Arithmetic Equivalence and Isospectrality
ARITHMETIC EQUIVALENCE AND ISOSPECTRALITY ANDREW V.SUTHERLAND ABSTRACT. In these lecture notes we give an introduction to the theory of arithmetic equivalence, a notion originally introduced in a number theoretic setting to refer to number fields with the same zeta function. Gassmann established a direct relationship between arithmetic equivalence and a purely group theoretic notion of equivalence that has since been exploited in several other areas of mathematics, most notably in the spectral theory of Riemannian manifolds by Sunada. We will explicate these results and discuss some applications and generalizations. 1. AN INTRODUCTION TO ARITHMETIC EQUIVALENCE AND ISOSPECTRALITY Let K be a number field (a finite extension of Q), and let OK be its ring of integers (the integral closure of Z in K). The Dedekind zeta function of K is defined by the Dirichlet series X s Y s 1 ζK (s) := N(I)− = (1 N(p)− )− I OK p − ⊆ where the sum ranges over nonzero OK -ideals, the product ranges over nonzero prime ideals, and N(I) := [OK : I] is the absolute norm. For K = Q the Dedekind zeta function ζQ(s) is simply the : P s Riemann zeta function ζ(s) = n 1 n− . As with the Riemann zeta function, the Dirichlet series (and corresponding Euler product) defining≥ the Dedekind zeta function converges absolutely and uniformly to a nonzero holomorphic function on Re(s) > 1, and ζK (s) extends to a meromorphic function on C and satisfies a functional equation, as shown by Hecke [25]. The Dedekind zeta function encodes many features of the number field K: it has a simple pole at s = 1 whose residue is intimately related to several invariants of K, including its class number, and as with the Riemann zeta function, the zeros of ζK (s) are intimately related to the distribution of prime ideals in OK . -

Appendix A Group Theory This appendix is a survey of only those topics in group theory that are needed to understand the composition of symmetry transformations and its consequences for fundamental physics. It is intended to be self-contained and covers those topics that are needed to follow the main text. Although in the end this appendix became quite long, a thorough understanding of group theory is possible only by consulting the appropriate literature in addition to this appendix. In order that this book not become too lengthy, proofs of theorems were largely omitted; again I refer to other monographs. From its very title, the book by H. Georgi [211] is the most appropriate if particle physics is the primary focus of interest. The book by G. Costa and G. Fogli [102] is written in the same spirit. Both books also cover the necessary group theory for grand unification ideas. A very comprehensive but also rather dense treatment is given by [428]. Still a classic is [254]; it contains more about the treatment of dynamical symmetries in quantum mechanics. A.1 Basics A.1.1 Definitions: Algebraic Structures From the structureless notion of a set, one can successively generate more and more algebraic structures. Those that play a prominent role in physics are defined in the following. The Frattini Module and P -Automorphisms of Free Pro-P Groups

By Darren Semmen ∗ Abstract If a non-trivial subgroup A of the group of continuous automorphisms of a non- cyclic free pro-p group F has finite order, not divisible by p, then the group of fixed points FixF (A) has infinite rank. The semi-direct product F >!A is the universal p-Frattini cover of a finite group G, and so is the projective limit of a sequence of finite groups starting with G, each a canonical group extension of its predecessor by the Frattini module. Examining appearances of the trivial simple module 1 in the Frattini module’s Jordan-H¨older series arose in investigations ([FK97], [BaFr02] and [Sem02]) of modular towers. The number of these appearances prevents FixF (A) from having finite rank. For any group A of automorphisms of a group Γ, the set of fixed points FixΓ(A) := {g ∈ Γ | α(g) = g, ∀α ∈ A} of Γ under the action of A is a subgroup of Γ. Nielsen [N21] and, for the infinite rank case, Schreier [Schr27] showed that any subgroup of a free discrete group will be free. Tate (cf. [Ser02, I.§4.2, Cor. 3a]) extended this to free pro-p groups. In light of this, it is natural to ask for a free group F , what is the rank of FixF (A)? When F is a free discrete group and A is finite, Dyer and Scott [DS75] demonstrated that FixF (A) is a free factor of F , i.e. -

Math 412. Simple Groups DEFINITION: A group G is simple if its only normal subgroups are feg and G. Simple groups are rare among all groups in the same way that prime numbers are rare among all integers. The smallest non-abelian group is A5, which has order 60. THEOREM 8.25: A abelian group is simple if and only if it is finite of prime order. THEOREM: The Alternating Groups An where n ≥ 5 are simple. The simple groups are the building blocks of all groups, in a sense similar to how all integers are built from the prime numbers. One of the greatest mathematical achievements of the Twentieth Century was a classification of all the finite simple groups. These are recorded in the Atlas of Simple Groups. The mathematician who discovered the last-to-be-discovered finite simple group is right here in our own department: Professor Bob Greiss. This simple group is called the monster group because its order is so big—approximately 8 × 1053. Because we have classified all the finite simple groups, and we know how to put them together to form arbitrary groups, we essentially understand the structure of every finite group. It is difficult, in general, to tell whether a given group G is simple or not. Just like determining whether a given (large) integer is prime, there is an algorithm to check but it may take an unreasonable amount of time to run. A. WARM UP. SUMMARY OF PART II: GROUPS 1. Motivation and overview 1.1. Why study groups? The group concept is truly fundamental not only for algebra, but for mathematics in general, as groups appear in mathematical theories as diverse as number theory (e.g. the solutions of Diophantine equations often form a group), Galois theory (the solutions(=roots) of a polynomial equation may satisfy hidden symmetries which can be put together into a group), geometry (e.g. the isometries of a given geometric space or object form a group) or topology (e.g. an important tool is the fundamental group of a topological space), but also in physics (e.g. the Lorentz group which in concerned with the symmetries of space-time in relativity theory, or the “gauge” symmetry group of the famous standard model). Our task for the course is to understand whole classes of groups—mostly we will concentrate on finite groups which are already very difficult to classify. Our main examples for these shall be the cyclic groups Cn, symmetric groups Sn (on n letters), the alternating groups An and the dihedral groups Dn. The most “fundamental” of these are the symmetric groups, as every finite group can be embedded into a certain finite symmetric group (Cayley’s Theorem). We will be able to classify all groups of order 2p and p2, where p is a prime. We will also find structure results on subgroups which exist for a given such group (Cauchy’s Theorem, Sylow Theorems). Finally, abelian groups can be controlled far easier than general (i.e., possibly non-abelian) groups, and we will give a full classification for all such abelian groups, at least when they can be generated by finitely many elements. -

Chapter 25 Finite Simple Groups Chapter 25 Finite Simple Groups Historical Background Definition A group is simple if it has no nontrivial proper normal subgroup. The definition was proposed by Galois; he showed that An is simple for n ≥ 5 in 1831. It is an important step in showing that one cannot express the solutions of a quintic equation in radicals. If possible, one would factor a group G as G0 = G, find a normal subgroup G1 of maximum order to form G0/G1. Then find a maximal normal subgroup G2 of G1 and get G1/G2, and so on until we get the composition factors: G0/G1,G1/G2,...,Gn−1/Gn, with Gn = {e}. Jordan and Hölder proved that these factors are independent of the choices of the normal subgroups in the process. Jordan in 1870 found four infinite series including: Zp for a prime p, SL(n, Zp)/Z(SL(n, Zp)) except when (n, p) = (2, 2) or (2, 3). Between 1982-1905, Dickson found more infinite series; Miller and Cole showed that 5 (sporadic) groups constructed by Mathieu in 1861 are simple. Chapter 25 Finite Simple Groups In 1950s, more infinite families were found, and the classification project began. Brauer observed that the centralizer has an order 2 element is important; Feit-Thompson in 1960 confirmed the 1900 conjecture that non-Abelian simple group must have even order. From 1966-75, 19 new sporadic groups were found. Thompson developed many techniques in the N-group paper. Gorenstein presented an outline for the classification project in a lecture series at University of Chicago in 1972. -

Abstract. We present a survey of results related to Milnor’s problem on group growth. We discuss the cases of polynomial growth and exponential but not uniformly exponential growth; the main part of the article is devoted to the intermediate (between polynomial and exponential) growth case. A number of related topics (growth of manifolds, amenability, asymptotic behavior of random walks) are considered, and a number of open problems are suggested. 1. Introduction The notion of the growth of a finitely generated group was introduced by A.S. Schwarz (also spelled Schvarts and Svarc))ˇ [218] and independently by Milnor [171, 170]. Particu- lar studies of group growth and their use in various situations have appeared in the works of Krause [149], Adelson-Velskii and Shreider [1], Dixmier [67], Dye [68, 69], Arnold and Krylov [7], Kirillov [142], Avez [8], Guivarc’h [127, 128, 129], Hartley, Margulis, Tempelman and other researchers. The note of Schwarz did not attract a lot of attention in the mathe- matical community, and was essentially unknown to mathematicians both in the USSR and the West (the same happened with papers of Adelson-Velskii, Dixmier and of some other mathematicians). By contrast, the note of Milnor [170], and especially the problem raised by him in [171], initiated a lot of activity and opened new directions in group theory and areas of its applications. -

Because few people seem to be aware of quasi p-groups, we will begin with a bit of history and a definition; and then we will determine for each group of order less than 24 (and a few others) whether the group is a quasi p-group for some prime p or not. This paper is a prequel to [Hwd]. In [Hwd] we prove that (Z3 £Z3)oZ2 and Z5 o Z4 are quasi 2-groups. Those proofs now form a portion of Proposition (12.1) It should also be noted that [Hwd] may also be found in this journal. Section One: Why should we be interested in quasi p-groups? In a 1957 paper titled Coverings of algebraic curves [Abh2], Abhyankar conjectured that the algebraic fundamental group of the affine line over an algebraically closed field k of prime characteristic p is the set of quasi p-groups, where by the algebraic fundamental group of the affine line he meant the family of all Galois groups Gal(L=k(X)) as L varies over all finite normal extensions of k(X) the function field of the affine line such that no point of the line is ramified in L, and where by a quasi p-group he meant a finite group that is generated by all of its p-Sylow subgroups. -

The Classical Matrix Groups CDs 270, Spring 2010/2011 The notes provide a brief review of matrix groups. The primary goal is to motivate the lan- guage and symbols used to represent rotations (SO(2) and SO(3)) and spatial displacements (SE(2) and SE(3)). 1 Groups A group, G, is a mathematical structure with the following characteristics and properties: i. the group consists of a set of elements {gj} which can be indexed. The indices j may form a finite, countably infinite, or continous (uncountably infinite) set. ii. An associative binary group operation, denoted by 0 ∗0 , termed the group product. The product of two group elements is also a group element: ∀ gi, gj ∈ G gi ∗ gj = gk, where gk ∈ G. iii. A unique group identify element, e, with the property that: e ∗ gj = gj for all gj ∈ G. −1 iv. For every gj ∈ G, there must exist an inverse element, gj , such that −1 gj ∗ gj = e. Simple examples of groups include the integers, Z, with addition as the group operation, and the real numbers mod zero, R − {0}, with multiplication as the group operation. 1.1 The General Linear Group, GL(N) The set of all N × N invertible matrices with the group operation of matrix multiplication forms the General Linear Group of dimension N. This group is denoted by the symbol GL(N), or GL(N, K) where K is a field, such as R, C, etc. Generally, we will only consider the cases where K = R or K = C, which are respectively denoted by GL(N, R) and GL(N, C).
