Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP Chancellor of the Exchequer HM Treasury 1 Horse Guards Road London SW1A 2HQ Dear Chancellor, Budget Measures to Support Hospitality and Tourism We are writing today as members and supporters of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Hospitality and Tourism ahead of the Budget on 3rd March. As you will of course be aware, hospitality and tourism are vital to the UK’s economy along with the livelihoods and wellbeing of millions of people across the UK. The pandemic has amplified this, with its impacts illustrating the pan-UK nature of these sectors, the economic benefits they generate, and the wider social and wellbeing benefits that they provide. The role that these sectors play in terms of boosting local, civic pride in all our constituencies, and the strong sense of community that they foster, should not be underestimated. It is well-established that people relate to their local town centres, high streets and community hubs, of which the hospitality and tourism sectors are an essential part. The latest figures from 2020 highlight the significant impact that the virus has had on these industries. In 2020, the hospitality sector has seen a sales drop of 53.8%, equating to a loss in revenue of £72 billion. This decline has impacted the UK’s national economy by taking off around 2 percentage points from total GDP. For hospitality, this downturn is already estimated to be over 10 times worse than the impact of the financial crisis. It is estimated that employment in the sector has dropped by over 1 million jobs. -

On 13 November 2018, a binding motion for a return was agreed without division in the House of Commons, calling for “any legal advice in full, including that provided by the Attorney General, on the proposed withdrawal agreement on the terms of the UK’s departure from the European Union including the Northern Ireland backstop and framework for a future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union” to be laid before Parliament. -

The Brief is part of a wider communications programme covering the work of the IIEA’s UK Project Group – including commentaries, speeches, texts and event reports – which are highlighted on the Institute’s website. This Report summarises the work of the Body during 2008. Membership of the Body 2.There were a number of significant changes in membership during the year. In the early spring, the British Co-Chair, the Rt Hon Paul Murphy, returned to the Cabinet and was replaced by the Rt Hon Peter Hain. Sean O‟Fearghail was replaced as an Irish Vice-Chair and Chair of Committee C by Ms Margaret Conlon. Most importantly for the future of the Body, the October session was attended for the first time by delegates from the Democratic unionist Party and the Ulster Unionist party. Political Developments General Overview 3. 2008 was a year of consolidation for the peace process in Northern Ireland following the restoration of devolved government in May 2007. A Programme for Government and Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland, along with the Budget, were passed by the Assembly on 28 and 29 January 2008. -

Opening Remarks Gary Streeter invited Mark Harris to open the meeting in prayer. Gary Streeter congratulated Maeve Sherlock and Mark Harris on their recent ordination, and noted a particular highlight of this year was seeing so many MPs in attendance at the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast. 2. Review of recent events • Parliamentarians Afternoon Teas (21st February and 11th July): Over 50 Parliamentarians joined us for Afternoon Tea on each occasion, with many good cross-party conversations and new contacts made. • The Christian Tradition and the Practice of Politics discussion course has been running since October 2017, with a group for Members and a group for staff, led by Dr Anna Rowlands. -

COUNTMAKE EDUCATION CONSTITUENCY PROFILES FOR FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND CONSTITUENCY PROFILES FOR FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION MAKE EDUCATION COUNT IN NORTHERN IRELAND Introduction It’s 2010 – the second decade of the 21st century – and it remains a stark reality that Northern Ireland is still riddled with some of the more dire statistics in the UK, when it comes to educational attainment and employment. Northern Ireland is bottom of UK tables that measure employment rates and people with qualifications, according to UCU analysis. Just over two-thirds of people in Northern Ireland (69.7%) are employed, the worst percentage of the UK's 12 regions. The South East of England tops the table with over three-quarters of people (78.5%) employed. The average is 74%. Northern Ireland has the highest percentage of people without qualifications. One in five (21.8%) have no qualifications, which is a long way off the national average of 12.4%. Northern Ireland fares slightly better when it comes to the percentage of people with a degree though. Over a quarter of people (25.7%) have a degree, which puts Northern Ireland in the middle of the regions' table but still some way behind the average of 29%.
