OLINGER, Stella Marie Olinger (Abstracted from https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/heraldtribune/obituary.aspx?n=stella-marie- olinger&pid=174638122&fhid=8480) Stella Marie Olinger (nee La Salvia) of Lakewood Ranch, FL died peacefully on April 9, 2015. She underwent a double lung transplant in Sept 2013, and due to some related and unrelated medical problems remained hospitalized from that date. She struggled and fought hard to get well and after significant progress, she experienced a series of unrelated setbacks that weakened her to the point where she could no longer recover. A 'Celebration of Her Life' memorial will be held at Toale Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sarasota. Funeral and internment in Section 5, Site 710 at Sarasota VA National Cemetery will be a private family affair with a few very close friends the day prior. Born July 15, 1943 in Newark, NJ, she graduated from Newark State College (now Keane University) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in June 1965. She was a certified 7-12 math teacher. She married 2d Lt Preston Russel Olinger in July 1965, and together they embarked on a 26 year Air Force career, 49 years of marriage, and 54 years of friendship and devotion to one another. As an Air Force wife she moved 11 times all over the US from coast to coast in support of her husband's career as an AF pilot. At every new location, she involved herself in the local area and contributed her skills and knowledge to the betterment of the community. She taught 3rd grade in Georgia for a year, 7 & 8 grade in Ohio for a year, and 10-12 grade in Virginia for a year. However, Stella's primary interests were in the arts. She enjoyed oil painting and displayed and sold some of her art in local art shows, but never took up painting seriously. She started an arts council in Papillion, Nebraska, brought live performances to the town, and started many other arts projects there. She was on the board of the Metropolitan Arts Council and later became director of the Nebraska Assembly of Community Arts Councils, a state organization that administered to and mentored over 35 arts organizations throughout the state. In Virginia, she became the Executive Director of the Prince William County Symphony Orchestra, a small local community orchestra with volunteer musicians and a very limited following. In eight years, she grew the orchestra into an 80 member professional and unionized orchestra with a nationally known conductor with attendance numbers between 1000-1200 and a seven-fold increase in its budget. The Washington Post referred to the PW Symphony as the 'Jewel in the Crown of Prince William County. She started her own consulting business with clients such as the American Symphony Orchestra League, the Fairfax and Alexandria Virginia symphony orchestras as well as other clients on the national, regional, and local levels. She was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to a state arts panel that reviewed grant applications and doled out state funds to various arts organizations throughout the state. She then became the arts liaison in PW County to over 28 arts organizations, providing them guidance and direction to successfully bring their arts programs to the people of the county. She had her own local TV show where she covered the local art scene. She was also a certified grants writer and worked with many arts and other nonprofits in applying for state and foundation grants. Concurrently with all these activities she had two sons, Carson and Russel. In the early years she had to raise her sons almost singlehandedly as her pilot husband was involved in the Viet Nam conflict for nearly 2 1/2 years out of a five year stretch. She loved to cook, especially Italian food (her father was from Italy and a significant number of her extended family live in Italy). She was a gourmet cook and enjoyed preparing everything from scratch. Upon retirement to Florida in 2003, Stella became an active member of the Lakewood Ranch Rotary Club, was a Club board member, and a founding board member of Shelterbox USA. She started the local Italian-American Club which has grown to over 300 members. She was a grants writer for Meals on Wheels Plus in Bradenton, FL. She became a social reporter for a local newspaper, had a regular column in another paper, and regularly wrote articles for some local magazines. She is survived by her husband Preston, her youngest son Russel, her son Carson and his wife, Elizabeth and two grandsons, Caden (9) and Garrett (5). She also is survived by her younger sister Maria and her husband Robert. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Stella be sent to the American Lung Association.

ORESKO, Nicholas Oresko (Abstracted from the Jersey Record, Saturday October 5, 2013) Nicholas Oresko of Cresskill, the nation’s oldest recipient, died Friday evening, surrounded by veterans and military personnel who had gathered there all week after hearing on social media that he was in the hospital with a broken leg. Oresko, 96, was a U.S. Army master sergeant during World War II when, although badly wounded, he wiped out two enemy bunkers near Tettingen, Germany, during the Battle of the Bulge. He died at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center of complications from surgery for a broken right femur, said John “Jack” Carbone, a family friend. That was the same leg injured by gunfire on Jan. 23, 1945, as he crawled from one enemy bunker to another. Oresko had no living immediate family, but he was never alone at the hospital after being taken there earlier in the week from a Cresskill assisted living facility, Carbone said. Veterans and young members of various branches of military service were at his side, with more than two dozen at the hospital Friday afternoon before he was taken to have surgery. “The kids held his hand and prayed with him,” Carbone said. One of Oresko’s friends, Richard E. Robitaille, had sent emails about the honored veteran’s condition this week to students at Berkeley College in Woodland Park, where he is the vice president of military veterans affairs. Robitaille said those students posted the information on Facebook and other sites, leading to a massive outpouring of affection for Oresko from people across the country. “They understood the type of person we were talking about and said, ‘We can’t let him die alone,’” Robitaille said, adding that people have come from as far away as Maine and Maryland to visit Oresko during the week. “He’s loved throughout the Army. He’s an American hero.” He said that an Army unit in Afghanistan waved a flag in Oresko’s honor on Tuesday and mailed it to the hospital, but it had not yet arrived. Another longtime friend who was at the hospital on Friday, Bob Jerome of Park Ridge, said Oresko enjoyed speaking to young people. The high school in Bayonne, where Oresko grew up, was named in his honor a few years ago. Oresko talked about his experiences in battle for a story published in The Record in January 2012. In the early morning hours on Jan. 23, 1945, the 28-year-old set off to take out an enemy machine-gun bunker. “We [had] attacked their positions several times, and we got beaten back,” he said. “It’s terrible. It scares the hell out of you. “So we figured this time, let’s sneak up on them,” Oresko said. “Instead of getting prepared with artillery fire, let’s just go as it gets dark and sneak up on them and then attack ’em.” Oresko started out solo at 4:30 a.m. that cold winter morning. And he was resigned to not coming back alive. “I looked up to heaven and said, ‘Lord, I know I’m going to die, please make it fast,’ ’’ he said. He tossed a grenade into the bunker and then rushed it with his M-1 rifle. Another machine gun opened fire and knocked him down, wounding him in the right hip and leg, yet he managed to crawl to another bunker and take it out with another grenade. “The machine gunner who shot me thought I was dead,” Oresko said. “I was able to move around, sneak around, so they didn’t see me. They saw me go down. They thought they’d killed me, but they didn’t. I slipped around and somehow got around, and they were in a bunch.” Oresko killed 12 German soldiers and refused to leave the area until he was sure his unit had completed its mission. “They wanted to take me back to the hospital,” Oresko said. “I said ‘No, let’s take the position first.’ I didn’t want to give it up after doing so much.” President Harry S. Truman presented the Medal of Honor to Oresko during a White House ceremony on Oct. 30, 1945. Funeral arrangements were pending Friday night. Carbone said that Oresko will be buried at the George Washington Cemetery in Paramus toward the end of next week.

SCHRANDT, Tim Schrandt (Abstracted from a story on Twisted Twigs On Gnarled Branches Genealogy) Tim Schrandt, age 63, of Spillville, IA died on Friday, March 29, 2019 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI after a short battle with cancer. A funeral service will be at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military rites. Tim Schrandt made his last inappropriate comment on March 29, 2019. If you are wondering if you may have ever met him, you didn't - because you WOULD remember. For those of you that did meet him, we apologize, as we're sure he probably offended you. He was world renowned for not holding back and telling it like it is. Tim was born to William (Bill) Schrandt and Mary (Schrandt) Manning on June 11, 1955 - 100 years too late. Given Tim's demeanor he would have been the perfect weathered cowboy in the old west or rough and tough pioneer, or maybe he just should have been Amish. Tim was the 4th of 8 kids, the bottom rung of the top tier (the big kids). Instead of taking his place on that rung, listening to the older kids and doing as he was told by his older siblings, he decided to anoint himself "king" of the 4 little kids. Tim spent his childhood and early adulthood ordering them around and in general, tormenting them. He was a great orator, (not like Shakespeare, but more like Yogi Berra), as he always had something to say, and always had to get in the last word. His position as "king" and orator was challenged by the nuns at St. Wenceslaus School in Spillville. He may have met his match. We’re not saying the nuns won, but they put up a good fight, we mean literally - he got into a fist-a-cuff with a nun. In fairness, she probably started it. You didn't take a swing at Tim and not expect one back. Tim's fondness for authority (his own - not others) followed him to South Winneshiek High School in Calmar and later into the Army. This provided for many interesting episodes and stories, detentions and demotions, and a few "run ins" with the law, not just locally, but globally. Tim worked at Camcar / Stanley Black and Decker in Decorah as a tool and die maker for 30 plus years. Tim worked with many friends and “a bunch of morons”. His words, not ours. Well not exactly his, words because that would have included a bunch of swear words. Tim leaves behind a hell of a lot of stuff that his family doesn't know what to do with. So, if you are looking for a Virgin Mary in a bathtub shrine (you Catholics know what we’re talking about) you should wait the appropriate amount of time and get in touch with them. Tomorrow would be fine. In addition to his stuff he leaves behind two great boys who he was extremely proud of, Cody (Jenny) Schrandt and Josh (Lydia) Schrandt were the product of his marriage to Crystal Hilmer. He will be missed by his two granddaughters that he adored and taught to cuss, Peyton and MacKenna. Also left to keep the stories alive (but damn, there won’t be any new material) are his mother Mary Manning and siblings Mike (Rita Dixon) Schrandt, Marty (Clint) Berg, Becky Schrandt-Miles, Bill (Grease) Schrandt, Pam (Rick) Barnes, Peter (Sandra) Schrandt and many nieces, nephews and cousins that wanted to hang out near him, because you just knew he was going to say or do something good. It’s not that he was such a great storyteller, it’s that he WAS the story! To his siblings amazement he was actually able to snag a good woman, Cheryl Murray, and hold on to her for the past 13 years, and as far as we know restraints were not used. Tim also created great memories and stories for Cheryl’s kids Alex (Christina) Murray and Samantha (Evan) Luedking and grandkids Tatum and Grace. He will be having a reunion with his infant daughter Ashley, his brother Duke, his dad Bill Schrandt, many aunts and uncles and a handful of cousins that passed before him. Tim was in charge of getting the beer and ice for our family reunions, so they will be happy to see him. A common line in obituaries is “He never met a stranger”, in Tim’s case he never met a rule he couldn’t break, a boundary he couldn’t push, a line he couldn’t cross and a story he couldn’t stretch. Another common obituary phrase is “He’d give the shirt off his back”, well Tim was prepared to do that, and he could do it quickly, because he always wore his shirts unbuttoned ¾ the way down. Tim was anything but common! Despite his crusty exterior, cutting remarks and stubbornness, there is actual evidence that he was a loving, giving and caring person. That evidence is the deep sorrow and pain in our hearts that his family feels from his passing. Tim led a good life and had a peaceful death - but the transition was a bitch. And for the record, he did not lose his battle with cancer. When he died, the cancer died, so technically it was a tie! He was ready to meet his Maker, we're just not sure "The Maker" is ready to meet Tim. Good luck God! We are considering establishing a Go-Fund-Me account for G. Heileman Brewing Co., the brewers of Old Style beer, as we anticipate they are about to experience significant hardship as a result of the loss of Tim’s business. Keep them in your thoughts.
