The Jacobite Rebellion of 1719: Revenge and Regrets by PJ Klinger October, 2013 Director of Thesis: Dr. Jonathan Reid Major Department: History The Jacobite Rebellion of 1719 was an ambitious failed attempt by Spain and the Jacobites to restore the exiled Stuart king James III to the British throne. Because of its failure, the 1719 rebellion has received little attention from scholars. This thesis examines the Jacobite Rebellion of 1719 and the roles that Spain and the Jacobites had during this rebellion and creates a full narrative of the planning and execution of the rebellion. In examining these roles this thesis traces the origins of the rebellion, determines fault for the rebellion’s failure, and for the first time reconstructs the weather that played a pivotal role in the failure of the rebellion. This thesis argues that the 1719 rebellion was in fact a significant Jacobite rebellion that could have potentially shifted the balance of power in Europe during the early eighteenth century had it not been for the intervention of the weather. Constable for the Scottish History Society 1895 PREFACE The Letter Book of the second Duke of Ormonde, now edited for the Scottish History Society, was acquired by the British Museum in November 1890, and is catalogued as No. 33,950 of the Additional Manuscripts. It is a thin vellum-covered volume, consisting of ninety folios, and containing copies, kept in the handwriting of two secretaries, of letters written by the Duke between November 4th, 1718, and September 27th, 1719. Twenty-three of the letters are addressed to Prince James Francis Edward Stuart, and fifty-seven to Cardinal Alberoni. They relate almost entirely to the Cardinal’s pro- jected invasion of this country in 1719 on behalf of the exiled Stuarts, which ended in the Earl Marischal’s landing in the West Highlands and the Battle of Glenshiel. -

The Hogan Family in Portugal A chronicle of the lives of four illustrious family members Mark Crathorne The Hogan family has lived in Portugal for over 300 years. Portugal, along with Spain, was a preferred refuge for persecuted Irish Catholics during the 17th Century, either during the ‘Flight of the Earls’ in 1607 (which brought the O’Neill’s, the claimants to the Irish throne, to Portugal), or when Cromwell's Parliamentarian army defeated the Irish Confederate and Royalist coalition in 1652 and occupied Ireland, or in the 1690s, at the onset of Protestant English rule. The latter was the case of the first Hogan, many of whose descendants live in various parts of Portugal. The following recounts the history of four prominent members of the Hogan family over a span of three centuries. John Hogan (1675 - about 1733) The noble families of Ireland were destroyed and dispersed after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, when the protestant King William of Orange defeated the catholic King James II, who had been deposed two years before in 1688, becoming the last Roman Catholic monarch to reign over the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. John Hogan was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, to such a family, in 1675, before these turbulent times. He was orphaned as a young teenager and was brought up by his elder brother, under the protection of the 1st Duke of Ormande, James Butler (1610 to 1688). Ormande had been appointed the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, i.e., the head of the Irish government, in 1643, by King James II and later became the leading commander of the Royalist forces of Charles 1st, fighting against Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland from 1649 to 1650. -

COURSE OBJECTIVE The students will achieve a clear understanding of Iberian civilization during the Middle Ages. They will also gain a critical view toward Hispanic civilization, which will allow them to reassess and evaluate problems such as social diversity, identity and religious tolerance. Particular issues concerning Spain will be placed in a broader historical context to understand the contribution of Spain to Western Civilization. II. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course analyzes the evolution of the Reconquest, the formation of medieval kingdoms, and the final unification of Spain. Special attention will be paid to the interaction ( convivencia ) between Christians, Muslims, and Jews and their crucial contribution to the formation of the Spanish national character. Reading of primary sources will also be included in the course in order to gain a first-hand knowledge of essential historical issues and to develop an analytical and critical approach towards history. III. GRADING AND CLASS ATTENDANCE Class attendance is compulsory during discussion sessions, more than three unjustified absences will lower the final grade.
