PRE-SERVICE MUSIC WELCOME OPENING SONGS: GOD BLESS AMERICA God bless America, land that I love Stand beside her and guide her Through the night with the light from above From the mountains to the prairies To the oceans white with foam God bless America, my home sweet home God bless America, my home sweet home 1 MY COUNTRY ‘TIS OF THEE My country, ‘tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing: Land where my fathers died, Land of the Pilgrim’s pride, From ev’ry mountain-side Let freedom ring. My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills Like that above. Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom’s song: Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breath partake; Let rocks their silence break The sound prolong. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE I Pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America And to the republic, for which it stands, one nation under God Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all 2 THE NATIONAL ANTHEM Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof thru the night that our flag was still there Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? PLEDGE TO THE CROSS OF CHRIST I pledge allegiance to the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the faith for which it stands, one Savior, King eternal with grace and mercy for all. HYMN #289: THE CHURCHES ONE FOUNDATION The Church’s one foundation Elect from every nation, Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; Yet one o’er all the earth; She is his new creation Her charter of salvation: By water and the Word. One Lord, one faith, one birth. From heav'n He came and sought One holy name she blesses, her Partakes one holy food, To be his holy bride; And to one hope she presses With his own blood he bought her, With ev'ry grace endued. And for her life he died. OPENING LITURGY P: We begin our time together this day in the name of the God of heaven and earth, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. C: Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise, His goodness comes to us every morning. 3 P: Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. (Lev. 25: 10) C: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind. (Psalm 33: 12) P: He rules forever by His power, His eyes watch the nations – let not the rebellious rise up against Him. (Psalm 66: 7) C: May the nations be glad and sing for joy for the Lord rules the peoples justly and guides the nations of the earth. (Psalm 67: 4) P: Praise the Lord all you nations; extol Him all you peoples. For great is His love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord. (Psalm 117) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: O most gracious God, in Jesus Christ my merciful and loving Father, I acknowledge and confess my guilt in the weak and imperfect performance of the duties of this day. I have called on thee for pardon and forgiveness of sins, but so coldly and carelessly. P: I have heard thy Holy Word but with such deadness of spirit, that I have been an unprofitable and forgetful hearer, so that O Lord, tho’ I have done thy work, it has been so negligently. C: But O God, who art rich in mercy and plenteous in redemption, mark not what I have done amiss, remember that I am dust and remit my transgressions, negligence and ignorance and cover them with all the absolute obedience of thy dear Son. P: Make me to know what is acceptable in thy Holy Word, make me to know what is acceptable in thy sight, open the eyes of my understanding and help me to thoroughly examine myself, increase my faith, and direct me to the true object, Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. 4 Prayer for the Day less O Lord, the people of this land, from the highest to the lowest, B particularly those you have appointed to rule over us in church and state and continue thy goodness to me. These weak petitions I humbly implore thee to hear, accept and answer for the sake of thy dear Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (The Confession and Absolution and Prayer for the Day come from George Washington’s Prayer Journal for a Sunday evening). THE PEACE WAVE GOSPEL LESSON 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. -John 8: 31 – 36 SERMON: FOR FREEDOM CHRIST HAS SET US FREE! 5 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” -Galatians 5: 1, 13 – 14 5 OFFERING OF OUR TITHES AND GIFTS TO THE LORD JESUS! HYMN FOR THE DAY #501: GOD OF OUR FATHERS 1 God of our fathers, whose almighty hand Leads forth in beauty all the starry band Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies: Our grateful songs before your throne arise. 2 Your love divine has led us in the past; In this free land by you our lot is cast; Oh, be our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay; Your Word our law, your paths our chosen way. 3 From war's alarms, from deadly pestilence Make your strong arm our ever sure defense. Your true religion in our hearts increase; Your bounteous goodness nourish us in peace. 4 Refresh your people on their toilsome way; Lead us from night to never-ending day; Fill all our lives with heav'n-born love and grace Until at last we meet before your face. PRAYERS FOR THE DAY THE LORD’S PRAYER BENEDICTION CLOSING SONG: BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He has loosed the fateful lightning of this terrible swift sword: 6 His truth is marching on. Refrain: Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat. Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer him; be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.
