HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY A Directory of South Carolina Writers, Small Presses, and Literary Magazines is organized in alphabetical order, with all writers listed first, followed by small presses and literary magazines. Each writer's entry includes the following information: name, address, phone number(s), type of writing each person writes, and a listing of not more than a total of ten books published by the author and/or publications in which the author's work has appeared. The type of writing each author writes is listed according to symbol, flush­ right beside the author's name. There are six symbols. F - fiction CNF - creative non-fiction PW - playwriting P - poetry CL- children's literature PP - performance poetry The Directory is intended to be used as a communications tool to help writers find each other and to help programming organizations find writers. An updated edition of A Directory of South Carolina Writers, Small Presses, and Literary Magazines is scheduled for publication in 1988. If you were not included in this edition and wish to be included in the next one, or if you wish to have your name added to our Literary Arts mailing list, write The South Carolina Arts Commission, 1800 Gervais Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201. The data for this directory was collected by questionnaire, sent by Key Publications and published by The South Carolina Arts Commission. Reproduction of this material without the permission of the publisher, or use of this material for any purpose other than that for which it is intended is strictly prohibited. The directory was intended to be a listing of creative writers in South Carolina, which is why the six categories were included on the questionnaire. If no categories were checked, Key Publications attempted to contact the writer by letter and telephone.     Historic Southern Indiana Interpretation Workshop, March 2-4, 1998 Views from the Past: Teaching History with Art Presented By James E. May Synopsis: When art began it was life. The distinctions we see between our necessary functions and our ephemeral passions did not exist. You made art to help you in your life. In the caves at Lascaux, perhaps the first historic homes of which we have record, Paleolithic Man decorated his walls. He drew on them with chunks of yellow and red ochre. He then blew those pigments on the wall or mixed them with animal fat to color reindeer, horses, bison, boars and wolves. He also painted traps and spears and symbols for himself engaged in the hunt. Besides the paintings are thousands of engravings in the stone walls. These "primitive" engaged in a ritual that involved drawing and painting in a sort of figurative hunt that survives today as either a record of thanks or a prayer for success. The Venus of Willendorf, perhaps the oldest known work of art, also is ritualistic at its core. It is a symbol to insure fertility. Somehow, over millennia, we go to THIS POINT where we have so disconnected art from life that some people even say they have no use for it. Or have we? I hope to discuss over the next hour how we can use art to teach about or learn fro life and the rewards and perils of doing so. Since we are mostly, if not all professionals dealing with the 19th or 20th centuries, I will mostly confine myself to that period but no entirely and not entirely, but mostly, to America.

Given his leading role at court in what Patrick Collinson calls the “nasty nineties,” Essex has taken much of the blame for the divisive factional politics of Elizabeth’s final decade. However, leading recent efforts to salvage Essex’s reputation, historian Paul Hammer has uncovered a sophisticated bureaucracy operated by highly educated scholars and led by an intelligent, cultivated statesman. A considerable number of high-profile literary figures, moreover, willingly engaged with this ambitiously expanding Essex faction.
