Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to protest the proposal to develop and expand the "Tioga Inn" site. I have been voting the Mono Basin since 1978, first as a researcher on the gull population, later to expose my family and my students to the marvellous landscape. The proposed inn development would have serious visual impacts on the lake environment, detracting from the enjoyment of the entire region. In addition. I am concerned by the effects of additional light pollution in the basin.

9/7/2010 www.rgj.com | Printer-friendly article … September 5, 2010 First-timer's guide to Yosemite Valley By Geralda Miller [email protected] Sydney Hale has traveled many places but said she always wanted to visit Yosemite National Park. She has a longtime admiration for John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club and advocate for the preservation of America's wilderness areas, and Ansel Adams, a photographer known for his black-and- white photographs of Yosemite. "It's just been my dream," said the 74-year-old from Preston, Idaho, while riding a bus with her husband, Nathan. "So, I'm dragging him." The couple rose before sunrise on a recent weekday for the four-hour ride on the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System, YARTS, from Mammoth Lakes, Calif., to Yosemite Valley. "This is pretty nice to have someone else do the driving," she said. It's also a pretty nice way to visit one of the most famous national parks in the world, which boasted almost 3.9 million visitors in 2009. Because if its popularity, lodging and campsites in the park must be booked months in advance. For the late planner who lives on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and wants to visit this majestic area, staying in Mammoth Lakes is a good alternative. Not only is it close to the national park via a scenic drive on Tioga Road, Mammoth Lakes also offers an abundance of outdoor activities. YARTS' slogan is "You Could Drive, But Why?" That was the question I, too, asked.

  • 2016 Annual Report
2016 Mono Lake Committee ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CHAIR OF THE BOARD Fall 2016 We now have had five years of drought at Mono Lake, and the lake is down over six feet. We were hopeful that a big winter last year would put the lake back on the rise, but El Niño didn’t deliver even an average amount of snowfall. We can take solace, though, in the State Water Board rules that protect the lake in this situation by sharing the pain of the drought between the lake and Los Angeles, achieved thanks to the hard work of the Mono Lake Committee and supporters like you. For perspective, without the Committee’s work, Mono Lake would be about 30 vertical feet lower than it is today. That is the difference between today’s recovering ecosystem, and lake past the point of ecological collapse. The protections that are in place are working. For example: because of the low lake level, water diversions to Los Angeles have been decreased from 16,000 to 4,500 acre-feet. That’s a 70% decrease in water exports leaving the Mono Basin or, in our terms, more water to help Mono Lake weather the drought. Mono Lake has another thing going for it too—you. The Mono Lake Committee membership is a dedicated group of people who care deeply about Mono Lake, and are determined to figure out the best things for the lake no matter what the circumstances. Together we figure out smart ways to protect this remarkable place and—as you’ll see in the pages of this Annual Report—we make it happen.

Several Good Reasons to Explore Central California and Nevada from the “Dry Lake”. From the viewpoint of an uninitiated geoscientist or layperson, Turlock, California is a rather bland and uneventful place. Its location smack-dab in the middle of the Great Central Valley, one of the least topographically varied regions in the entire world, has contributed to the teenage angst-ridden perception that Turlock, a town of just over 70,000 residents, is the most boring place on the face of the planet. Indeed, Turlock is flat, dry, hot and hazy in the summer with little in the way of amusement venues. Winter isn’t much better; occasional rains dampen the ground just enough to create a seemingly unending thickness of Tule Fog that can dampen even the most optimistic spirits.
