The Museum presents a special showing of a Victorian-era entertainment with a lantern-slide shows for adults and children on November 30 and December 1, as well as daily screenings of classic Hollywood films featuring Joan Blondell from December 19 through 31. Special exhibitions featuring the rarely exhibited drawings of Georges Seurat and the contemporary sculpture of Martin Puryear are on view through the holiday season, and a major exhibition of the etchings of British artist Lucian Freud opens on December 16. MoMA is located in midtown Manhattan, just steps from Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, and Radio City Music Hall. WESTERNS AVAILABLE ON DVD AT YOUR LIBRARY FAMOUS ADAPTATIONS 3:10 to Yuma This tale of a rancher badly in need of money who volunteers to help guard an infamous outlaw en route to prison is based on an Elmore Leonard short story and has been adapted twice for the big screen. The 1950s film stars Van Heflin as the rancher and Glenn Ford as the outlaw while the 2007 version features Christian Bale as the rancher and Russell Crowe as his infamous nemesis. The Magnificent Seven The 1960 American remake of a Japanese film transferred the action to the Old West and featured some of the then-biggest names in Hollywood (including Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson) as gunfighters hired to protect a small Mexican village from a psychotic outlaw (Eli Wallach) and his gang. The recent remake keeps the Old West setting and includes Denzel Washington, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Chris Pratt as some of the guns for hire. True Grit True Grit is a stellar novel about a determined young woman named Mattie who hires the irascible Rooster Cogburn to hunt down the outlaw who murdered her father. The original 1960s movie won John Wayne a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Cogburn while the more modern version (starring Jeff Bridges) won the Coen Brothers much acclaim for its departure from their usual distinctive style. WESTERN TELEVISION SERIES Bonanza The Cartwrights are a wealthy family of ranchers in Nevada, circa the 1860s. The show focuses on the adventures of level-headed, wise Cartwright patriarch Ben (Lorne Green) and his 3 adult sons: intellectual Adam (Pernell Roberts), gentle Hoss (Dan Blocher), and fiery Little Joe (Michael Landon). -

Monday 25 July 2016, London. Ahead of Kirk Douglas’ 100th birthday this December, BFI Southbank pay tribute to this major Hollywood star with a season of 20 of his greatest films, running from 1 September – 4 October 2016. Over the course of his sixty year career, Douglas became known for playing iconic action heroes, and worked with the some of the greatest Hollywood directors of the 1940s and 1950s including Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Kubrick. Films being screened during the season will include musical drama Young Man with a Horn (Michael Curtiz, 1949) alongside Lauren Bacall and Doris Day, Stanley Kubrick’s epic Spartacus (1960), Champion (Mark Robson, 1949) for which he received the first of three Oscar® nominations for Best Actor, and the sci- fi family favourite 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Richard Fleischer, 1954). The season will kick off with a special discussion event Kirk Douglas: The Movies, The Muscles, The Dimple; this event will see a panel of film scholars examine Douglas’ performances and star persona, and explore his particular brand of Hollywood masculinity. Also included in the season will be a screening of Seven Days in May (John Frankenheimer, 1964) which Douglas starred in opposite Ava Gardner; the screening will be introduced by English Heritage who will unveil a new blue plaque in honour of Ava Gardner at her former Knightsbridge home later this year. Born Issur Danielovich into a poor immigrant family in New York State, Kirk Douglas began his path to acting success on a special scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he met Betty Joan Perske (later to become better known as Lauren Bacall), who would play an important role in helping to launch his film career. -

Since its 1903 debut, with Ethel Barrymore starring in a comedy titled Cousin Kate , the Hudson, Tlocated on West 44th Street, between Seventh and Sixth Avenues, has played host to premieres by Somerset Maugham, Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, and Lillian Hellman, starring, among others, Judith Anderson, Van Heflin, Maureen Stapleton, Laurence Olivier, Jason Robards Jr., Jane Fonda, and Geraldine Page. The theatre has had many lives since in the following decades; its return provides Broadway with a much-needed additional house for intimate drama and musicals. As a bonus, its new owner, the London-based Ambassador Theatre Group, appears determined to keep the Hudson busy. The theatre reopened in March, with a limited-engagement revival of the musical Sunday in the Park with George , starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford. It will be followed by a stage adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 , a transfer from London’s Almeida Theatre, starring Tom Sturridge, Olivia Wilde, and Reed Birney. Originally designed by William H. McElfatrick, a noted turn-of-the-last-centu - a k ry theatre architect, the Hudson was built by Henry B. Harris, a successful pro - a M g ducer, who also was responsible for the Fulton Theatre, later known as the e r G : Helen Hayes, on 46th Street. -

GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.
