On Holy Thursday the celebrant, having removed the from the high , goes to the . He there lays aside the vestments and accompanied by the deacons, returns to the high altar. Whilst the antiphon "Diviserunt sibi" and the psalm "Deus, Deus meus" are being recited, the celebrant and his assistants ascend to the predella and strip the altar of the altar-cloths, vases of flowers, antipendium, and other ornaments, so that nothing remains but the cross and the candlesticks with the candles extinguished. In the same manner all the other altars in the church are denuded. The Christian altar represents Christ, and the stripping of the altar reminds us how He was stripped of his garments when He fell into the hands of the Jews and was exposed naked to their insults. It is for this reason that the psalm "Deus, Deus meus" is recited, wherein the Messiah speaks of the Roman soldiers dividing His garments among them. This ceremony signifies the suspension of the Holy Sacrifice. It was formerly the custom in some churches on this day to wash the altars with a bunch of hyssop dipped in wine and water, to render them in some manner worthy of the Lamb without stain who is immolated on them, and to recall to the minds of the faithful with how great purity they should assist at the Holy Sacrifice and receive Holy Communion. St. Isidore of Seville (De Eccles. Off, I, xxviii) and St. Eligiusof Noyon (Homil. VIII, De Coena Domini) say that this ceremony was intended as an homage offered to Our Lord, in return for the humility wherewith He deigned to wash the feet of His disciples.

I was dreaming that I was treading the streets of the Holy City, pottering about like a tourist. In my wandering I came upon the museum of that city of our dream. I went in, and a courteous attendant conducted me round. There was some old armour there, much bruised with battle. Many things were conspicuous by their absence. I saw nothing of Alexander’s, nor of Napoleon’s. There was no Pope’s ring, nor even the ink-bottle that Luther is said to have thrown at the devil, nor Wesley’s seal and keys. I saw a widow’s mite and the feather of a little bird. I saw some swaddling clothes, a hammer and three nails, and a few thorns. I saw a bit of fishing-net and the broken oar of a boat. I saw a sponge that had once been dipped in vinegar, and a small piece of silver. But I cannot enumerate all I saw, nor describe all I felt. Whilst I was turning over a common drinking cup which had a very honourable place, I whispered to the attendant, “Have you not got a towel and basin among your collection?” “No,” he said, “not here; you see they are in constant use.” Then I knew that I was in Heaven, in the Holy City, and amid the redeemed society. Knowing that He came from God and went to God … Jesus took a towel and basin. Written by A.E. Whitham

I Come with Joy (The Hymnal 1982 #304)

Verse 1 I come with joy to meet my Lord Forgiven loved and free In awe and wonder to recall His life laid down for me

Verse2 I come with Christians far and near To find as all are fed The new community of love In Christ’s communion bread

Verse 3 As Christ breaks bread and bids us share Each proud division ends That love that made us makes us one And stangers now are friends

Verse 4 And thus with joy we meet our Lord His presence always near Is in such friendship better known We see and praise him here

The People remain standing, the Celebrant says

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

The Celebrant says

2

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.

People Amen.

The following is said by the Celebrant

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One,

People Have mercy upon us.

The People remain standing as the Celebrant prays the Collect.

Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

People Amen.

The People sit for the reading of the lessons.

A Reading from the Book of Exodus 12:1-14

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute

3

judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.

The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God

The Psalm will be prayed responsively by whole verse. The Celebrant will begin and the People pray together the alternating verses.

Psalm 116:1, 10-17

1 I love the LORD, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, * because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him. 10 How shall I repay the LORD * for all the good things he has done for me? 11 I will lift up the cup of salvation * and call upon the Name of the LORD. 12 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD * in the presence of all his people. 13 Precious in the sight of the LORD * is the death of his servants. 14 O LORD, I am your servant; * I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. 15 I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving * and call upon the Name of the LORD. 16 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD * in the presence of all his people, 17 In the courts of the LORD’s house, * in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

A Reading from the 1st Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 11:23-26

I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Deacon or Priest reads the Gospel, first saying

The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

The Deacon or Priest says

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 13:1-17, 31b-35

People Glory to you Lord Christ.

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you

5

will understand.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.” After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord--and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you Lord Christ.

The Preacher offers a prayer and then the People are seated for the sermon.

The People stand for the Prayers of the People. The Leader and People pray responsively. The Deacon or other person says

Father, we pray for your holy ;

People That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;

People That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

People That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;

People That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

6

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

People That our works may find favor in your sight.

We pray today especially for (the written intercessions of the people are added) and all those on St. Ann's Prayer list. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

People That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest.

People Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;

People May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Silence

The People may add their own petitions.

The Celebrant prays for the diocese in this time of transition

Heavenly Father, we praise and thank you for this, your diocese of Albany. Inspire and sustain us in this time of transition. Incline our hearts to do your will, and so direct us in your ways that the leader you are raising up to be our Bishop will find here joyful disciples, making disciples, united in faith, unflagging in hope, and steeped in mutual charity. In your mercy, accept our repentance, and grant us peace; look with patience on our enthusiasms; and pour rich gifts and grace upon all who are entrusted with the ongoing work of your church; so that, with diligence and charity, we may discern correctly and walk righteously in your ways. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

People Amen.

The Celebrant then prays the Collect saying

O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are

7

gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

People Amen.

The Deacon or Celebrant says

Kneeling, let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

The People kneel. Silence may be kept.

Minister and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Priest stands and says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

People Amen.

All stand. The Celebrant says to the People.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And also with you.

The Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The People are then seated for the announcements.

Following the announcements, the Celebrant says the Offertory Sentence

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.

Representatives of the congregation bring the People’s offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts, to the Deacon or Celebrant.

As the gifts are brought forward all remain standing and sing.

The Doxology (The Hymnal 1982 #380 vs. 3)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow Praise Him all creatures here below Praise Him above ye heavenly host Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost Amen

The celebrant says

All things come of thee oh Lord.

People And of thine own have we given thee.

The Celebrant faces the people and says Prayer D Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Altar, the Celebrant proceeds

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever.

Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.

10

Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your name, as we sing,

The Celebrant and People sing together.

Holy holy holy Lord God of hosts Heaven and earth are full of Your glory Hosanna in the highest Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest Hosanna in the highest

© 2020 Lisa M. Longe | Mass of One Kingdom One King

The People kneel. The Celebrant continues

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again, and again, you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.

Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose, he gave himself up to death; and rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new.

And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

11

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ's death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

Celebrant and People

We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God.

The Celebrant continues

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.

Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.

Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.

And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, with St. Ann and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.

People Amen.

12

The Celebrant continues

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Celebrant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

An Anthem is said by the Celebrant.

The Celebrant and People then sing

Lamb of God You take away the sins of the world Have mercy have mercy on us. Lamb of God You take away the sins of the world Have mercy have mercy on us. Lamb of God You take away the sins of the world Grant us oh grant us Your peace.

© 2020 Lisa M. Longe | Mass of One Kingdom One King.

The following prayer is said by the Celebrant and People together

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people.

13

The Bread is given to the communicants with these words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen.

Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.

All Baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion. Please extend your hands to receive the bread.

If you are not baptized and would like to receive a blessing, please come forward and cross your arms across your chest. If you have not yet entered into a new life in Christ and received the forgiveness of sins through the waters of Baptism, please see Fr. Neal or one of the deacons after the service.

After receiving Communion, the People return to their seats and either kneel or sit. A period of silence is kept.

The People remain seated as the Celebrant leads those on the live stream in the following prayer as an act of reception of Spiritual Communion. The Celebrant continues

In Union, dear Lord, with the faithful at every altar of your Church where your Blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I pray you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you and embrace you with all the affection of my soul. Let me never be separated from you. Let me live and die in your love.

Come Lord Jesus, dwell in your servant in the fullness of your strength, in the perfection of your ways, and in the holiness of your spirit, and rule over every hostile power in the might of your Spirit, and to the glory of your Father.

May the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my body and soul unto everlasting life. Amen.

After Communion, the People stand, and the celebrant says

Let us pray

Celebrant and People

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant

14

us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singles of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant and Deacons remove their vestments. The People kneel.

During the stripping of the altar all recite together

Psalm 22

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? * and are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress? 2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer; * by night as well, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are the Holy One, * enthroned upon the praises of Israel. 4 Our forefathers put their trust in you; * they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 They cried out to you and were delivered; * they trusted in you and were not put to shame. 6 But as for me, I am a worm and no man, * scorned by all and despised by the people. 7 All who see me laugh me to scorn; * they curl their lips and wag their heads, saying, 8 "He trusted in the LORD; let him deliver him; * let him rescue him, if he delights in him." 9 Yet you are he who took me out of the womb, * and kept me safe upon my mother's breast. 10 I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; * you were my God when I was still in my mother's womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, * and there is none to help. 12 Many young bulls encircle me; * strong bulls of Bashan surround me. 13 They open wide their jaws at me, * like a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water; all my bones are out of joint; * my heart within my breast is melting wax. 15 My mouth is dried out like a pot-sherd; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; * and you have laid me in the dust of the grave. 16 Packs of dogs close me in, and gangs of evildoers circle around me; * they pierce my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones. 17 They stare and gloat over me; * they divide my garments among them; they cast lots for my clothing. 18 Be not far away, O LORD; * you are my strength; hasten to help me. 19 Save me from the sword, * my life from the power of the dog. 20 Save me from the lion's mouth, * my wretched body from the horns of wild bulls. 21 I will declare your Name to my brethren; * in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.

15

22 Praise the LORD, you that fear him; * stand in awe of him, O offspring of Israel; all you of Jacob's line, give glory. 23 For he does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty; neither does he hide his face from them; * but when they cry to him he hears them. 24 My praise is of him in the great assembly; * I will perform my vows in the presence of those who worship him. 25 The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and those who seek the LORD shall praise him: * "May your heart live for ever!" 26 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, * and all the families of the nations bow before him. 27 For kingship belongs to the LORD; * he rules over the nations. 28 To him alone all who sleep in the earth bow down in worship; * all who go down to the dust fall before him. 29 My soul shall live for him; my descendants shall serve him; * they shall be known as the LORD'S for ever. 30 They shall come and make known to a people yet unborn * the saving deeds that he has done.

Prayer Table Recess -- It is with much personal sadness that Deacons Alan and MaryCarol have decided, after consulting with Father Neal, that it would be best to suspend our operation of the Monday morning Prayer Table for an undetermined amount of time. We suspended the Table, which has been a part of St. Ann's church ministry since July 9 of 2012, last March when our churches were all shuttered because of the pandemic outbreak. But the sad fact is that since we rebooted the Monday morning Prayer Table in mid-June and resumed our offers of prayer, free food and free clothing, our attendance at the Table has been minimal. Our neighbors just are not coming out as they have in past years. Some of this may be due to weather, some to the fact that the free meal on Monday at the Masonic Lodge across the street has not been available, and some to the fact that many people are still reluctant to come out of their homes unless they have to. In any case, we will not be hosting the Prayer Table for a while. Therefore, we ask that you do NOT bring any donations of food or clothing for now until such time as we decide to restart the Table operation. Thank you for all your support in the past. Please pray for clarity as to what and when the Lord might be calling us to next.
