She lives in a big apartment in the suburbs of Athens. Since September 2005 she shares her apartment with her granddaughter Yvon, who has moved from Thessalonica to Athens due to her studies. In the same apartment block lives her older daugh- ter’s family. Around her apartment are pictures of her family, her daughters, her grandchildren and her husband as well as her sisters’ families. In the living room there is an impressive library, where one mostly sees history books. The apartment is always full of little treats for guests or the family and it always has a delicious cooking odor. Being her granddaughter myself and listening to her stories gave me a completely new perspective on the past of my family and life in Thessalonica. • Money, Power, Politics, and the Great Salonika Fire of 1917 Minna Rozen
Money, Power, Politics, and the Great Salonika Fire of 1917 Minna Rozen Jewish Social Studies, Volume 22, Number 2, Winter 2017, pp. 74-115 (Article) Published by Indiana University Press For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/649093 Access provided by University of Haifa (28 Feb 2017 12:12 GMT) Money, Power, Politics, and the Great Salonika Fire of 1917 Minna Rozen Abstract In August 1917, a fire broke out in a crowded quarter on the northwest side of Salonika. It eventually destroyed the historical center of the city, including the homes and property of more than 70,000 people, most of them Jews. The Greek government enacted a law for the reparceling and reconstruction of the burned-out area, which aroused anger and concern among Salonikan Jews, who understood it as a scheme to push them out of the city. The scholarly discussion of this crucial event in the history of the city and its Jewish community has revolved mainly around two main foci: the role of the fire as a much- needed opportunity to modernize the city and the question whether the rebuilding plan was a calculated scheme to Hellenize Salonika at the expense of the Jewish community. This latter debate is part of the wider discussion of the place of European Jewry in the transition from empire to nation-state. In this paper, the repercussions of the fire will be discussed from another perspective, namely, the role played by members of the local Jewish political and social elite in the aftermath of the fire.

Although, even if you are sure that you have completed your purpose in the team and you are ready to start something new, things can change, and you should follow a different path… If you prepare yourself to manage a different reality from the one that you are used of and you are ready to collaborate with your fellow students again, old and new, then you re- ceive a challenge at the same time: To be able with your friends and your team to achieve your goals and pres- ent the best results! The 26th SCHMS just occurred. We had not been prepared for this for a long period, we did not schedule at the first place to organize it in Patras. The April of 2019, just in a moment, our team decided to claim the next con- gress. The May of 2019 we started to work hard to success a remarkable result. The March of 2020 we were completely ready to present our final work, all these things we had prepared for our congress. The final moment was near and we were ready to live this three-day experience, the 15-17 of May 2020.
