KAMM PROFESSOR YOUYOUNG KANG MAY 10, 2021 Torrey ii Abstract This paper aims to study a popular musical artist’s responsibility towards the empowerment of marginalized communities in the United States through an analysis of the songs “Freedom” by Beyoncé and “Americans” by Janelle Monáe. These songs will be analyzed in conjunction with the political climate during the time of their fabrication and release as well as the political climates discussed in the songs themselves. This paper presents a thorough analysis of the lyrical and musical components of both songs as well as an analysis of a specific performance of both songs. These analyses will be presented in conversation with many scholars and authors who have studied and written about the effects of music on various social movements. Insights into these components of “Freedom” and “Americans” will exhibit many ways in which both Beyoncé and Janelle Monáe have successfully used their platforms as talented and popular musical artists to address social and political climates that oppress marginalized communities, to take action against oppression and to empower those with marginalized identities. I wanted to equip myself with further information about how musicians have used their sound to address the world around them in a socially conscious and impactful manner. It takes practice, care and an ongoing desire to learn to effectively address important, yet complex topics related to creating real social change. I wanted to learn from artists who have taken the time and energy, used their resources and power and thought critically enough about the world around them to create something beautifully personal and socially impactful. While there are many ways that social change can be implemented and music can be enjoyed, I found the intersection between music and social justice to be particularly intriguing. Growing up in the 21st century, I have lived through countless injustices occurring around me and have been consistently exposed to protest music in response to these injustices. While protest music is and has been a common response to social unrest throughout history, I wanted to study music that specifically addressed the social and political climate I have experienced from a new perspective. I wanted to learn about what artists have accomplished and what artists are still doing today in hopes to better understand my responsibility as an active member of the United States in the 21st century and as a musician. Music is a powerful tool that can be used to combat oppression. It creates change and raises awareness of past and present-day systemic problems in the United States. As we have seen time and time again, there are huge systemic inequalities that go unaddressed, which can be incredibly detrimental to those experiencing injustices in our society. Studying the ways Torrey 2 movements for social change have used music to make a difference is very enlightening because it shows what can be done to help support a movement. Actively becoming involved in the pursuit to create social change is necessary to stopping injustice. Learning about protest music has brought to light the countless ways people can get involved and avoid being complacent towards issues that matter. Music can raise awareness of movements that aim to work towards social change, can drive political protests aimed to create solidarity between those who experience injustices and to raise awareness of the harm done by those injustices. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. This we consider self-evident. Yet in discussing art of subjugated cultures, specifically African American music, these two spheres are often wrongly separated. This has cultivated a divide in which personal exploration through music has been decoupled from the artist’s greater comments on their cultural struggle. These works are necessarily grounded in the context to which they speak, however this greater context must acknowledge the experience of the individual. This essay aims to pursue a methodology centred on the relationship between the personal and the cultural, with a case study of Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly.2 Lamar straddles this divide. His personal difficulty with removal from the Compton community is inextricably linked with the struggle of African Americans in the wake of the Ferguson unrest. Lamar is in the optimal position to comment on this cultural struggle, however his fame and celebrity has partially removed him from the issues he attempts to articulate. As Lamar examines the relationship between himself and his community and context throughout To Pimp a Butterfly, he gives authenticity to his voice despite its fallibility.

Select participants responded to open-ended interview questions pertaining to their experience of loneliness as well as its impact on their lives. Moreover, participants were asked to indentify what factor or factors may have contributed to the onset or persistence of their loneliness. Phenomenological analysis of the data revealed that loneliness, as experienced by recovering alcoholics, is a recursive experience that is co-morbid with a number of debilitating affects. Therefore, the loneliness that was experienced during recovery represented just one part of a combination of painful affective experiences.

And I think it’s because of the familiarity because we all kind of know the story, right? We all kind of come in here going, “I’ve sort of got this.” If I were to tell you today that Mary was a virgin, anybody here gonna be shocked? You’ve heard that? Yeah. How about if I said that when they got to Bethlehem, there was no room in the inn? Anybody gonna be like, “Whoa, plot twist, did not see that coming?” We know the story, right? This is an incredibly familiar story, but the problem is that the more familiar we are with something, the less impressed by it we are. I mean, think about it, I remember years ago for the first time ever, I went to this website I’d heard about. It was called google. com. And I went there and I typed in something I was interested in, and I got like thousands of pages, thousands of pages of whatever it was I was looking for, and I was blown away but I was so impressed by that.
