The Transfiguration of Our Lord

February 13-14, 2021

The Transfiguration of Our Lord is the apex of a liturgical season that serves as a transition from the celebration of Jesus’ nativity to the church’s reflection on His passion. There is nothing quite like being an eyewitness, giving a special perspective to share on the event. Peter writes about being on the Mount of Transfiguration as he, James, and John were privileged to have a special vision of the Lord Jesus Christ. He states: “We were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to Him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,’ we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with Him on the holy mountain” (2 Peter 1:16b–18). Today, through the words of Scripture, we, too, become eyewitnesses and are given a glimpse of glory in the vision of our transfigured Lord! Thus, the transfiguration concludes our journey through Epiphany most appropriately. Upon leaving this heavenly mount, we will make our pilgrimage through Lent toward another mountain. The transfiguration teaches us what we are to see as we cast our eyes upon the crucified King at Mount Calvary.

“Elijah, the Shadow Man” - 2 Kings 2:1-12 The author of the Book of Hebrews wrote, “The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves” (Heb. 10:1, NIV). Shadows can help us see the body that casts them more clearly, but their theological use is as a stepping stone to something more significant. In this case, Elijah’s assumption into heaven is a shadow that helps us to see the transfiguration of our Lord from a unique vantage point.

INVOCATION Take a moment when you first wake up to begin your day with the invocation and remember the grace of your baptism. End each day this week as soon as you go to bed in the same way.

CONFESSION Psalm 32:1-2, 5-7, 10 Each day confess your “sin-fullness” before God and ask Him for His forgiveness and the Holy Spirit to use you and yours to His glory.

P: O God, our Father, we admit and confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. C: Have mercy on us, and forgive us, O Lord.

+ 2 + P: We confess that we have not always brought glory to You through our words and our deeds. C: Have mercy on us, and forgive us, O Lord. P: We repent of all that is sinful in our lives, both that which we know and those things unknown to us that are against Your righteous laws. C: Have mercy on us, and forgive us, O Lord.

ABSOLUTION Think of ways you can each day this week creatively show forth (Epiphany) your sense of rejoicing that your “sin-fullness” has been cleansed.

P: Upon this your confession and by the command of our Lord, I, a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it. C: Amen.

INTROIT Psalm 99:1-5; antiphon: v. 9 If you wear a cross or have a cross hanging in your home, perhaps each day remember that cross is Not simple piece of jewelry nor a decoration on the wall but the focus and final authority in your daily life.

P: Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy! Men: The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! Women: The Lord is great in Zion; He is exalted over all the peoples. Men: Let them praise Your great and awesome name! Holy is He! Women: The King in His might loves justice. You have established equity; You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. P: Exalt the LORD our God; worship at His footstool! Holy is He! C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!

SALUTATION As you meet people throughout the coming week, pause for a moment and consider the greeting and the motivation of your heart and feelings towards the person you greet. What message do you want to send to the community around you today with your greetings?

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

+ 3 + OLD TESTAMENT READING: 2 Kings 2:1-12

Elisha knew that Elijah would soon be taken from him, so he refused to leave his side. Before Elijah was raptured, Elisha asked for a double portion of his anointing.

1When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” 4Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. 5The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” 6Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. 9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” 10And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” 11And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more.

EPISTLE READING: 2 Corinthians 3:12-18; 4:1-6

The veil that once separated us from the Father has been removed by Jesus Christ. So, we shall live openly and freely in God’s mercy rather than hide in sin and shame, shining like lights in the darkness so that God may be glorified.

12Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 1Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let + 4 + light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-9

In this awesome encounter on a mountain and in the presence of John, James, and Peter, Moses and Elijah appear and talk with Jesus who was dazzling white. Frightened and at a loss, Peter offered to build three shelters but the Lord’s voice spoke saying, “This is my Son…Listen to him!” Suddenly, only Jesus stood there as the new temple who brings the grace and glory of God to the people who follow Him.

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord.

2After six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Church Sanctuary Worship Service Guidelines

Special guidelines will be followed to help assure the safety of everyone attending church, but we know the coronavirus is still active among us. We know that God desires us all to be together in worship again, but we are also sure He wants us to use good judgement in protecting our health.

 Wearing face masks inside the church/sanctuary is REQUIRED. If you don’t have one, masks are available throughout the church, along with hand sanitizing stations. Pastor will wear a mask, except when preaching God’s Word.

 Services will be held at 6:00 pm on Saturdays, and 9:00 am & 11:00 am on Sundays. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to each service and secured during the services.

 To comply with 6’ social distancing guidelines, seating will be limited to every third pew (2 pews in between). Family groups and individuals will be separated by 6’ in each pew. Services will be limited to approximately 75 attendees. Overflow will be asked to listen to the service on FM 92.1 in their cars.

“Explaining God…”

The following was written by Danny Dutton, age 8, from Chula Vista, California, for his third grade homework assignment to “Explain God.”

“One of God’s main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die so there will be enough people to take care of things here on earth. He doesn’t make grown-up, just babies... I think because they are smaller and easier to make. Also, that way, He doesn’t have to take up His valuable time teaching them to walk and talk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.”

“God’s second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times besides bedtime. God doesn’t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because He hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in His ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere, which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn’t go wasting His time by going over your mom and dad’s head asking for something they already said you couldn’t have.”

“Jesus is God’s Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water, and performing miracles, and trying to teach the people who didn’t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him. But He was good and kind like His Father and He told His Father that they didn’t know what they were doing and to forgive them, and God said OK.”

“His Dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth, so He told him He didn’t have to go out on the road anymore; He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now He helps His Dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things that are important for God to take care of, and which ones He can take care of Himself, without having to bother God. Kind of like a secretary, only more important.”

“You can pray anything you want and they are sure to hear you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy, it’s God. Don’t skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong! And, besides, the sun doesn’t come out at the beach until noon anyway.”

“If you don’t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can’t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He’s around when you’re scared of the dark, or when you can’t swim very good and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases. And that’s why I believe in God.”
