Canoe and Kayak Licence Requirements Waterways & Environment Briefing Note On many waterways across the country a licence, day pass or similar is required. It is important all waterways users ensure they stay within the licensing requirements for the waters the use. Waterways licences are a legal requirement, but the funds raised enable navigation authorities to maintain the waterways, improve facilities for paddlers and secure the water environment. We have compiled this guide to give you as much information as possible regarding licensing arrangements around the country. We will endeavour to keep this as up to date as possible, but we always recommend you check the current situation on the waters you paddle. Which waters are covered under the British Canoeing licence agreements? SCRUTINISED LONG MANIFESTOS - TT20 (2ND ELECTION) CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT Amy Gregg (Ex-Treasurer, Exeter College ) - Candidate for President-Elect - Long Manifesto The Union has had significant setbacks in the last few years. I did not intend to run this term, but it is clear that the Union needs a President who has the experience and the capability to set it back on the right course. The Union can do so much better, and the Union must do so much better. As an undergraduate, I was President of the Cambridge Union. During this time I ran a record-setting membership drive, managed a £100,000 budget, and hosted over thirty speakers including Stephen Fry, Quentin Blake and Moazzam Begg. After leaving Cambridge I was a trainee solicitor at a Magic Circle Law firm, and I now hold an offer for a pupillage to be a barrister. I have real world experience which I can use to improve our Union as well. I previously served on committee for 7 terms. In this time I arranged 5 debates, including confirming 5/6 speakers for the Comedy debate. I ran Debates, Panels and Speaker events, confirmed multiple speakers and chaired the Union’s largest committee. I also spent over 50 days of vacation working for the Union and made 3 winning paper speeches. As Treasurer I secured 29 debate Floor Prizes, 12 New Treasurer’s Treats and coordinated sponsorship from a major Scholarship fund - ensuring transparency by publishing the audited accounts on the app. This demonstrates that I have the ability to run the Union, but it also made me realise: the Union needs real change - change only an experienced President can bring. -

Robert Thorpe (Class of 1988), Oakwood, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Keith Morris (Class of 1974), Gainesville, was elected Chairman of the Foundation. Thorpe received his A.S. degree from GC, and will complete his B.S. degree from Piedmont College this spring. He is a para-professional at the Gainesville-Hall County Alternative School. He is a former GC Foundation Trustee. Morris, as Fund Drive Chairman in 1994, led the Foundation in surpassing its record-high goal of $415 ,000. He is the Executive Director for the Georgia Mountains Regional Development Corporation. Lee Chapman (Class of 1984), Gainesville, was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Foundation. A for mer president of the Alumni Association, he is a mar keting representative with Jackson EMC. Others honored at the meeting included Elton Robert Thorpe (left) accepts the Distinguished Alumnus Collins, Commerce, who was named Honorary Life Award from Debby Lane and Wes Winkler. Trustee, and Frank Turk, Oakwood, who received the Distinguished Service Award. Collins served on the Board of Trustees for three years, in 1987-89, and has been a loyal supporter of the College and the Foundation throughout the years. He has been President of Community Bank & Trust in Commerce for 12 years. -

150 Obituary Notices. Sir James Alfred Ewing, K.C.B., M.A., D.Sc, LL.D., F.R.S. JAMES ALFRED EWING, a great engineer, scientific man, and charming Scot, was distinguished in many fields of activity. Born in 1855 at Dundee, where his father was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland, he grew up in an intellectual and spiritual atmosphere in which his early education was greatly influenced by his mother, whose critical taste in letters was passed on to her children. From Dundee High School Ewing proceeded in the early seventies to the University of Edinburgh, where his great ability soon manifested itself in the classes of Tait and Fleeming Jenkin, the latter of whom brought him into touch with Sir William Thomson (afterwards Lord Kelvin), then engaged in the development of submarine telegraph cables, an introduction which led to Ewing taking part in three cable-laying voyages to Brazil and the River Plate. Fleeming Jenkin was a man of wide culture, and his literary and scientific circle included Ewing and another young student, Robert Louis Stevenson, then at the commence- ment of an engineering training, soon to be abandoned for a literary career of the greatest distinction, the beginnings of which have been happily described by Ewing in "The Fleeming Jenkins and Robert Louis Steven- son." In 1878, at the early age of twenty-three, Ewing went to Japan as Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Tokyo, a post which he occupied for five years, and there he made his classical researches in the widely different fields of magnetism and seismology. -

Congratulations on joining Emmanuel — ‘Emma’ as it is affectionately known — and beginning your new postgraduate course. We are thrilled that you have chosen Emma to be your college and we hope that you are excited to be starting at Emma, and at Cambridge. But you probably also have a lot of questions. We hope that this guide will provide answers to some of those questions along with lots of other useful information, both for planning your arrival and once you are here. But let’s start right at the beginning, because some of you may be wondering what Emmanuel even is - you thought you were joining Cambridge! Well, you are. The University of Cambridge is at the same time one thing and many, being made up of many faculties and departments, and colleges. As a postgraduate student you will belong to both a department, responsible for your education, and to a college, responsible for your pastoral care, accommodation and an important part of your social life. It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

New Year's Honours: Leonie Scott-Matthews appointed an OBE for work on Pentameters Theatre and services to Hampstead PUBLISHED: 22:30 27 December 2019 | UPDATED: 16:57 28 December 2019 Harry Taylor Leonie Scott-Matthews, who founded Pentameters Theatre in 1968 and has run it ever since, has been given the gong for services to British Theatre and services to the community in Hampstead. The 78-year-old, who has lived in the area since 1961, said she was "over the moon" at the news. She said: "Always doing things my way, the alternative way, it can be quite isolating. You think 'Am I right, or am I wrong?'. I've done it in a unique way, single handedly. "We've had our ups and downs in the 51 years we've run it, with no financial aid, but we've made it work." Ms Scott-Matthews started the theatre after holding poetry sessions in the cellar of the Freemasons Arms in Downshire Hill. She then held performances in a temporary home in the former Haverstock Tavern, before making the final move to Pentameters home above the Horseshoe Pub in Heath Street where it has remained ever since. She lives a stone's throw away with her partner Godfrey Old, with whom she has a 31-year-old daughter, Alice. She grew up in Mapperley near Nottingham before escaping to the bright lights of London and the Royal Academy of Music and Drama in the 1960s. She said: "When I was in drama school in the early 1960s I fell in love with Hampstead.
