A.P. INDY PASSES PROVED A LOT OF PEOPLE WRONG AWAY AT 31 There has been a lot of conversation in these pages over the past few days about the difficulty sires have attracting in their third and fourth season. Many of them are sold overseas as a result. Once in a while, one gets off to such a good start in America that they are brought back when it is discovered that people simply gave up on them too soon. Case in point: Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy--, by ). The son of A.P. Indy is back at WinStar Farm after spending three years in Korea. The syndicate that owned him made the decision to sell him before any of his offspring had made it to the races, accepting an offer from the Korean Racing Authority. Cont. p6

A.P. Indy | Benoit

Turned over to Neil Drysdale, A.P. Indy finished fourth as the favorite in his debut at Del Mar, then underwent surgery for an undescended testicle. He returned to rattle off three straight wins in 1991, capped by the GI Hollywood Futurity, and picked up where he left off in 1992 with wins in the GII San Rafael S. and GI . That winning streak would have ensured him favoritism for the GI , but a quarter crack kept him in his stall during the Run for the Roses. Drysdale regrouped and sent the to New York, where he captured the GII Peter Pan S. and GI Belmont S. A.P. Indy made his next appearance in Woodbine=s Molson Million in September, but ran fifth at 3-5. After a terrible start in the GI Club Gold Cup the following month, he put in a strong late bid to claim third behind eventual champion older horse () and 1991 GI Kentucky Derby hero Strike the Gold (). Three weeks later, he put matters to right in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic, rallying under regular rider Eddie Delahoussaye to seal Eclipse honors as Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old. His career mark stood at 11-8-0-1 with earnings of $2,979,815.

In Demand at Stud A.P. Indy headed to Lane=s End breeding shed as a mouth- watering stallion prospect, and delivered the goods. His first yearlings averaged $298,750 in 1995 (topped by the $700,000 Cromwell) and, from 45 named foals, he was represented by four black-type winners in 1996, headed by GSW Accelerator. emerged as the favorite for the 1997 Kentucky Derby following wins in the GII Fountain of Youth S. and GII Toyota Blue Grass S., but sustained a knee chip when fourth on the first Saturday in May. Although he had an abbreviated sophomore season due to injury, the dark bay tallied graded wins in the GII H., GI Metropolitan H. and GI Whitney as a 4-year-old. A.P. Indy & trainer Neil Drysdale | Horsephotos $199,488,182. Their average price was $533,391, and the median was $360,000. A.P. Indy=s highest-priced yearling came in 2010, when a colt out of Balance (Thunder ) sold for $4.2 million to Besilu Stables. Demand for members of A.P. Indy=s final crop--which contained 35 foals--was high, as expected. Twelve of his final yearlings went through the sales ring in 2012, and nine sold--all at Keeneland September, for a sale-leading average of $466,111. A 2-year-old filly from that crop sold the following year at Fasig-Tipton Florida for $1.1 million--the second-highest price paid at the sale and tops for a filly.

Daughters Also Contribute To His Legacy As brilliant a sire as A.P. Indy has been, his achievements as a broodmare sire are equally impressive, as his numbers nearly match those of his Triple Crown-winning sire. To date, A.P. Indy=s daughters have produced a total of 215 black-type winners (101 at the graded/group level)--he is the broodmare sire of winners of the GI Kentucky Derby (Super Saver {Maria=s Mon}) and GI Preakness S. Stables after Ben Leon went to $8.5 million at the 2011 Keeneland November sale, Royal Delta earned $4,811,125. By way of comparison, Seattle Slew is the broodmare sire of 225 black-type winners, 106 at the graded or group level, and 27 Grade I/Group 1 winners to date. The hallmark of a truly great sire or broodmare sire is the ability to produce year in and year out and A.P. Indy consistently measured up. He has been among the top 10 broodmare sires each year from 2010 through the current racing season and was the second-leading broodmare sire of 2013 and 2014, before going one better in in 2015, when his producing daughters accounted for nearly $17 million in earnings. He currently sits in third spot among the leading broodmare sires of 2020, owing to the exploits of GI Pegasus World Cup Turf winner Zulu Alpha (Street Cry {Ire}).

The greatest thing about first-year sires is that no one has had Carrie Brogden, Machmer Hall a bad one yet. Once these stallions have runners, even if trainers and owners only have one "bad" horse from the sire, they will balk at buying another one. The numbers truthfully say that most of the horses are "bad" even though only the very top sires produce even 8% stakes winners. Even with this year's incredible crop of first 3-year-olds with Constitution, Palace Malice, American Pharoah, Tapiture, Liam's Map, etc., I would not look for the first-year trend to change. And now what is astonishing is that they are sucking a lot of the top mares from proven stallions. It has been fascinating for me to watch, and this question inspired me to look at our own foaling mares in the Machmer Hall broodmare band. I looked at our numbers for the foaling mares: 34 expecting first years, 48 expecting proven stallions, and 10 expecting "bubble" stallion babies. TRANSATLANTIC PINHOOKS MORE CLASSIC PROSPECTS FOR EXPATRIATED SIRE By Kelsey Riley ON THE CLASSIC TRAIL The nature of the American bloodstock market=s trend toward unproven sires combined with an increased demand in developing nations for international stock has resulted in a worrying mass exodus of middle market stallions from Kentucky in recent years. WinStar Farm sold the regally bred Take Charge Indy to South Korea in 2016 six weeks before his first crop turned two, with his support particularly in the sales ring having waned, but thanks to a clause in the contract WinStar was able to buy him back and the son of A.P. Indy has returned to Kentucky for 2020 after leaving 12 stakes winners from his first three crops to race. WinStar also sold a pair of Group 1 sires to Turkey last year: and Super Saver. Bodemeister had provided the GI Kentucky Derby winner and Grade II winner American Anthem from his first crop, while Super Saver flew the gates with three Grade I winners in his initial crop: champion sprinter , promising young sire Competitive Edge and Mr. Monomoy | Coady the filly Embellish The Lace.
