CORE VALUES OF THE UIW MISSION FAITH SERVICE INNOVATION TRUTH EDUCATION 2

The University is committed to educational excellence in a context of faith in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God. It promotes life-long learning and fos- 0 ters the development of the whole person. The faculty and students support one another in the search for and the commu- 0 nication of truth . The university is open to thoughtful innovation that serves ever more effectively the spiritual and material needs of people.

The curriculum offers students an integrated program of liberal arts and profes- 9 sional studies that includes a global perspective and an emphasis on social jus- tice and community service. - The University of the Incarnate Word is a Catholic institution that welcomes to its community persons of diverse backgrounds, in the belief that their respectful interaction advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realiza- 2 tion, and the common good. 0 THE UNIVERSITY 1 The University is located on a 200-acre site, formerly the estate of noted San Antonio phil- anthropist and businessman Colonel George 0 W. Brackenridge. His villa, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, still stands on the campus.

The southern portion of the original Brackenridge estate joins the University b along Hildebrand Avenue, forming Brackenridge Park. a The headwaters of the San Antonio River begin on the campus, and have provided fas- cinating archaeological finds related to native s Americans and the Conquistadors, and to more recent attempts at settlement. The river separates the main campus from the newly developed recreation and athletic complex. k e t b a l l

ALICE P. MCDERMOTT CONVOCATION CENTER

Is there a homecourt advantage in collegiate basketball? At the University of the Incarnate Word? Let's check the 2 numbers.

The Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center opened on the UIW campus in the fall of 1989. Since that time, the 0 Cardinals have played 309 games in the building named for the late Alice McDermott, a longtime supporter of educa- tion in San Antonio and South Texas. 0 Of those 309 games, the Cardinals have won 228 (81 losses) for a successful percentage of .738. Cardinals oppo- nents over the years must decide if Incarnate Word has a homecourt advantage. 9 In terms of winning strings in the McDermott Center, they are multiple. The most significant of those began January - 17, 1998, when the Cardinals defeated St. Edward's by 85-60. That was the first of 16 straight homecourt victories, a string which ended on January 20, 1999, in a 63-62 loss to Texas Wesleyan. 2 Opponents must have known something was in the making when the building was opened in mid-November of 1989 and Incarnate Word won the first three games played there. Concordia Lutheran out of Austin was the first team to visit the facility and the Tornados dropped a 86-64 decision to UIW. 0

A focal for the University's athletic complex, the building will seat 2,000 spectators for basketball and volleyball, 1 including four rows of theater-style chair seats. There is office space for the men's and women's basketball coaches and the volleyball coach as well as work space for their complete staffs. On the west end of the Center, there are four locker rooms, a training room, and a fully-equipped weight training room. 0

The main entrance to the facility includes a permanent concession stand surrounded by trophy cases to house the multiple awards accrued by the Cardinals.

Over the years, the 27,000-foot McDermott Center has served as the practice facility for the 1999 and 2003 world b champion basketball team. Plus, San Antonio's entry in the WNBA, the Silver Stars, have con- ducted training camps here. a s k e t b a l l
