Disadvantages of Fixed Speed Compressors

A fixed speed cannot modulate its capacity. Instead it can only switch on or off so that the remains within allowable upper and lower limits. The result is: Upper Hysteresis • Fluctuations in room temperature. Limit of 25°C Setpoint • Suboptimal energy efficiency. of 24°C Lower Hysteresis • Increased compressor wear due to constant Limit of 23°C starting and stopping. Compressor Compressor Compressor Compressor Room Temperature Room • Spikes in current draw during compressor On Off On Off start-up. Time • Fatigue of pipework in the absence of compressor soft-starting. Fixed capacity temperature control in cooling mode.

Digital Scroll Compressors - Only a Partial Solution

A digital uses a digitally controlled mechanical unloader to engage and disengage the scrolls while the motor runs continuously at a fixed speed and thus avoids the on / off cycles of the fixed speed compressor. This fully engaged or non-engaged capacity cycle delivers temperature control without the disadvantages of starting and stopping a fixed speed compressor.

However, efficiency is low as there is still substantial power consumed during the disengaged intervals, and it falls with refrigeration load reduction. As air conditioners typically spend most of their life operating under design capacity, the digital scroll compressor will therefore consume more energy than other available options.

Advantages of Inverter Compressors

BLDC inverter compressors have a high efficiency permanent magnet motor that can be electronically speed controlled to modulate the mass flow rate through the refrigeration circuit. The benefits are: Temp. • Greater temperature control precision with capacity turn-down ratios of typically 5:1.

• Significantly improved COP during capacity turn-down because of the reduced condensing to evaporating pressure differential. This results in large overall energy Setpoint savings as air conditioners typically spend minimal time of 24°C at design capacity.

• Reduced compressor wear due to the largely diminished

need for compressor on/off cycling. Temperature Room

• Reduced stress on refrigeration pipework due to Time compressor soft-starting. Inverter temperature • No spikes in current draw during compressor start-up due control in cooling mode. to soft-starting.

• Reduced compressor noise during capacity turn-down.

• The ability to be used in (VAV) installations.

• The ability to operate at higher ambient temperatures with greater control over condensing pressure.

Cooke Industries - Phone: +64 9 579 2185 Email: [email protected] Web: www.cookeindustries.co.nz Dunnair Inverter Range Features

Refrigeration Dunnair Inverter units use BLDC inverter compressors and electronic expansion valves to achieve a wide range of capacity control (turn-down to approx. 20% capacity per compressor) and optimal energy efficiency.

Fans Dunnair Inverter units use high efficiency EC fans for supply air. These can be balanced for (CAV) applications, or alternatively speed can be modulated for Variable Air Volume (VAV) applications. EC axial fans are used for the condenser air and their speed is modulated by the integrated head pressure control to ensure stability of the DX system.

Control Dunnair Inverter units come standard with LLI and BACnet HLI for unit operation and monitoring. Touchscreen displays are also available as an option for convenient standalone operation. The inverter compressors are safeguarded by thorough protection logic integrated into the onboard control system.

Economy Cycle Dunnair Inverter units are available with economy cycle dampers as an option. When conditions are suitable, these allow for free-cooling which saves significant amounts of energy.

Broughton Anglican College -Air cooled inverter packaged unit

Dunnair supplied a 140kW air cooled inverter packaged unit to condition a school assembly hall. Economy cycle dampers were included which allow for energy saving free-cooling when conditions are suitable, and modulate

to deliver outside air as CO2 levels rise. A touchscreen controller was also supplied for convenient unit operation.

Royal Military College Duntroon -Air cooled inverter split ducted units

Dunnair supplied two air cooled inverter split ducted units for Australia’s army officer training academy. Each unit had a nominal capacity of 100kW and the split DX configuration allowed for easy installation into the existing facility.

Westlawn Commercial Building -Vertical water cooled inverter units used in a VAV system

Dunnair supplied ten water cooled inverter units as replacements for old units with staged compressors and direct drive fans. With long term government tenants occupying the building, the client opted for a high efficiency HVAC solution by upgrading to units with inverter compressors and EC plug fans. The factory control systems were expanded to manage supply air discharge pressure and suit the Variable Air Volume (VAV) installation.

Refer to the Dunnair water cooled Inverter brochure for more information on this range.

DELWP Offices Melbourne -Vertical water cooled inverter units used in a VAV system

Dunnair supplied nine water cooled inverter units for use in a Variable Air Volume (VAV) system. The smooth capacity modulation of the inverter compressors made these units the ideal solution as they allow the BMS to maintain a constant supply air temperature while the supply air volume is varied in order to match cooling demands. The VAV design approach allowed for multiple-zone (achieved with VAV terminal units) and lower overall fan noise.
