Unfortunately, much of the material currently utilized for interpretations about the ancient Maya comes from publications written after contact by the Spanish or from artifacts with no context, likely looted items. Both sources of information can be problematic and can skew interpretations. Cosmological tales documented after the Spanish invasion show evidence of the religious conversion that was underway. Noncontextual artifacts are often altered in order to make them more marketable. An example of an iconographic theme that is incorporated into the surviving media of the ancient Maya, but that is not mentioned in ethnographically-recorded myths or represented in the iconography from most noncontextual objects, are the “travelers”: a group of gods, humans, and animals who occupy a unique niche in the ancient Maya cosmology. -

Lomitola ii ABSTRACT Small anthropomorphic figures, most often referred to as “Charlie Chaplins,” appear in ritual deposits throughout the ancient Maya sites of Belize during the late Preclassic and Early Classic Periods and later, throughout the Petén region of Guatemala. Often these figures appear within similar cache assemblages and are carved from “exotic” materials such as shell or jade. This thesis examines the contexts in which these figures appear and considers the wider implications for commonly held ritual practices throughout the Maya lowlands during the Classic Period and the similarities between “Charlie Chaplin” figures and anthropomorphic figures found in ritual contexts outside of the Maya area. iii Dedicated to Corbin and Maya Lomitola iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Drs. (FAMSI). The project, entitled Northern Yucatán Obsidian Finds - Mérida and Chichén Itzá, was conducted in México between 15 October and 16 December 1995. A second phase, consisting of the analysis of 292 obsidian artifacts by neutron activation, should be completed by 31 October 1996. Obsidian found in the northern Maya lowlands was imported from a limited number of sources in the Guatemalan and Mexican highlands. The presence of obsidian artifacts at lowland Maya sites therefore implies participation in interregional and long-distance trade networks. Although the northern lowlands have long been an important focus of obsidian-exchange studies (e.g., Hammond, 1972; Nelson, 1985), the construction and testing of diachronic trade models has been hampered by two factors. First, the sample size of sourced artifacts from the northern lowlands has been small: only 80 pieces from contexts dating to later than A.D. 600 (Nelson, 1985: Tables 11-14). As of 1994, only six pieces of obsidian from Chichén Itzá had been attributed to geological sources through chemical analysis. These were all of unknown temporal provenience and were dredged from the Sacred Cenote, a functional context so special that it cannot be interpreted as representative of the site as a whole. -

CRISIS MÚLTIPLES EN NAACHTUN: APROVECHADAS, SUPERADAS E IRREVERSIBLES Philippe Nondédéo, Alejandro Patiño, Julien Sion, Dominique Michelet y Carlos Morales-Aguilar Proyecto Petén-Norte Naachtun, CNRS, Université de Paris 1, University of Calgary Introducción Si el famoso colapso maya ha siempre atraído la atención de los investigadores para entender sus causas profundas y sus consecuencias a todos niveles en la civilización maya (véase por ejemplo entre varios otros Aimers 2007; Culbert 1973; Demarest et al. 2004), no hay que olvidar que varias crisis “menores” atravesaron la historia de las ciudades mayas. Si la de 150 d.C. cobró importancia en los años recientes por sus repercusiones en las tierras bajas centrales en particular (Hansen et al. 2008; Haug et al. 2003; Hodell et al. 2004; Wahl et al. 2007), no hay que subestimar las otras crisis, a veces poco perceptibles, que afectaron la vida de los sitios, ya sean de origen sociopolítica, económica, paleo-ambiental o de otra naturaleza. Para identificar tales crisis que afectaron, pero que no pusieron en peligro la ocupación de un sitio, la herramienta la más apropiada para el arqueólogo queda sin lugar a dudas el control de la cronología, el único medio que permite identificar fases de ruptura o de cambios rápidos en la sociedad, marcadores implícitos de fenómenos de crisis. El sitio de Naachtun se inscribe perfectamente en esta problemática ya que su historia inicia y termina con una crisis. Es un sitio de las Tierras Bajas centrales que lleva a adelantar el concepto de crisis positivas en el sentido de que una crisis no sólo puede beneficiar a ciertos individuos o comunidades sino que implica en sí y requiere a nivel de la sociedad entera cierta reorganización, cierta adaptación que permite a esta sociedad superar estos momentos de máxima tensión. -

Field work carried out in the site during the months of June–August 2003 was sponsored by the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc., (FAMSI). Previous archaeological research in Buena Vista had focused in a central area of seven hectares and reported the existence of an extensive wall system and platforms at the site which was interpreted as a storage center for exchange and resupply transactions. In this interpretation, the platforms supported perishable structures used to store trade commodities, and the wall system was built to protect these trade goods from possible pirate attacks (Sabloff and Rathje 1975, Freidel and Sabloff 1984). However, the nature and extension of the wall system around the central area had not been investigated in detail. The research objectives of this project were to analyze the Buena Vista settlement pattern following a settlement ecology model (Stone 1996, Killion 1992), which seeks to understand the relationship between population and agricultural practices in an ecological setting. The project followed a program of surface survey and mapping of the wall system, related structures, and natural features located in an area of 4 km2 around the center of the site. -

The Palos Mayan Collection sculptures are created by master sculptor Manuel Palos from scholar Joan W. Patten’s casts and rubbings of the original artifacts in Guatemala. Patten received official permission from the Guatemalan government to create casts and rubbings of original Mayan carvings and bequeathed her replicas to collaborator Manuel Palos. Some of the originals stelae were later stolen or destroyed, leaving Patten’s castings and rubbings as their only remaining record.
