WICK CHURCH SIDESMEN For me November is a very thoughtful month, full of 3rd J Brookman J Barnard 10th P Russell P Milton the word “remember”. We begin with the rhyme 17th J & C Bailey 24th S Butt E Thomas “Remember, remember the fifth of November, 1st Dec A & J Hewett Gunpowder, treason and plot.” I just hope this year nobody creates too big a bang! Some fireworks are WICK CHURCH FLOWERS rather loud but these days, I prefer the coloured ones. 2nd-9th Mrs Matthews (Remembrance) 16/23rd Mrs Crossley Then only a week later we remember the fallen of two 30th/7th Mrs Milton World Wars, and all conflicts since, on Remembrance

WICK CHURCH CLEANING Sunday and Remembrance Day. 2nd Mrs Lawrence 9th Mrs Russell 16th Mrs Hewett 23rd Mrs Burgess With all the significant anniversaries coming into date the 30th Mrs Higgs 7th Dec Mrs Butt local memories and links are all there to remember, those who gave their all.

DOYNTON CHURCH SIDESMEN I am also given to remember this is a time of year when it gets cold, 3rd G Copping 17th D Vaudrey dark and often rather wet and that I should remember my 24th P Rees Dec 1st E Crew neighbours who feel the cold more and perhaps ensure they are ok. Not everyone has a nice log fire. DOYNTON CHURCH FLOWERS 3rd Diane Ashman 10th/17th Elsie Fishlock The time of year also reminds me as we have put our clocks back 24th Jenny Bartram Dec 1st Wendy Cashmore (who was late for church or work!) that autumn is now fully on us and the leaves are changing and dropping to the floor. To me this reminds me of how sometimes we need to literally take a leaf out of our visible world and remember that there perhaps comes a time to let go of what has been and rest until the new beauty becomes clear. Benefice Contacts May I end by hoping that as we enjoy this time of change in our VICAR Rev Tim Bell 9373581 weather and the trees around us, that we remember the people Wick Colin Bailey 07990507259 around us and perhaps change how often we think of or pray for Deputy Warden [email protected] others. 20 5 News from St Bartholomew’s As I write this, at the tail end of October, I am still looking at the lovely colours of the leaves in my garden - how can it be that there are Christmas trimmings in the shops, and the Parish Magazine emails are full of upcoming Christmas events? But there we are, by the time you get this, it will be November, and after Bonfire Night and Remembrance Sunday*, it will be Stir Up Sunday before you know it!

So, in that spirit of preparation, I want to invite you to participate in some way with our “Gift That Money Can’t Buy” theme in church this Christmas. If you are a member of one of our local organisations, you may already have been thinking about this, but if not, you can still be part of it: the idea is that you wrap a box as if it were a gift, but leave it empty and label it as if it were a gift that money can’t buy. So, you could label it to a loved one who is no longer with us, and mark the gift as “Just one more day together”, or label it to “The Whole World” and mark it as “Clean, fresh air” - the only limit is your imagination! It can be funny, thought-provoking, daft, complex or simple, it’s up to you. It can be any size (your children might like to do individual small ones, for instance) and any shape.

You can deliver your box on Saturday 7th December, any time after 10.00 am and the church will be open for people to come and view the display on the following Saturday, 14th. We will be serving simple lunch, and mince pies and mulled wine, so even if you can’t offer a box/ gift, you can still join in!

*Actually, a quick word about Remembrance Sunday: this is always a very moving service - the Last Post and Reveille are played by an ex- serviceman in our congregation, and we have a War Grave in the churchyard at which we lay a wreath. The Uniformed Organisations (Guides, Scouts etc) are also there. Please consider joining us, even if you don’t generally go to church.

Right, I’m off to plan where I am going to hide Easter eggs... 6 19 WHAT'S ON - November 2019 News from the URC
