UT MANAGERIAL FINANCE AND BUDGETING CERTIFICATE

Current University of Toledo employees are eligible to earn a UT Managerial Finance and Budgeting Certificate by participating in select programs offered by HRTD/OQCL. These opportunities are offered to UT employees through and OQCL to help them improve their professional skills and performance.

Finance & for the Non-Financial Manager – Dr. Phil Fink This course is intended for those non-financial managers who have little or no background in finance and accounting. Dr. Philip Fink will explain how various types of transactions impact financial statements. Participants will learn how to use financial terminology so that they can effectively communicate with their and financial managers. Attendees will also learn how to: interpret and understand financial reports in order to increase a firm’s profitability; understand how affects financial reports and flow; and recognize the difference between the and cash basis accounting.

UT Financial Processes – Brenda Grant Within the framework of university operations, numerous financial processes take place which must be implemented efficiently to maintain an overall fiscal sustainability. The instructor will take a holistic approach to exploring university financial processes to show how they interrelate between the central administration and departmental levels. The key focus of the seminar will be to give participants a clear understanding of the university , human resources and departmental processes and the ways in which each process affects the fiscal health of the University. The role of departmental accountability will also be examined.

Responsibility-Based Budgeting – David Cutri This interactive seminar will allow participants to explore the pros and cons of responsibility-based budgeting and financial responsibility in the academic setting of our University. The concept of RBB is based on the model of incentive funding awarded to colleges and schools for generating enrollment growth. This largely decentralized financial process rewards deans and directors with increased financial control over their areas after they continue to demonstrate fiscally responsible management of resources. Participants will discuss and analyze how effective is this form of incentive and accountability based system in an academic setting and consider the long-term impact on the fiscal health of our University.

Internal Controls & You: Risk Assessment and – David Cutri managers and employees participating in this session will gain an understanding of internal controls and discover how to identify needed controls on business objectives and risks. Through group discussions, practical exercises, individual coaching and feedback, participants will actively learn how to analyze and assess risk and how to design a cost-effective control system to minimize risks for business processes.

Managerial Budgeting – Dr. Diana Franz Participants in this seminar will acquire the fundamentals about the planning and budgeting process. This will include learning the key concepts and identifying the stages and benefits of budgeting. The instructor will lead a discussion on the impact of internal and external factors affecting the budget, the use of best practices in budgeting and ways of avoiding common pitfalls. Finally, participants will go through the formal steps of developing a master budget using an operating budget, a capital budget and supporting schedules. Session will end with a quick evaluation of using budgetary information as a feedback and feed-forward system and ways of measuring performance against the budget.
