Regulatory Burden Review - Have your say! The Government has asked CCPR to conduct a review into regulatory burdens affecting sports clubs. They are going to dig down into the red tape and bureaucratic burdens which prevent you from deliv- ering sport and generally drive you mad. They want to know about the red tape that tangles you up at your sports club. Give them your views via their short online survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RBR - everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win football tickets for v France at Wembley on November 17 or Rugby tickets to see Scotland v South Africa at Murrayfield on No- vember 20! Once they know more about the burdens affecting sports clubs (thanks to your help!) they will look to make suggestions on how they can improve the situation for voluntary sports clubs. The findings will be presented to the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, in February 2011 What else are they doing to gather evidence? Regulatory burdens is a fairly broad topic so to make sure they unpick it properly they are gathering information in all sorts of ways: • Sending out postcards to sports clubs for a straw poll response on the top three burdens, • Holding workshops to discuss different key burdens • Inviting experts to speak with them • Receiving paper submissions • Compiling case studies and visiting clubs • And, as mentioned above conducting their quick online survey which is a great place to have a good old moan about red tape - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RBR If you would like to know more about the review or have any questions, please contact Syann Cox on 020 7976 3922 ( [email protected] )

Volunteer of the Month Where would squash in Sussex be without Fiona Western?

About 6 years ago Fiona Western joined the Sussex County Committee to represent Ladies squash interests on the committee. From the moment she joined Fiona has worked tirelessly for the cause of ladies squash and racketball in the county. She has run the County Leagues and knock out competitions with passion and enthusiasm. Often frustrated by apathy and a deep concern for the decline in playing numbers Fiona has always found ways to encour- age participation and maintain interest. The state of ladies squash in the county would be the poorer but for Fiona’s efforts.

Since joining the county committee Fiona contribution to the development of squash in Sussex goes way beyond her commitment to the Ladies leagues. Fiona comes from a sporting family and for many years has represented the Dunnings Mill Club with distinction. She is now the Secretary of the Dunnings Mill Squash and Racketball club and is playing her part in helping the club with its plans to relocate to East Grinstead. Aside from her County League responsibilities Fiona has involved herself with the administration of the County junior teams and has driven hun- dreds of miles taking juniors to inter county matches all over the country. She has also made significant contribu- tions to many other aspects of Sussex squash – too many to mention. All this and a day job as well!!

Quite apart from her interests in County affairs Fiona has devoted time and energy to the development of her son Cameron’s emerging squash career. As a Nationally ranked junior great things can be expected of him in the future.

Sussex squash has a lot to thank Fiona for. She richly deserves the honour of Volunteer of the Month.

Paul Millman (Chair of Sussex SRA)

From the Dunnings side I would say Fiona is always at hand to give help in any way she can. Fiona has sponsored/ help run tournaments which were aimed at encouraging juniors to play in teams with adults. She was a key member of the team in gaining our club charter which you will be aware is heavily sided towards development of the club starting with the junior section. This also involved attending courses in child protection, equity for all etc

She has always supported other parents with transportation to and from tournaments all over the country as well as the county.

She is also very well known around the county helping out at tournaments for juniors and adults and also running the ladies section.

Having a son climbing up the junior county rankings and the national junior circuit has also helped her strive for im- provements in the junior county development plan from Club to county, county to regional level.

She is a great asset to our club, other clubs and the county.

Giles Cowdell (Dunnings Mill Squash Club)

Fiona is a star - she turns up and supports our matches if she's not playing, she reminds me to take the balls and the marking sheets and then brings spare ones just in case I forget!! She marks matches, fills in the scores and generally does everything to try and keep Dunnings and Ladies Sussex Squash going. In addition to all this, she very often cooks our team, and their other halves dinner - all above and beyond the call of duty!!!

Nicola Cowdell (Dunnings Mill Squash Club)

I think based on the fact she gave up two weekends almost back to back shows that she has great commitment to Sussex Squash and is prepared to ensure it thrives where ever possible. When this is also looked at in context with her work on the ladies league she is a credit to the county as many people would have thrown in the towel by now, but her determination has kept the ladies league/game alive.

Simon Tunley (Sussex SRA Secretary)

Sussex Squash is very close to my heart – my son Cameron has had a huge amount from County Training and playing for his County and I have met a lot of lovely people, juniors, coaches, parents and other members of the SSRA committee through my involvement. Sussex Squash has a lot to offer with an excellent County training Struc- ture and I am proud to be part of it!

Fiona Western

Congratulations and thank you Fiona!

‘Volunteers do a great job and really are the backbone of squash. Without them we wouldn’t be able to train and play like we do’. TECNIFIBRE BRITISH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Tecnifibre British Junior Championships were held in between the 28-31 Octo- ber. This prestigious event has been well established over the years as the biggest domestic junior tournament on the circuit and involves the top British players from all age categories. The National Squash Centre and The Northern Squash Club played host to 320 players for four days of fiercely competitive squash. All qualifying rounds were played at the National Squash Centre on Thursday 28 October which gave 72 players the chance to join the top players in the main draws.

Elin Harlow the Girls Under 13 number 1 seed from Wales was in unstoppable form all weekend, Harlow had not dropped a game going into the final and her opponent Amelia Henley (Kent) could not find enough to stop the trend, Harlow taking the title back to Wales with a 3-0 victory. The Boys Under 13 final was a fantastic game of squash which lasted 52 minutes and had 3 tie breakers. The number 2 seed Robbie Keefe (Hampshire) took on the top seed Harry Falconer (Lincolnshire) and with both boys evenly matched and battling hard it was impossible to call the outcome. Falconer was to be the victor, claiming his first National title with a 12-10 win in the fifth.

The Girls Under 15 final was the only final of the tournament that didn’t involve the top 2 seeds. Lily Taylor (Leicestershire) was the 3/4 seed that knocked out the number 1 seed in the semi finals with a 5 set win in 43 minutes. Taylor came up against the number 2 seed Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria) . Beecroft was too strong and clinical and didn’t give anything away, Taylor unable to get in front at any point as Beecroft ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner. The Boys Under 15 final was the complete opposite of the Girls Under 15’s as the top 2 seeds went to war. Hamish Falconer (Lincolnshire) the top seed faced James Evans (Kent) in a final that went past the hour mark. 66 minutes of squash entailed with each player taking a game at a time to send it into the fifth and final game. Ev- ans took the lead and managed to hold on to it to win his first National title, 11-8 the final game score.

The Under 17 category saw both reigning champions return to defend their crowns, Emily Whitlock () returned as top seed in the Girls Under 17’s while Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) came back as number 1 in the Boys Under 17’s. Whitlock was untouchable all weekend and pun- ished each of her opponents with clinical attacking shots. Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) was the second seed and former Under 15 Champion who was given the task to end that run. Whitlock how- ever proved to be too strong and quick around the court and retained her title with a 3-0 victory in 20 minutes. Likewise, Holland had rarely been tested in his run to the Boys Under 17 final, Matthew Sidaway () was the number 2 seed and the player with the local hopes on his shoulder and a home advantage, being part of the Manchester Squash Academy who train on the spectacular all glass court at the National Squash Centre. Sidaway could not put that advantage to good use, Holland continuing his impressive form and dominating the game. 3-0 in 40 minutes saw Holland take his title back to Nottingham for the second year running.

The Girls Under 19 final gave another Welsh player the chance to claim a title. (Wales) the number 2 seed took on Julianne Courtice (Gloucestershire) the top seed and former Under 17 British Champion. Courtice who turns 19 years of age a week after this tournament was keen to end her Junior career on a high and that she did. With the match at 2-1, Courtice came back onto court and played relentlessly, giving Evans no chance as her final game as a junior finished a perfect 11-0 and with it the prestige of winning the Don Sanderson U19 trophy. The Boys Under 19’s top two seeds faced each other as 2 nd seed (Gloucestershire) appeared in his first British Championship final against former Under 17 Champion and number 1 seed (Surrey) . Sharpes experience along with his class showed as he ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner in 36 minutes as he also adds the Don Sanderson U19 title to his collection.

Negotiated by Oaks Consultancy, the deal is worth in excess of £200,000 to the sport and sees Tecnifi- bre become the title sponsors of the British Junior Open, British Junior Closed and the English Junior Nationals.

In addition, Tecnifibre will be working closely with the ESR Regional Academies – the elite squad of players, totalling over 600 of the best juniors in the country which feeds the National Squads. Congratula- tions and thank you to Paul Lindsay (Roehampton), Lisa Pinggera (Reigate), Bob Gasston and Fiona Stephen (Oxshott) who put lots of time and effort into this for their clubs.

London & South East Regional Junior Closed Squash Championships Results

This year’s Regional Closed, held on 11th and 12th September 2010, saw almost 100 young players from Surrey, Sussex, Middlesex, and Kent battle it out over 8 events to win the Re- gional Squash Title. The event was held at Surrey Sports Park which boasts 6 glass back courts and 2 show courts with seating for 160 people. It provided an ideal setting for the cream of the London and South East junior squash world to showcase their skills. The squash was played in good spirit and the quality was high throughout all age groups. The competition created a great showcase for squash at the centre as the courts are positioned immediately as people enter the building – consequently, a steady flow of non squash play- ers stopped to watch and ask questions, and it was really pleasing to see children from local football academies taking a particular interest. Sussex-based pro player, Ollie Pett came along to show his support and help present the prizes.

Finals Results: Boys under 19 Reuben Phillips (Middlesex) Beat Michael Robinson (Surrey) 3-1

Boys Under 17 Cameron Western (Sussex) beat Stuart Allcock (Sussex) 3-0

Launch of new Sussex Racketball League

The inaugural season of the Sussex Racketball League began on Wednesday 6th October. The league includes 6 teams from across Sussex- Worthing, Brighton, two clubs in East Grinstead and two teams from Crowborough. On Wednesday the very first match of the new league saw Crowborough 1st team take on Crowborough 2nd team.

The league format is based on that used in the South East league. Each fixture comprises four singles and two doubles

The evening began with a battle of the number 1 strings - Jonny Powell of the 1st's played Bob Trew of the 2nd's. It was a good match, however the result went to form with Jonny proving just too powerful for Bob over the duration of the match. Jonny ran out the winner 3- 0. Next up were the number 3 strings - John Langworthy of the 1st's played Richard Flint of the 2nd's. These 2 opponents know each other very well, having played many times before including Club Closed finals. On this occasion John was too strong and showed great racket skills, beating Richard 3-0. The 2nd strings then took to the court when Daren Edgington of the 1st team took on John Sweet captain of the 2nd team. This was a very hard fought match with many long and skilful rallies being played. It was very close with Daren finally winning the match 2-1. Lastly the number 4 strings took to the court. Rob Watts represent- ing the first team in his first ever team match played Paul Credland of the 2nd team. Paul showed a steady head and with many strong serves and volleys beat Rob 3-0 to record the only victory of the night for the 2nd team.

At the finish of the singles matches, everyone took to the court again to play the required doubles matches. Jonny and John of the 1st team played Bob and Richard of the second team. It was a very tight match with only 4 points separating the 2 pairs at the end. Jonny and John won 2-1. In the final match of the evening Daren and Rob played Paul and John, running out comfortable winners 3-0.

So the final score including the bonus points awarded to the winning team was Crowbor- ough 1st team 19 points Crowborough 2nd team 5 points. But more importantly, the inaugu- ral season of the Sussex Racketball league is now officially launched and underway.

Mike Tonge the league organiser said "I am delighted that we have got the new league un- der way with a great match at Crowborough. Racketball is growing rapidly in Sussex and I hope next year we will have sufficient additional teams to be able to set up a second divi- sion. Many thanks to all those clubs taking part, and I look forward to more clubs joining in next year".

Funding boost for London sports facilities

London mayor Boris Johnson has announced that 13 sports schemes are to be the first to benefit from a new fund to help transform the capital's community facilities. The Playsport London Facilities Fund has been set up by the mayor as part of a bid to establish a grassroots sports legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is hoped that investment in sports schemes will also help to address a "significant shortfall" in community facilities across the capital, with many venues oversubscribed. Redbridge Sports Centre (£200,000) and the Europa Centre in Bexley (£200,000) - both confirmed as 2012 Games Time training venues - are among the recipients of funding. Haringey Council will net £250,000 towards a multiple pool redevelopment scheme, while Coolhurst Lawn Tennis and Squash Club will receive £100,000. Enfield's Queen Elizabeth II Stadium will benefit from a grant worth £250,000 towards revamped changing facilities, while Camberwell Baths has been awarded £50,000. Epping Forest, on behalf of Orion Harriers running club, has been awarded £50,000 towards a new clubhouse. Westway Sports Centre has been handed £42,000. Elsewhere, Haringey's National Centre for Autism Education (£21,327); Vale Farm Sports Centre in Brent (£16,250); and Star Park (£30,000) and Gooseley Playing Fields (£30,000) - both in Newham - also receive funding. Princes Park Youth Football Charity in Barnet (£23,500) is the remaining recipient of support through the mayor's fund. Johnson said: "We are fast approaching the final furlong in the build up to the 2012 Games and we want to harness this magnificent opportunity to improve sporting facili- ties throughout the capital and encourage many more people into sport for genera- tions to come. "By working with local organisations, we aim to get inert Londoners off their sofas and involved in a range of activity, and to achieve a true Olympic and Paralympic legacy." Kate Hoey, the mayor's commissioner for sport, added: "The facilities we are investing in will provide sporting opportunities for people who are inspired by the Games to take up sport for many years to come."

“We are delighted to hear that Coolhurst LT&SRC has secured a further capital grant, alongside our investment it will help to realise an ambitious and exciting project. Se- curing funds from The Playsport London Facilities Fund that was set-up by the mayor of London as part of a bid to establish a grassroots sports legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a real coup for the Club representing a non- Olympic sport. The volunteers at the Club who have driven the project from concept stage are a real asset to our sport and ESR are looking forward to the new develop- ment and our relationship.” Jon Carney, Facilities Investment Manager ESR

We are also very pleased that Redbridge, another big squash venue also received the funding.

Neil Desai Memorial Day The next charity squash event is a Neil Desai Memorial Day, being held at St. George’s Hill on Sun- day 21st November 2010, to raise money for Neil Desai Foundation.

The Neil Desai Charity Squash Day takes place at St George's Hill Lawn Tennis Club, Warreners Lane, Weybridge, KT13 0LL from 1pm - 5.30 pm on Sunday 21st November 2010.

There will be junior clinics from 1pm with several top pros followed by exhibition matches and "Special Squash Challenges" at 4pm involving several of the region's star players. Anyone that is interested in taking part in the clinics should contact Danny Lee on 07905 102094 or [email protected]. Children of all ages and standards are welcome. I will fit them in to a suitable session.

Squash players of all ages that want to pledge money to the charity in return for games with World Ranked Professionals should also contact Danny.

Tickets for the exhibition on the club's brand new All Glass Court are £5 payable on the day. Those who wish to attend the exhibition should arrive by 3.45pm.

All proceeds will go to the Neil Desai Foundation which amongst other worthy causes supports CRY (cardiac risk in the young) offering free testing to young sportsmen and creating awareness to pre- vent fatalities.

For those of you who didn't know him Neil Desai was a tremendously talented County squash player who tragically died on his 22nd birthday two years ago. He was also a very popular person with an infectious enthusiasm for life. He always put in 100% and was a fine ambassador for his sport.

Let's pack out St George's Hill in memory of Neil and raise a significant amount of money for the charity dedicated to his name.

Chichester v Surrey Health and Racquets PSL match report (8th October 2010)

The Premier Squash League 2010/2011 season commenced last week and Team Chichester’s first match was away to defending champions, Surrey Health and Racquets Club, Croydon.

Both teams were without key players due to either injury or taking part in the Commonwealth Games.

Team Chichester has three new signings making their debut in this first match. Firstly Lauren Briggs (World No.45), recovering from a knee injury, took on Surrey’s (World No.7). Briggs battled well throughout but lost all three very close games; a great test for her knee which augers well for the 2 remaining ties this half of the season (both at home on 16 & 23 November).

Meanwhile, Leo Au (Hong Kong) played his first match for Team Chichester against Surrey Veteran Ben Ford in what proved to be a fantastic 5-game match. Both are flamboyant players and nicks were aplenty throughout. Au’s youth and speed around the court made the difference and after 5 close games Au levelled the match 11/7, 5/11, 4/11, 11/8, 8/11.

Next on court Tim Vail played Surrey’s . Over the last couple of seasons they have played each other on numerous occasions and Waller has been gradually improving all the time. This time proved that Waller was match- sharp and Vail struggled throughout. Vail, however, found his rhythm to take the 2 nd game 9/11 but Waller soon regained control to win the next 2 games 11/6, 11/6.

2.1. to Surrey

Robbie Temple (playing up at No.1 for Chichester in the absence of Mo Azlan Iskandar who was in Delhi) took on the Italian Champion, Davide Bianchetti. They shared the first 2 games, 11/6, 6/11 and then Temple led 0/5 in the 3 rd and 3/7 in the 4 th but couldn’t convert either and Bianchetti won both 11/8, 11/8 to give the match to Surrey.

Finally the dead rubber was contested between former World No.1, Peter Nicol who gave Chichester’s 3rd new signing, Max Lee (Hong Kong), and currently World No.61, a squash master class. This was the match of the night and Lee played very well although there were too many unforced errors. Nicol was superb, which says everything about his game; he won 11/6, 11/9, 12/10 to give Surrey an overall 4.1 victory.

Next match for Team Chichester is at home to newcomers Winchester on Tuesday 16 th November at 7.30pm. Mike Phillips, Team Manager, says,” Better things are hoped for in our next match, we do not want to wait any longer for our first win of the season.”

Mike Phillips – Chichester Team Manager
