, August 11, 2018 - Av 30, 5778 Rosh Chodesh Elul Parshat Re’eh (Pg. 998) The Eruv is Up this Shabbat Insights This morning's Torah reading begins with the words: "Re'eh Anochee Nosein Lifneichem HaYom Beracha U'Klala -- See I am placing before you today, a blessing and a curse" (Devarim 11:26). Although Moshe spoke to the entire nation, he addressed them with the singular verb: Re'eh. Why did Moshe use the singular form of Re'eh and not the more grammatically correct plural form of "Re'uh?” Furthermore, why call to the people to see at all; why not simply begin the Torah reading by noting that "I am placing a blessing and a curse before you?” Rav Dovid Feinstein suggests that every person has his own idea of what is a blessing and what is a curse. One man's curse could be another's blessing. When Moshe told the people "Re'eh" in the singu- lar, he meant that each individual would be given that which s/he considers a personal blessing. This, explains Rav Dovid, is why Moshe began his exposition with the word "Re'eh." Moshe told the people that they would not only be given blessings but that they would actually see and understand how they truly are blessings, (and why they are good for one individual even though others might disagree). The power of a Bracha from Hashem is realized by its ability to uplift the right person at the right time.
