To mine owners,: mine managers, managers'of balllks;,and-~others;·,the,Depart;. ment acknowledges its indebtedness, and thanks them for the assistance and information they have given. The returns for the year show'that 965,573 tons 15 cwt. 'of quartz have been 'raised. ,This amount is less by 46,234 tons 9 cwt. than the quantity raised during 1876. But little difficulty exists in checking the estimated yield of gold from quartz mining, as reluctance on th~ part of mine owners .to reveal the results of their crushing opemtions is seldom shown, and hence the totals of the yield of gold from. quartz, quartz tailings, and pyrites treated,·:added. together, closely approximate to the estimated ,total yield. ·So far,· however, .as..regards ,allu:vial,.mining,·the· estimated--yield, must :remain with9ut a confirming.~heckmntil a greater, number ofpersons superintending this branch of mi~ing ,keep records:of the amount of ..washdirt~and1cement,operatedon,', , The estimates of .gold raised. in Victoriaduring,the\ past, six:years are respec tively as follow :

As usual, the Gippsland and Ararat districts hold the first and second places in regard to high average yields of gold; but the number of tons crushed in these districts is small as compared with the number treated in the districts of Sandhurst and Ballarat.

The quantity of washdirt puddled or sluiced during' the year 1877, compiled Washdlrn.. from the returns made by certain companies and individual miners, was 674,921 tons; and the yield therefi'om 34,065 ozs. 4 dwts. 2 grs., or an average of 1 dwt. 2'16 grs. per ton. Information has been obtained respecting the crushing of 24,615 tons 16 cwt. Cement., of cement, which yielded 6,144 ozs. 18 dwts. 15 grs. of gold, or an average of 4 d"yts. 23'82 grs. per ton.

The produce of the tin·ore ~melted amouuted to 22 tons 11 cwt., which W,lS sold in Melbourne at the rate of £62 lOs. per ton. 'rhere were 44 tons 12 ewt. of black saud shipped to England hy the United Eldorado Company. The price of black sand dUl'ing the year has ranged from £22 to £24 per ton. It wili he observed that the great proportion of the black sand has been obtained from the three claims at work at Eldorado.. The drought duriug the year completely dried up the whole of the tin bearing creeks ",\ling froUl the Pilot and Dingle Ranges. These creeks can only be worked profitably in Very wet seasons. Mr. G. Head Murphy, the Warden's Clerk at Foster, reports that during the el1.rly part of the year 1877 Mr. John Amery found large quantities of tin-ore on a tributary of the Franklin River, which yielded on an average about 70 per cent. of pure tin and 0'1 per cent. of gold. He hus obtained a lease of 320 acres, and has applied for 100 aeres more under a race license, Further prospecting has proved heyond doubt the payable nature of the tin in this locality. Mr. A lOery ha~ cut a track for a proposed flume from the Agnes River and a tramway to the Franklin.' . He further reports the discovery of some rich prospects of stream tin nenr the head of the , Mount Benak, upon which two minel'Ul leases have been applied for, Stream tin workiugs are vigol'onsly progressing on the Bunyip. The Mining Registrar for the Tarwin subdivision states, in hi,; quarterly reports, that Mr. John Amery, who for the last couple of years has been employing from two to three men prospecting, has now obtained tin on a tributary of the Franklin River, twelve miles froUl Foster, in what he believes to be payable quantities, A sample of tiu·ore from gave, on assay, 61 pel' cent. of metallic. tin. A sample of till-sand from the Upper Yarra yielded, upon assay, 72 per cent. of metallic tin. Tin-ore in small quantities was found in a sample of titaniferolls iron sand and quartz grains from the , Gippsland. Five leases arc in force to mine for tin and ores of tin over 1,196a. The lessees of a coal mine at Westel'll Port report that during the past year operations were impeded hy insufficient means of transit from the mine to the place of shipment, but that 2,420 tons of coal have been raised. 'J'he lessees of It coal lease at Coleraine state that a shaft has been SUlIk to a depth of about 240 feet, and is still being suuk, in hopes of finding a. payable seam of coal. 'I'he lessees of 11 lease at Denison, near Sale, report that their mine will become remunerative as SOOIl as railway communication is opened up with ?l1elbonl'lle. . . 'l'he Mining Registrar for the Traralgon snbdivision of the Gippsland Mining District reported, at the end of September last, that a. scum of coal had been found at the head of Tyers Creek. It was intcuded, he stated, to use it (if it answered the purpose) for smelting the copper-ore at Cooper's Creek . . In February ISn, l\1r. Peter Mills reported the di8covery of an outcrop of coal on his selection on Mosquito Creek, near the ]\:[oe. He stated tlmt he traced it upwards fl'Orn the r,reck lor sonae distance, and that on sinking to " depth of 15 feet carne upon a seam 2 feeL in thiekness. " The discovery of a. Vahltl.ble coal seam in South Gippsland was, in March 1877, reportcd hy Mr. R. A. F. Murray, Geolo gieal Surveyor. 'fhe discovery was made by a person uurned W!llter Powell, at t.he head of the Mosquito Creek, betwecn the N arracan Swamp and the Moe Creek, the locality heing about four miles from the nearest point on the Gippsland Rail\\·ay. The seam, at the outcrop, was IS inches thick. Although the qnality of the coal on the surface Was somewhat deteriorated by atmospheric action, on heing traced a few feet it was found to improve in quality and to increase to a width of 2 feet. A portion of the coal was analysed by MI'. The coal is of a good quality, and closely resembles sonle of the best samples from Cape PatterBon and Killmnda." A seam of coal was reportcd to have bcen di:,;covcl'cd Ht Coleraine ahont the middle of the year. The first Seam was struck at a. depth of 10 leet; it was 3 inches in thickuess, and was composed of what is known as .. brown coal," At 42 feet, a sellm 15 inches thick, of a decidedly better quality of coal, was gone through. Another 12 feet of Illarl was pierced, and at the depth of 54 fect It seam of still better quality was met with, 20 inches ill thickness; and at 74 feet, tl. "hurd band" of coal 22 inches thiek was pierced. I30ring was proceeded with, hut it Was not u[Jtil It depth of 162 leet 5 inches had heen attained that any fresh discovery was made. At. this depth the hodng-rods wont through ,I scnm of coal 5 feet 6 inches wide. The coal was not ,0WI, but consisted of three brLnds, the intervening bands consisting of brown coal. Up to September last the boring-shaft had reached a depth of 185 feet, and ten seams had been gone through. '1'he samples of coal obtained burn well, and arc stated to resemble those obtained from the Ncwcastle and other known beds of coal. The prospector, W. Priest, is of opinion that some 300 feet in depth will have to be reached before a papble seam is obtained, A company has been formed to work the mine. A sample ofeoal was exhibitod in Salo c1uring the month of September 1S77 by Captain Bell of Carolina_ Tile coal was found by him ou high land betweeu Lake R~eves and Aitken's homestead. A quantity of loose coal was seen lying about, but no seam was visible, but the discoverer intilllated his intention of making search lor one, as he fancied the coal found mnst have been broken off an outcrop in the vicinily. , A discovery of coni was made during the year on McClintock's land, neal' Clifton township, oll Lhe Colao road. Some workmen making a wcll, at the depth of 31 feet passed through several thin hyers of coal, tlu; thickness of which, it is stated, would not justify an expenditure of moncy for prospccting purposes. A sample ofbl'ight black c,)al, from Gippsland, very friable, and the joints of which were coated with carbonate of lime and oxide of iron, gave, upon analysis:-Volatile matter, 28'79 per cent. ; fixed carbon, 51'79 per cent.; ash, 13'20 pel' cent.; total,100'00. The lessces of a lease at Lal Lal state, in their return of lessees' operations during the year 1877, that they have raised 277 tons 10 cwt. of lignite. . In January 1877, the Mining Surveyor of the Skipton Distriet reported to the :vnning Department an alleged discovery of coal in that locality. 1I1r. Krause, Government Gcological Surveyor, who officially examined the locality, in his report to the Mining Department, pointed out that the country around Skipton is occupied by Upper Volcanic lava, resting, probably, upon Older Paleozoic rock~, while three and a half milcs further east, and thence to thc Flllgstaff Hili, neal' Linton's, there is granite, which, 110 doubt, nnderlies the basalt uninterruptedly to Nnllirnia and Mount Emu. The patch of Silurian near the east boundary of the township of Skipton is traversed by a quartz vein, which ,was tested in a shallow 8haft and abandoned. Hecently, says Mr. Krause, search was again made for this vein, and a few shallow pits were sunk under the talus of t.he basaltic cliff, striking a. black bituminous clay. 'rhis, no doubt, led to the statement that the coal-bearing rocks of the Otway.District were represented in the local it)'. All indication of the presence of the Mesozoic or older carbonaceous veins were found by him to be absolutely wanting. 'fhe strata passed thl'ough indicates a narrow P!iocene vein-channel, filled with clay, s!lnd, and gravel, and containing an abundance of drift wood, p~rtly unaltered and partly in a sub· fossil statc, and converted into peat or lignite. Mr. Krause points out that the term" seam" is not applicaille under thcse conditions; and the thIckness of the deposit is equivalent. in Victorian mining parlance, "to the depth of sending into the gutter· bed." He found the liguitell"of " bright jet-black color, and extremely brittle. although it showed conchoidal fracture. It ignited only at a very high temperature, owing. no doubt, to the small percentnge of fixed carbon comparcd to the large amount of hygroscopic water. Judging by the indications of the workings which Mr. Krause inspected, he thought the matel'ial was of but littie vaillcaa a fuel. .,\ sample of what was supposed to be lignite was found, about the middle of 187., in the Taliara district, at'a depth of 35 feet below the surface. . A sample of brown coal lignite from the was submitted to analysis. In 100 parts it contained :-Water. 28'40 per cent.; volatile matter, 33'06 per cent.; fixed carbon, 33'96 per eent.; ash, {'58 per cent. It would make a good fud if dried artificially or exposed to the air in sheds. MISCELLANEOUS MINERALS.

J AMESONITE. The Warden's Clerk at Tarrangower states that the only new mineral found in the district during 1877 was Jamesonite (double sulphide of lead and antimony), in small bunches of acicnlar crystals, associated with molybdenum in quartz. The specimen was discovered by MI'. John Hornsby, the chairman of tlte committee of the Maldon Athenreum alld Mining Museum, a considerable distance from the antimony deposits.

MANGANESE. A sample of earthy manganese-ore from Costerfield was submitted for analysis. It was found to be largely impregnated with oxide of iroll and clayey matter, and did not ~ontl>in any cobalt. On account of its impurity, it was of' no commercial value. ' OLIVINE. A highly felepathic porphyritic basalt specimen from Learmonth was found to enclose olivine. Oliviue was also found in samples of scoria from the samc place.

LIMESTONE. The Registrar for the Tarwin subdivisioll of the Gippsland Miniug Dist.rict, in his reports for the quarters ending June and September, stated that the lime-kilns at Waratah Bay were progressing rapidly, that a jetty of 500 feet had been run out, and that other improvements had been completed. A lease is held behind the Waratah Lime and Marule Oompany's ground, on which are large quarries of grey limestoue, which has been proved suitaule for uuilding purposes. '

FREESTONE. Mr. Cosmo Newbery paid a visit,of inspection to tile Mount Aur'upt freestone quarries at Dnnkeld, and was favorably impresscd with the quality of tb.e stone. He condemned, however, the nse of blasting as a means of getting out the material. Freestone should never be subjected to the action of cxplosives, liS blasting tends to shalter the stone and to damage a far greatcr quantity than it relllOYCS.

SULPHUR. A sample of limonite from Dandenong was, upou analysis, found to contain a large quantity of sulphU!'.

PHOSPHORUS. Pho~phorus was found in a large percentage in a sample of urown iron-ore from Blackwood, and also in a brown hematite specimen from Ghost Creek.

GYPSUM. A discovery of gypsum haR been made neal' Kerang.
