffles and providing players to other sides when needed. They are certainly the back bone of the club, many having done that role for many a year.

Congratulations to our 3D Cardinals team who won the grade in the round robin competition only to have the final washed out. This will see them promoted up to 3C next season. Both the Div 1 girls and the Prem Men won their T20 competitions earlier in the season. Well done to all the other teams for their efforts over the season.

Well sadly the season ended the way it started. WET!! But as cricket wasn‟t cancelled many of our teams were still able to play on the last day of the season. And on one of those rare occasions the top individual performances with bat and ball were decided on the last day of season. Rohan Jangam continued his innings from the previous week in their two day match against BWU to be 207 when play was called off. And Carolyn Esterhuizen captured the stunning figures of 7/2 as the Prem Women rolled St Albans for 16 and recorded an easy win.

The prize giving lived up to its usual standard with a good turnout in the clubrooms and the usual post prize giving antics. Several trophies were again not decided until the last day of the season. Well done to all the winners. Thanks to everyone who also supported the quiz nights, the golf tournament, and the bar over the season. These bring in much needed funds for the club.

A big thanks to the committee and helpers for all their hard work over the season. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep the club up and running especially with the size of our club.

Finally a big thanks to our outgoing Women‟ Club Captain. Emma Scarf has moved to Australia and we wish her well in her time there. Emma was heavily involved in the club at all levels. Besides being Club Captain she also filled the role as captain of the Prem Women‟s side up till last season and was in charge of the coaching for the junior club.

We now look to the off season and the redevelopment of Sydenham Park over the winter months. I sure there will be no arguments over losing part of next season to have the park repaired. For those who are not aware the earthquakes damaged the drainage and left the outfield in rather an uneven state. The whole park is being dug up, new drainage and irrigation put down and new pitches and a sand based outfield.

Remember to stay up to date with the club scene on the club website and Facebook. Have a great winter and look forward to seeing you all back next season.

Andrew Chisnall Mens Club Captain OBITUARIES

It is with great sadness that the club announce the passing of long time friend Stu Burns. Stu recently returned to score for the Premier Men's team when they were in a dire need for a scorer, such was his love of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

We pass on our sincere condolences to Stu's family and friends.

A quiz question for Bertie, who's the highest run scorer for Sydenham in its history? So ok, we gave it away in the title, but our research shows that Stu Burns has scored 72,245 runs for Sydenham over the past 20 years, be it mainly with ink rather than willow.

Although Stu has been a fixture in the Sydenham score box on and off for much of the past 35 years, his initial introduction to Sydenham was as a captain of 8th grade back in early 1970's. He was seconded to the senior scorer's role by Keith Thomson (it was brave man who said no to Keith) in 1976, the year Keith's team won the title. Stu then spent the next 19 years scoring for the senior sides until his retirement in 1995 – at that point he was being the second longest serving Christchurch scorer, a title still held by Ron Johnson when he passed away in 1992.

Stu came out of retirement last year to assist the Club in an hour of need, and will bring up his 20th year this Christmas. When asked to name his best Sydenham players of his era he choose; batsmen: Bob Carter, bowler: Ian Wilson, keeper: Ash Hart, Captain: Keith Thomson. Best innings was English professional Dexter Fitton's 125 off 151 to beat Riccarton.

There are many descriptions of Stu; always talkative (no score box is quiet when Sydenham plays you), hugely enthusiastic, sometimes controversial, but always a man deeply passionate about Sydenham and the game of cricket. He comes back at a challenging time for many scorers, with the pen and pencil in the process of being overtaken by the iPad and electronic scoring.

Stu's other fanatical interest is football. He was the Canterbury Football Association's liaison officer for 10 years in the 70's, and hosted teams such as Elton John's Watford side and players such as Kevin Keegan. He is also a huge Hull City FC fan such that in reward for him being formally recognised as their most distant overseas fan, he was hosted by the Club in 2009 to their last Premiership game, a formal dinner, and featured in their newsletter – however, anyone who's seen Stu in his gaudy yellow and purple club jacket knows that loyalty comes with a price.

Trevor Kirk played several seasons for the club including a spell in seniors in the 1954-55 season. In his time in seniors he was described as a young pace bowler with commendable spirit.

Sincere sympathies and condolences to Pat Carrick on the passing of her son Shane.

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements.

PREMIER MEN TEAM REPORT

Although there was always going to be some disappointment if the Premier Men were unable to successfully defend their two-day title this season, nevertheless the season has to be very much considered a successful one. Our form in the shorter forms of the game had been poor in recent years so this season's winning of the Metro T20 championship was a major boost. Furthermore, although we started poorly in the one-dayers, and out of contention early, the four successive victories in the final matches certainly showed our potential to do well in that competition next season.

Although OBC were eventually worthy winners of the two-day competition, our 4th placing was only 4 points off finishing second and highlighted the frustration of a couple of results that we couldn't quite get over the line, most notably our failure in the match just before Christmas to chase down 158 in the final innings against Lancaster Park on Sydenham.

Player performances were dominated by a couple of players in each discipline. Club Player of the year Ryan Wallace, together with Dylan Goldstone, scored that bulk of the runs with contributions from Chris Harris chipping in from the middle order, and Chad Bowes when away from Canterbury duties. Others showed some promising signs but not yet the consistency to be become that missing player who scores 500-600 runs in the season to complete a more dominating batting unit.

The bowling was similar with Mitch Gardner and Harry dominating the stats complemented by some useful contributions at times from others. Undoubtedly the team felt the early loss of Harshall Vyas to Auckland, and particularly Braden Gardner to injury in the second half of the season - we look forward to having Braden back fit and refreshed next season. The fielding tended to run either hot or cold, and although probably one of the better fielding teams that we've put out in recent years, the lack of fielding practice during the week was clearly obvious on a number of occasions - an easy fix for next season with some better organisation.

Chris Harris again lead from the front - the Club is indeed blessed to have a player of Harry's statue who can not only impart his wisdom on the younger players, but do so whilst playing a prominent role on the field as he remains one the competitions pre-eminent players.

So a year of consolidation after last season's two day championship victory, where we remained more than competitive in that competition, and made some major improvements in the shorter versions. With some of the younger players over the season showing some further improvement on the back of growing experience, we remain strongly placed to challenge in all titles next season.

2A GRADE TEAM REPORT

After much anticipation after such a good year of rebuilding we ended up finishing a bit flat and under performing for the season.

The season didn't start well with player numbers hard to come by at times. The results weren't to bad considering, though so we could have expected better for the rest of the year.

It was of course trying conditions throughout the year with a lot of bad weather and pitch conditions proving very difficult at times.

The two dayers started off very well with 3 good wins but after that things went down hill a bit with some disappointing losses especially against some teams we should have beaten comfortably.

Tosses were critical at times but we did let ourselves down with bat and ball with inconsistent performances.

There were however some outstanding performances so not all doom and gloom. Excellent innings from Matt and Hayden Day, Lane Tutty and Blair Brown stood out with some good cameos thrown in at times were highlights through the year. We were unlucky to miss out on the 20/20 finals. The changed format was at times hard to come to terms with especially when the wickets were so against batting.

The bowlers toiled without much luck and umpiring or lack of it cost us a number of wickets. Scott Grose, Jamie Hunt and Carl Hooper all excelled with the ball and bowled without luck at times.

We did get through to the top 5 to play off for the main championship which was a great achievement and we competed well without getting the wins we at times thought we deserved, but we still lacked that consistency to obtain the results we really were aiming for this year.

There is no reason with a good core of players remaining that we can't get through to competition winning contention for the upcoming year. There is so much potential there and I feel that the results will come with a little more dedication to training from the top teams in the club and more of a team approach from players.

It's nearly there, just need to put the finishing touches on some performances and that only comes from a bit of hard work and a slight attitude adjustment at times.

2C GRADE TEAM REPORT – SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

We had a pretty good season considering at the beginning of the season, we were most of the time relying on fill ins as we had a few players from last season drop out for personal reasons. We were lucky to have some young join the team and help out when they could. Once 2017 rolled round, we had recruited 4 or 5 players that made a massive difference to the team and the environment of the team. I felt we had a good balance of youth and experience and as it was my first year as captain, I was able to lean on the experience of other players to help out.

Highlight for the year came at the end when Rohan score a double century in the final game and I was lucky enough to be at the other end for most of that innings.

I am looking forward to another coming season and looking forward to bring the youth through the club and guide them to higher honors and hopefully challenge again for top spot on the ladder for all formats.

3B GRADE TEAM REPORT - GOATS

Played 14 won 8 lost 6 abandoned 7

The Goats 2016/17 season couldn't quite match the previous year‟s efforts but we still performed pretty well finishing in 4th place. With the bottom 6 teams from our large grade from last season dropping down to 3C the remaining 8 sides were generally quite evenly matched and we managed to beat all the sides that finished above us except Sumner at some stage of the season. The worst aspect of the season was the weather where we had 7 rained out games. This did lead to some anomalies where some sides played up to two extra games due to different conditions on different sides of town which did reflect in the points table. We lost our two Australian imports from last year, our top run scorer and leading taker, but we found other players to step up and perform in their place. Andrew Douglas and Amos Tasker both had great years with the bat, opening and batting first drop respectively, and were both among the top lower grade run scorers in the club. Amos was the rock around which a lot of our innings were built and Andy went out and played his shots in a number of attacking innings including 50 of 18 balls vs Hornby. Riki Burgess and Heath Sanders also performed well with bat highlighted by a hundred partnership to beat the defending champion Marist Harewood side, the team we couldn't beat last year. Other batting highlights included Ollie‟s unbeaten 50 in the last game where he single handedly took us from certain defeat to requiring two runs off two balls to beat the eventual grade winners, East Shirley. Unfortunately he was at the non strikers end and we lost by one run which was a disappointing way to end the season. Conversely Alex Brailey and Sam Garriocks partnership of 20 for the last wicket to beat Heathcote on a scratchy Centennial 1 pitch led to great celebrations.

The bowling was led by Michael Nicholson who came down from 2C last season and was our top wicket taker. He included two 6 wicket hauls and a bag of 5, pretty good when you are limited to 8 over‟s a day. The rest of the bowling was shared around with everyone contributing wickets throughout the season. With Alex Hewson being injured half the season and Sean Burgess having to work a lot of Saturdays some weeks we did miss another pace bowler but we were only put to the sword in one game. Other performances of note were Heaths 4-12 opening the bowling into a gale on Burnside 1 and Dougies near match winning spell vs Sumner where he took the keeping pads off as we didn't have a 5th bowler and nearly got us home, Sumner winning in the last over 9 down.

Generally we were a pretty good fielding side with Mike and the Burgess Brothers being great additions to an already sound side. Dougies keeping was great, backed up by Amos where required and we had two of the best outfielders in the grade in Tom and Alex Brailey.

Congratulations to Andrew Douglas who was our player of the year in a tight contest with Amos and Mike. After a few years with the side he stepped up to be a dominant player in the side. Good luck to Amos who is leaving us next season to try his hand up the grades. I have no doubt he will perform well in years to come and I'm sure the Goats will all be down to watch his senior debut one day soon.

The Cardinals were now in their 11th season as a semi-social-semi-professional cricket entity. Just as important as notching up a win each week, is making sure he chilly bin is full and the BBQ is manned.

Every winter claims a few more cricketers to the rigours of family, fake injuries, or the golf game. But this year a few new/returning faces gave us a pretty useful squad from the outset. By the Cardinals usual standards, the 2015/16 season had been a disappointing one, meaning a lot of blokes were keen to put things right in 2016/17.

Like most Christchurch cricketers, the season started off with a splutter and on the days we got some actual play, wins were valuable in what turned out to be a very tight grade. Early on in the season the batting form was lead by Jamie Livingstone and Ben Norman- Larter – the soggy wickets and undercooked bowlers were no match for the two stalwarts who lead the charge of a pretty useful Cardinals lineup.

It was 4 wins-2 losses by the break. A couple of absolute massacres in there, offset by a couple of close losses; one „back from the dead‟ effort by last season‟s champions New Brighton, and the other was a final over nail biter in our Hawaiian shirt-clad Christmas game against runaway leaders Marist Harewood.

By the Christmas break we were second, but with a tightly packed table breathing down our necks. The first half of the season had yielded a couple of 5 for‟s for the bowlers and Lewis Allan had stamped his mark on the batting highlights reel.

A cobbled together lineup on the first week back was no match for Merivale Pap, meaning we‟d now lost 3 out of 4 either side of the break and were suddenly 5th. What happened from there will probably go down in Cardinals history as we marched undefeated to the title from that rather precarious position.

It sounds a lot more simple than it was – the whole grade seemed to come alive once the rain stayed away, with six teams fighting for second spot behind unbeaten Marist. Each opposition seemed to have a solid lineup of top four batsmen who could chase down anything on their day, and „flexible‟ interpretations of the LBW law meant tempers flared on a regular basis.

Of the key wins, squad depth played a part in a crucial game against New Brighton. Colin Paintin pulled out his best innings of the season in scoring a valuable 40 runs when the team was in trouble and Ben Harland stepped up with 5 for to help defend the low total.

Christchurch‟s answer to Eden Park saw a cliffhanger against East Shirley. Defending our total of 260 on the small ground, we were on the canvas before clawing our way back to win in the 39th over, by just 7 runs. The grass resembled a tarmac, so heroics in the field would leave a few battle scars (literally, in Cameron Rennell‟s case), but we hung on in what was a 2nd vs 3rd fixture.

And while the season mathematically went down to the final round, it was the penultimate week where we won a top of the table clash. Marist had struggled for a couple of weeks, meaning they were within reach of the chasing pack. On the day though it was our turn to struggle, fielding a scarcely recognisable team we limped to 131/9 thanks mainly to tough innings from Cam and James Stokes. In pursuit they were 82/3 just after drinks, but in another valuable lesson about squad depth, more bowlers stepped up and suffocated the life out of the chase, finishing them off to be all out for just over 100.

What a season! It‟s unfair to single out any blokes for praise because so many turned up week-in week-out with solid performances that contributed to victory. And many of the roster chipped in their own solid performances on the handful of games they were available throughout the season, so it really was a combined effort. It was hard to stay positive against some of the opposition, but the enjoyment of the game by the lads was consistent as ever.

A congratulations to Ben Norman-Larter who picked up the MVP for the team. Ben was on top of his game more often than not, depositing match balls into neighbouring back yards or turning the screws with the ball during the middle over‟s. Perhaps best summed up in the final game of the season (which was essentially played in the rain), a bewildered Merivale-Pap batsman could only smile and shrug his shoulders as he played about half a foot inside the line of a ball that swung in then jabbed away. Larts putting it on a dime, and belying the struggles the other bowlers had with feet slipping and gripping the wet ball. Hat‟s off to you, Ben.

Special mention also to Jamie Livingstone, who in that same rainy final week took his 100th Sydenham wicket.

A thanks goes to our sponsors Becks‟ Ale House and Canterbury Glass. The team is also kindly supported both on and off the field by Maximus Apparel. And like all good social sports teams, someone has the unenviable job of herding the cats each week – big cheers to Livo.

Another Champions sticker to proudly emblazon on the trailer. Bring on 2017/18!

4A TEAM REPORT - ALLSTARS

The Sydenham Allstars returned for another season, however with depleted stocks and only three returning team members from the previous season, Abraham Atherton, Cameron Hatcher and Christopher Reeve. With the help of Sydenham Cricket, we were able to recruit more players and we could confidently field eleven players each week. The team comprised of some former youth cricketers, players new to Christchurch and some new to cricket. The season was not full of victories, however players turned up each week to give it ago and to improve from week to week. The team was not short of run scorers or wicket takers, yet the knock out punch evaded us.

Some key highlights for the season;

Three experienced wicket-keepers; Christopher Reeve, Zach Wall and Paul Jensen, kept the team in the game with excellent catching skills. They took many catches and stumpings throughout the season. Furthermore, it was rare for them to let through byes. In most cases they had a clean sheet. Gaurav Dudega was a great addition to the team with his excellent stroke play and determination at the crease. In his first game, he scored 90 runs and followed this up with a 66. Although, he did not score any more half centuries, he was consistently in the runs. Joe Bruce was a new player to cricket this season. He offered to open the batting and held this place throughout the season. Joe batted unorthodox, however when he got started he was able to score freely. He top scored with 43. Joe made many starts and this will be great for next season with more runs expected. Gourav Saini was a fantastic all-rounder. He was able to swing the ball and place the ball between the fielders when batting. Gourav had a strong first half of the season before work commitments limited his play. Gourav's highest score was 67, and he claimed three 3 wicket hauls. Zach Wall became Mr Consistent in the second half of the season. He was regularly in the runs with a top score of 72, and scoring over 36 runs five times. As the season progressed, so did his confidence and this was evident in the second half of the season. Hamish McClelland, Satvik Saini, Mark Flowerday, Cameron Hatcher and Abraham Atherton were the main bowlers throughout the season. They captured many wickets throughout the season, however the poor catching in the first part of the season allowed many more to be unclaimed. Christoper Reeve became the team's dominant spinner. Sorry Paul Jensen. Cameron Hatcher claims brilliant hattrick. Abraham Atherton claims five wicket haul - 5-13. Paul Jensen claims four catches and a stumping in one game. Christoper Reeve smashes a quick 47. Very unusual.

Although the team did not dominate in the season, there was much to be celebrated and it will be a good foundation for next season.

The Sydenham Allstars would like to thank the Sydenham Cricket Executive for all their organization and thorough communication with all teams in the club. We would like to also thank Andrew Chisnall for his commitment in finding players for our team and his communication and support of the team throughout the season.

Kind regards,

Abraham Atherton Captain

CAVALIARS T20 TEAM REPORT - BLUES

We had largely a new bunch of players from the previous season. We finished 3rd out of 25 teams but had a slow start, and mid-season we had several players out.

In our 5th -to-last game we beat the top team by 90 runs and then another team by 50 runs. After that nobody wanted to play us-we won the last 3 games by default. When everyone was available we had 10 players (T20 is 9-aside) and the player to miss out was a very good off-spinner and useful batsman.

Player of the season is our only old fellow, Hashit, who is a 36 yr old left-hand opening batsman, and he was all class.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT – CARDINALS

The 2016-17 season once again got underway with aspirations of a top four finish, and a charge for the line from there. Cardinals welcomed fresh faces in Mario Williams and Ammar Yousef, and benefited from the demise of the LPWCC President‟s side with the arrival of Paul Bennett and Gail McGowan as scorer. All proved to be massive additions to the side, not the least of which was Gail‟s professional contribution in keeping the book.

With captain of recent seasons Brenden Winder on daddy duty from midway through the season, Brendon Laughton took over captaincy duties, which may not have added much to his own season.

Phil Walker batted all season like a metronome with pads on, timing the ball well from the off, with classy innings regularly punctuated by classy drives to, and lusty blows over the boundary. Close to an elusive century in several innings, he compiled more than 500 runs for the season, and was rightly the Cardinals batsman of the year. He also won the W Patrick Memorial Cup, for the most runs in a season below first grade. Thanks to regular and often testing contributions with the ball and his energy in the field, Phil was the team‟s player of the year as well.

Ewen Spence earned the team‟s innings of the year award, and several of them would have made the cut. Finding himself often opening the innings, Spencey often batted himself almost to a standstill, making some big scores as he zeroed in on 10,000 runs for the club. He‟s still a few hundred short, and the team can‟t wait to celebrate the milestone. Craig Borcoski as always played aggressive cricket and was never short of words of encouragement – for team members, the opposition and himself. A regular contributor with the bat as well as the ball, his medium pacers often snared a much needed breakthrough and he was bowler of the season.

No surprises that the mercurial Ken Julian took the award for spell of the season for a ridiculously miserly effort full of guile, tease and temptation that earned wickets too, finishing 8-6-2-2. A contender for spell of the season would have been Anthony Wild‟s all bowled hat-trick to take the last three wickets of the season – if only an over qualified as a spell. He may also have struggled for votes for giggling like a nervous schoolgirl afterwards.

Brendon Laughton took the catch of the season – a running one-handed horizontal off the ground effort inches from the boundary that would have otherwise been a flat six. The batsman walked.

Often finding himself with the book or the team gearbag, but never short of a smile or a word of encouragement, Jagath Keerthisooriya (JK) bowled well in the often difficult middle overs, and hit his first six for the club this season. He clearly loved his cricket and was the team‟s players‟ player.

A well-rounded squad blessed with batting and bowling talent, most players stood up with key performances during the season. At least six players served behind the stumps. Challenged by unexpectedly narrow loses early on by opposition sides with new blood that in previous seasons we‟d have backed ourselves to beat, Cardinals fought hard to restore some momentum to the season and was challenging for the top four at the end of it. In Presidents cricket injury is an ever-present issue and particularly later in the season Cardinals struggled to field a competitive side – often the spectators were only slightly more injured than some of the players. In the end a particularly one-sided loss to Burnside ended our top four ambitions.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT – HOSPITAL

It was 19th Century British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who said “There are three types of lies… there are lies, damned lies and there are statistics”

Now while the stats for the Hospital team may not have made for pretty reading, that does represent a true picture of a season where the progress made off the field wasn‟t reflected on it...yet!

After playing down the importance of stats it would be most remiss not to acknowledge some individual performances over the season. Top of that list must be the team‟s player of the year Arul Reddy who led our bowling figures and was the third highest runs scorer. Highest runs scorer was Bruce Day followed closely by Tony Danenberg who reached a personal milestone by hitting his 7000th run for the club at all grades. Fielding was led by Rex Venning followed by Arul (again!) and Tony.

Where a lot of work has been done is on the recruitment front. We have come a long way in two years where we were at one point recruiting anyone just to keep the team going. Now we are looking (and succeeding) in recruiting players who will boost the overall quality of the team. As a result there is a real feeling we have turned the corner, and with that comes a sense of optimism. Personifying that upbeat way of thinking is Eugene Hawyn who we are delighted to announce will be out matchday captain for next season. This is also a good opportunity to express our appreciation of the support given by the club. The Hospital team has been in existence in one form or another since the 1930s and without the backing of Sydenham Cricket Club that tradition may have vanished.

WOMEN’S DIV 1 TEAM REPORT

Div 1 women had an enjoyable season playing in the T20 competition. They were successful in winning the Debbie Hockley T20 trophy, defeating the crafty St Albans T20 ladies in pool play to take out the honour.

The core players of this team were Alana Topping, Isla Mackenzie, Boadicea Lynch and Linda Pettigrew. They were pleased to welcome the batting strength of Rachel Pullan and game strategy of Anna-Lisa Hickson as the season progressed.

Injury and work prevented Karlissa Pierre and Danielle Dunlop from playing a larger role in the team. Fortunately they were able to call on players from the Cashmere school team and past Sydenham players to fill this gap.

The team continued its role in developing players for our premier women‟s team. Both Alana and Boadicea represented Canterbury in the South Island Primary Schools tournament while Jodie Dean, Alice Gribben and Nicole Hurd featured in the odd game to prepare them for the premier women competition.

Individual highlights for the season included 50's from Isla (2), Linda and Jodie.

Div 1 women look forward to having even more fun this season.

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all enjoying the winter season and I understand many of you are involved in winter training for cricket, indoor cricket and/or private cricket coaching sessions during these winter months. It is wonderful to be able to keep your skill level up and enjoy the sport you love in the offseason.

As many of you know our head of coaching Emma Scarf has resigned from our club to pursue adventures abroad and spend some very valuable time with her family. Sadly we have also lost the services of Ashley Cloake who is also joining Emma. Emma made a huge contribution to the development of players in our club and has been with us for over 10 years, her expertise and experience, will be missed by the committee and members. Ashley has been employed with the club for over 3 years and in the short time, made a real difference in assisting with the development of our year 7 development players and also was a great asset at our Have a Go sessions, her lovely smile and wonderful personality will be missed.

Our new head of coaching is Maria Lankswer (nee Fahey) ex white fern, who comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and expertise, coupled with the best qualifications in coaching that New Zealand has to offer, I am sure Maria will be a wonderful asset. Maria has spent the last few years coaching internationally, so it will be great to have her and her husband return to New Zealand and become part of the Sydenham community. Kay and I will be working closely with Maria to assist and support with her taking over the reigns from Emma and will also be welcoming new ideas from Maria into continuing to be the best club in Christchurch.

This season our club grew by another two teams, which takes our total up to 37 teams, which as you can imagine a huge amount of volunteer hours to successfully run our club. An enormous thank you to our wonderful co convenor Kay Male, which during the season pretty much works fulltime on communications, CriqHQ, IT and website development, she also heads up event planning and management, plus a number of other roles. Thanks to Allan Hickford, Linda Pettigrew, Mark Stewart, Chris Webb, Ivan Thomson and Michael Owens who also do a considerable amount of work to keep our club running. Also a huge thank you to Graham Harris and his team from the Sydenham Seniors for the support and guidance we receive from them

It was wonderful to see so many of our club players being selected into representative teams and fantastic to see that Sydenham again continue to dominate in rep cricket.

We continued to be successful in all grades this season and it was wonderful to see so many new players and new coaches joining our community.

Thanks to Michael Davidson and Peter Fulton from the Kings for attending our prizegiving, wonderful to have their involvement.

This season fast approaching we will see some changes to our grades, which I believe will help considerably, so Kay and I look forward to discussing these with your coaches at our coaches evening in September or October.

Looking forward to a great season.
