Spain Manuscript received in April 2002 Several tramp ant species are found in the city of Barcelona (Espadaler & Co- llingwood 2001 and references): Lasius neglectus, Pheidole teneriffana, Para- trechina flavipes, Hypoponera punctatissima and Linepithema humile. Only the last species, the argentine ant, attains pest status in the city at present. To that small group we can now add a sixth species, the ghost ant, the first time it has been recorded in the Iberian Peninsula. Within the Iberian Tapinoma species, this ant is easily distinguished by its highly distinct bicoloured habitus (Fig. 1), with the yellowish gaster, legs and antennae, contrasting with the dark head and tho- rax. The ghost ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum) is a well known tramp species widely dispersed by human trade mainly throughout humid tropical regions (Wi- lliams 1994), although it has also been detected in the climatically much drier Arabic Peninsula (Collingwood & Agosti 1996; Collingwood et al. 1997). Its ori- gin is unknown (Wilson & Taylor 1967). Isolates have been found outside the tropics, probably carried with plant material or products from the tropics. Out- side this region, it seems to thrive only in heated buildings (DuBois & Danoff- Burg 1994) or inside structures (Klotz et al. -

Myrmecological News 16 61-66 Online Earlier, for print 2012 The odorous house ant, Tapinoma sessile (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), as a new temperate-origin invader Grzegorz BUCZKOWSKI & Paul KRUSHELNYCKY Abstract A population of the odorous house ant, Tapinoma sessile, was found at an upland site on Maui, Hawaii. Although T. sessile possesses many of the traits shared by most invasive ant species and is a significant urban pest in the continental USA, this represents the first confirmed record for this species outside its native North American range. Our survey of the site revealed a relatively large (ca. 17 ha) infestation with many closely spaced nests, possibly all belonging to a single supercolony as suggested by the lack of aggression or only occasional non-injurious aggression between workers from distant nests. The odorous house ant is currently abundant at this site, despite the presence of seven other intro- duced ant species, including the big-headed ant (Pheidole megacephala) and the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile). Based on its behavior at this site, T. sessile may successfully invade other temperate areas in the future, and should be watched for by biosecurity programs. GENERAL HOUSEHOLD PESTS Ants are some of the most ubiquitous insects found in community environments. They thrive indoors and outdoors, wherever they have access to food and water. Ants outdoors are mostly beneficial, as they act as scavengers and decomposers of organic matter, predators of small insects and seed dispersers of certain plants. However, they can protect and encourage honeydew-producing insects such as mealy bugs, aphids and scales that are feed on landscape or indoor plants, and this often leads to increase in numbers of these pests. A well-known feature of ants is their sociality, which is also found in many of their close relatives within the order Hymenoptera, such as bees and wasps. Ant colonies vary widely with the species, and may consist of less than 100 individuals in small concealed spaces, to millions of individuals in large mounds that cover several square feet in area. Functions within the colony are carried out by specific groups of adult individuals called ‘castes’. Most ant colonies have fertile males called “drones”, one or more fertile females called “queens” and large numbers of sterile, wingless females which function as “workers”. Many ant species exhibit polymorphism, which is the existence of individuals with different appearances (sizes) and functions within the same caste. For example, the worker caste may include “major” and “minor” workers with distinct functions, and “soldiers” that are specially equipped with larger mandibles for defense. Almost all functions in the colony apart from reproduction, such as gathering food, feeding and caring for larvae, defending the colony, building and maintaining nesting areas, are performed by the workers. -

Two main factors make hybridization act differently in ants than in other species: eusociality and haplodiploidy. These factors serve to reduce the costs of interspecific hybridization in ants while simultaneously allowing them to take advantage of certain benefits. Eusociality may mitigate the effects of hybridization by allowing hybrids to be shunted into the worker caste, potentially reducing the effects of hybrid sterility. In haplodiploid species, males do not have a father. They instead develop from unfertilized eggs as haploid clones of their mother. This means that interspecifically mated queens do not completely sacrifice reproductive potential even if all hybrids are sterile because they can still produce fertile males. These factors in turn suggest that hybridization should be more common among the social Hymenoptera than other animal groups. Nevertheless, current data suggest that ants hybridize at rates similar to other animal groups, although these data are limited. Furthermore, there is a large amount of overlap between cases of interspecific hybridization and cases of genetic caste determination. A majority of the cases in ants where caste is determined primarily by genotype are associated with hybridization. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Malagasy dolichoderine ant genera Aptinoma and Ravavy and the following species are newly described: Aptinoma mangabe sp. n. (type species), Aptinoma antongil sp. n., and Ravavy miafina sp. n. (type species). A key to the five dolichoderine genera of the Malagasy region based on workers is presented. Key words: Afrotropical, Malagasy endemics, arthropods, ants, Ravavy, Aptinoma, taxonomy, Dolichoderinae Introduction Field collecting in Madagascar over the last 15 years has provided a comprehensive overview of ants and other arthropods from the island (Fisher 2005, Fisher & Penny 2008). Fieldwork included sampling from the full range of vegetation, climate, elevation, and geological substrates found across Madagascar. Diverse collecting methods were used including leaf litter sifting, light traps, Malaise traps, pitfall traps, and manual hand collecting. These efforts have revealed an estimated 1,000 new ant species. However, a number of these new taxa cannot be placed in existing genera. A separate study on the phylogenetic relationships within the Dolichoderinae provided the opportunity to evaluate the Malagasy dolichoderine lineages (Ward, Brady, Fisher & Schultz 2009). The phylogenetic study revealed two new lineages described here as Aptinoma and Ravavy. Ravavy is sister to Loweriella, within a newly defined Bothriomyrmecini, but at considerable depth within the tree, justifying its treatment as a separate genus. -

Tapinoma melanocephalum is a small ant, with average length of 1.3-1.9mm (Issg, 2016). It is bicoloured where the head and thorax is blackish brown and the abdomen and legs have a milky white colour which gives the ant its ghost-like appearance and the name melanocephalum (black headed) (Fig. 1) (Nickerson and Bloomcamp, 2003). The antennae are 12- segmented, and gradually get thicker toward the tip. The thorax lacks a spine. There are four segments on the surface of the gaster (abdomen) (Cabi, 2016). It also has big eyes and one abdominal pedicel segment (Nickerson and Bloomcamp, 2003). DISTRIBUTION. The ghost ant is an invasive species and is spread by humans, and is now widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas (Wetterer, 2009) (Fig. 2). It is present in Trinidad and Tobago as an invasive species (Wetterer, 2009). HABITAT AND ACTIVITY. Tapinoma melanocephalum occupies disturbed habitats, where they are able to survive even though more dominant species are present. Therefore, they can often be found near human settlements, demonstrating their flexibility as a species.
