WSAV002643 Summary Information Repository: Walter P. Reuther Library Creator: Wayne State University Title: Wayne State University Photograph Collection ID: WSAV002643 Date [inclusive]: circa 1945-2003 Physical Description: 130 Linear Feet (30 file cabinets, 35 OS). Contains prints and negatives. Language of the English Material: Language of the Material entirely in English. Material: Abstract: The University Relations Division dates back to the early days of the university and reflects the activities of WSU's public relations offices. Undergoing several name changes (Community Relations), reporting structures, and unit services, it maintained a focus on communication and interpretation of the university's work both internal and external to the university. By 1961, photography had become a major facet of public awareness programs. Sixteen years later as part of the Media Services and Information Services units it became integral to conveying university related activities, events, and higher education to the general public through mass media. The collection is largely the output of communications, community, and university relations work conducted under the auspices of the University Relations Division. Depicted are activities, events, and places on or around the university's Detroit campus as well as the people associated with its academic and administrative functions. Student life, from classroom learning to sports; the built environment and physical growth of the campus; and portraits of faculty and staff are particularly well represented. WSAV002643 History Wayne State University (WSU), founded in 1868 as the Detroit Medical College, formed through the merging of six different colleges (liberal arts, education, pharmacy, engineering, medicine, and graduate studies) in 1933. Undergoing a physical expansion during the post WWII years into a modern college campus, WSU's administration and student body likewise swelled. This expansion waned during the economic hardship of the 1980s, to gain traction again during the 1990s and on into the 2000s. Still largely a commuter campus since the 1950s, the university has invested in new campus housing as well as research and learning facilities in recent years. An urban university known for serving the most diverse student body in Michigan, WSU has traditionally maintained close ties with the surrounding Midtown community and the city of Detroit.
