Stat 100A: Introduction to Probability. Outline for the Day: 1. Hand in HW1
Stat 100a: Introduction to Probability. Outline for the day: 1. Hand in HW1. See hw2. 2. All in with 55. 3. Expected value and pot odds. 4. Pot odds example, Elezra and Violette. 5. P(flop 4 of a kind). 6. Variance and SD. 7. Markov and Chebyshev inequalities. 8. Luck and skill in poker. 9. Lederer and Minieri. I will assign you to teams on Tuesday. ♠ ♣ ♥ ♦ 1. Hand in HW1. 2. All in with 55? a) You have $100 and 55 and are up against A9. You are 56% to win, so your expected value is $112. b) You have $100 and 55 and are up against A9, KJ, and QJs. Seems pretty terrible, doesn't it? But you have a probability of 27.3% to quadruple, so your expected value is 0.273 x $400 = $109. About the same as #1! [ For these probabilities, see the online Texas Holdem odds calculator at http://www.cardplayer.com .] 2. Expected value and pot odds. Suppose someone bets (or raises) you, going all-in. What should your chances of winning be in order for you to correctly call? Let B = the amount bet to you, i.e. the additional amount you'd need to put in if you want to call. So, if you bet 100 & your opponent with 800 left went all-in, B = 700. Let POT = the amount in the pot right now (including your opponent's bet). Let p = your probability of winning the hand if you call. So prob. of losing = 1-p. Let CHIPS = the number of chips you have right now. -

WSOP 2008: Zusammenfassung Events #27 Bis #30

• Undergrad Probability Course (Not a Poker Strategy Guide Nor an Endorsement of Gambling)
• Undergrad probability course (not a poker strategy guide nor an endorsement of gambling). Standard undergrad topics + random walks, arcsine laws, and a few other specialized topics. • Instead of balls and urns, the examples involve Texas Hold’em. • Real examples. • Luck vs. skill. • Computaon using the holdem R package. Example 8.3. On one interesIng hand from Season 2 of High Stakes Poker, Corey Zeidman (9♥ 9♣) called $800, Doyle Brunson (Q♠ 10♠) raised to $6200, and Eli Elezra (10♥ 10♦), Daniel Negreanu (K♠ J♠), and Zeidman all called. Use R to calculate the probability that aer the 3 flop cards are dealt, Elezra would be ahead, in terms of the best current 5-card poker hand, of his 3 opponents. Answer. With 8 cards belonging to the 4 players removed from the deck, there are C(44,3) = 13,244 possible flop combinaons, each equally likely to occur. One can use R to imitate dealing each of these flops, and seeing if Elezra is leading on the flop for each. A[er loading the funcIons in holdem, one may use the code below to solve this problem. n = choose(44,3); result = rep(0,n); a1 = c(8,22,34,35,48,49,50,51) This code loops through all 13,244 possible a2 = c(1:52)[-a1]; i= 0 for(i1 in 1:42){for(i2 in ((i1+1):43)){for(i3 in ((i2+1):44)){ flops and finds that Elezra is ahead on 5,785 flop1 = c(a2[i1],a2[i2],a2[i3]); flop2 = switch2(flop1) out of 13,244 flops. -
