  • A Dark New World : Anatomy of Australian Horror Films
A dark new world: Anatomy of Australian horror films Mark David Ryan Faculty of Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), December 2008 The Films (from top left to right): Undead (2003); Cut (2000); Wolf Creek (2005); Rogue (2007); Storm Warning (2006); Black Water (2007); Demons Among Us (2006); Gabriel (2007); Feed (2005). ii KEY WORDS Australian horror films; horror films; horror genre; movie genres; globalisation of film production; internationalisation; Australian film industry; independent film; fan culture iii ABSTRACT After experimental beginnings in the 1970s, a commercial push in the 1980s, and an underground existence in the 1990s, from 2000 to 2007 contemporary Australian horror production has experienced a period of strong growth and relative commercial success unequalled throughout the past three decades of Australian film history. This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002). Overlap between these spheres of production, results in ‘high-end indie’ films such as Undead (2003) and Gabriel (2007) emerging from the underground but crossing over into the mainstream.

  • What the Film Fest 2018 Review: the LAPLACE’S DEMON the TWILIGHT ZONE Meets SAW in This Odd, Nerdy Passion Project
THE LAPLACE’S DEMON REVIEWS FANTASIA 2017, DAY 7: “THE LAPLACE’S DEMON” by Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com, July 21, 2017 […] Similarly mindblowing but in a totally different way is Giordano Giulivi’s delightful “The Laplace’s Demon,” a low-budget affair that recalls “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” mixed with Agatha Christie and Guy Maddin. A group of Italian scientists have been summoned to an island in the middle of the ocean by a mad scientist who has discovered their research. The group has been trying to do the impossible—predict the future. They believe they have devised a program that can tell you exactly how many pieces a glass will break into if it hits the floor. Immediately, Giulivi is playing with fate vs. free will and how much we can truly know about the future. And he’s doing so in a style that recalls classic Italian filmmakers like Mario Bava, updated in a world of green-screen backgrounds and CGI effects. When the scientists arrive at this mansion on an island, they discover a scale model of the house in which they’re standing. The model would be interesting enough, but what’s more fascinating are the eight pawns standing in the living room, which soon move in unison with the people in the house. Is someone watching them and moving the pawns to coincide? Not exactly. It turns out that someone has taken their glass experiment a level further, able to predict every human action correctly. And then the house unleashes the Queen.

The supremacy of image has been promoted and refined by cinema which has sustained its place as America’s foremost cultural and artistic medium. Vision as a perceptual mode is also a compelling and dynamic aspect central to Nabokov’s creative imagination. Film was a fascination from childhood, but Nabokov’s interest in the medium extended beyond his experiences as an extra and his attempts to write for screen in Berlin in the 1920s and ’30s, or the declared cinematic novel of 1938, Laughter in the Dark and his screenplay for Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film version of Lolita.

  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

  • The Genius of Hitchcock Part One: August 2012
12/44 The Genius of Hitchcock Part One: August 2012 Special events include: x Tippi Hedren in Conversation x TV Preview + Q&A: THE GIRL – new BBC2 drama telling the full story of Hitchcock’s relationship with Tippi Hedren x Camille Paglia: Women & Magic in Hitchcock x The Lodger + composer Nitin Sawhney in Conversation Over the course of almost three months, Hitchcock’s surviving body of work as director will be presented in its entirety at BFI Southbank. The films will be grouped together, taking inspiration from one his most famous films to present the 39 Steps to the Genius of Hitchcock to help audiences increase their understanding of this complex and fascinating director. The first part of the BFI Southbank season in August, with special thanks to Sky Movies/HD, focuses on the first 12 steps, beginning with The Shaping of Alfred Hitchcock. The recent discovery in New Zealand of several reels of The White Shadow, scripted by Hitchcock, made international headlines. But other material, too, survives from his apprentice years, prior to The Pleasure Garden. In The Shaping of Hitchcock: Reflections on The White Shadow author Charles Barr will present a richly illustrated narrative of Hitchcock’s formative years, as an introduction to a screening of the thus-far incomplete The White Shadow (1924). BFI Future Film presents The DIY Thriller Film Fortnight to accompany the second step: The Master of Suspense. This course will give participants aged 15-25 the chance to make short thriller films inspired by Hitchcock. The Evolution of Style will look at the development of Hitchcock’s style – described by the director as ‘the first true Hitchcock film’, The Lodger (1926) introduces themes that would run through much of Hitchcock’s later work.

  • Tricks of the Light
Tricks of the Light: A Study of the Cinematographic Style of the Émigré Cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan Submitted by Tomas Rhys Williams to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film In October 2011 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to explore the overlooked technical role of cinematography, by discussing its artistic effects. I intend to examine the career of a single cinematographer, in order to demonstrate whether a dinstinctive cinematographic style may be defined. The task of this thesis is therefore to define that cinematographer’s style and trace its development across the course of a career. The subject that I shall employ in order to achieve this is the émigré cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan, who is perhaps most famous for his invention ‘The Schüfftan Process’ in the 1920s, but who subsequently had a 40 year career acting as a cinematographer. During this time Schüfftan worked throughout Europe and America, shooting films that included Menschen am Sonntag (Robert Siodmak et al, 1929), Le Quai des brumes (Marcel Carné, 1938), Hitler’s Madman (Douglas Sirk, 1942), Les Yeux sans visage (Georges Franju, 1959) and The Hustler (Robert Rossen, 1961).

During the term we will consider: 1) the definition and semantics/traits of what we call the thriller film and how it may relate to fantasy, horror, mystery, or other genres or sub-genres; 2) how thrillers reflect the culture and history of the time when and location where they were made; 3) the place of particular films in the history of this genre (considering possibly special effects, filmmakers, aspects of costumes, screenwriting, scenic design, influence of anime, etc.); 4) how these films have influenced and been influenced by texts and other filmmakers; and 5) different theoretical/critical approaches to the films under consideration (technology, gender, psychoanalysis, etc.); and adaptations of a source film and its remake in another country. There are many films we might see and discuss that are historically or culturally important, including many by Alfred Hitchcock and his imitators, and other titles that are variously labeled as psychological, political, science fiction or other iterations of thriller films, many made outside of the United States. Which ones we will see and which ones you will report on will be determined in the early weeks of the class.

  • Editing Within the Thriller Genre
Thriller is a favourite genre to many and has been around for longer than most think. Originally starting as a genre of literature, it has evolved into one of the most sought after genres within film. Early notable works such as Alfred Hitchcock's films in the mid 1900s have paved the way for the genre and solidified it’s editing and cinematography into what we have today. Despite its humbling beginnings in the mid 1900s the techniques, although somewhat repetitive, still manage to stay relevant today and have only gotten more advanced with time.
