On the occasion of the entry of General Franco's forces into Bilbao injune I937, Mussolini sent a telegram to Franco in the course ofwhich he stated: 'I wish to express to Your Excellency my warmest felicitations on the great enterprise which has reunited for the country of Spain one ofits noblest provinces and which marks a gigantic step forward towards the full triumph of the National cause.' 2. In August I937 on the fall of Santander. 3· In October I937• on the first anniversary of General Franco's assumption of the headship of the state, Mussolini addressed to him a telegram which included the following sentence: 'In the name of Fascist Italy which has followed with passionate solidarity these heroic events, I add the most fervent wishes for the complete triumph of the Nationalist Spanish cause as personified by Your Excellency.' 4· In his speech delivered at Genoa on I4 May I938, Mussolini said: 'They [the French) desire the victory of Barcelona, we on the other hand desire, and mean to see, the victory of Franco.' 5· In conversation with Lord Perth on 2ojune I938, Count Ciano said: 'Franco trusted Signor Mussolini and Signor Mussolini would stand by him.' He also said that once Mussolini had given his friendship he would stand by his friend to the last resort. 6. In July I 938, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Spanish National Movement Mussolini stated in a telegram to General Franco: 'Fascist Italy is proud of having contributed ..
