The Rise of Our Icy Girl Saweetie

“‘Cause I'm Icy, Wifey, Haters wanna fight me”. Can you relate? We know someone who does. I know you’ve all heard the song, but have you heard all about her? Diamonté Harper, better known under the alias Saweetie- a nickname developed in her childhood, was born on June 3rd, 1993 in Santa Clara, California. She is of Filipino, Chinese, and African American descent. Like our fellow Cancer signs, her intuition and creativity played a huge role to get her where she is now. Saweetie began writing poetry from the age of 14, performing at open mics and eventually writing her own songs. Even in her early teens, she knew rapping was what she wanted to do. Growing up in The Bay area, the young rapper had a culture of music surrounding her, which she keeps with her to this day. Her musical influences include artists like Trina, Lil Kim, and in a huge way, , whom she related to on huge Barbie level. Before releasing her debut single, Icy Girl, Saweetie became known through videos of her rapping over old-school hip hop beats in her car. And if you thought the beat to Icy Girl was familiar, then you probably already know the now famous rap was recorded over the tune of My Neck, My Back By . She used to sell a line of hats from The Money Club before being introduced to Max Gousse, co-founder and CEO of Artistry Worldwide, producer of three Beyonce albums and now manager of artist, Saweetie. She chose to sign with Warner Bros, who love her empowering lyrics and uniqueness, and records in a partnership with her own label, Icy. In an interview with Vibe, Saweetie states that her goal has always been to be as real as possible with her music. “I hope that all the new female rappers succeed, it’s about all of us coming together,” she tells them. The Icy Girl music video now has 23+ million views, just being released only 5 months ago. Being an amazing academic student, receiving a full ride college scholarship, Saweetie wants her music to inspire others, whether through a tough time or to get up and be a success, as well as for them to know that it’s okay to go to college and still pursue their dreams. Her EP, High Maintenance, was released on March 16th of this year, and the album is her way of introducing and branding herself to the music industry. Saweetie is now on the 2018 artist to watch list, and we have no doubt that her influence and growth is not stopping any time soon. She is an inspiration to all the people that don’t yet have a plan or knowledge of what they want to do, but know exactly who they are and what they are capable of.
