Today is the first day that Abby hasn’t had to wear a coat on their walk. They walk under shady trees and stop to notice all the white flowers blooming outside the library where Abbey and her grandma go for story hour with Abby’s friends. The smell of lilies of the valley permeates the air. As they get closer to downtown, Dad picks Abby up while they cross the broken sidewalk near the post office so she does not get hurt on the rough terrain. It can be difficult for her to navigate uneven ground with her walker. Approaching the town’s music stage, Abby tugs on her dad’s sleeve; she wants to hear the musicians playing their shiny instruments. Abby points out the sign that says STOP on the busy street corner by Poppy’s Bakery. The nice women who work there always talk to Abby and let her pick out a cookie while her dad buys warm, delicious-smelling bread for Sunday dinner. Lesson one United States of America: An Exploration Factsheet for teachers Purpose of this lesson In order to develop an in-depth knowledge of the USA pupils need to understand the key geographical features of the country. In this lesson pupils will work with an atlas (and/or online maps) in order to create their own map of the USA. Vocabulary Geology the study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth. Lake a body of water surrounded by land. Latitude the distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator. Longitude the distance of a place east or west of the Greenwich meridian. Mountain a large landform that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. Mountain Range a series or chain of mountains that are close together. Prairie a large grassland. River a large stream of flowing fresh water. Topography the study of the shape of the surface features of an area. Key Features of the United States of America Political and Administrative Boundaries The USA shares borders with Canada, Mexico and maritime borders with Russia, Cuba and the Bahamas (as well as Canada and Mexico). The United States of America is a federal republic made up of 50 states. Map of USA © Wikimedia 1 The population distribution across the USA will be explored in more detail later in this module. However the exercises in this lesson introduce pupils to some of the key settlements in the USA. CRAVEN* and P VORSTER** Keywords: Namibia, phytogeography, plant endemism ABSTRACT Species richness, endemism and areas that are rich in both species and endemic species were assessed and mapped for Namibia. High species diversity corresponds with zones where species overlap. These are particularly obvious where there are altitudinal variations and in high-lying areas. The endemic flora o f Namibia is rich and diverse. An estimated 16% of the total plant species in Namibia are endemic to the country. Endemics are in a wide variety o f families and sixteen genera are endemic. Factors that increase the likelihood o f endemism are mountains, hot deserts, diversity o f substrates and microclimates. The distribution of plants endemic to Namibia was arranged in three different ways. Firstly, based on a grid count with the phytogeographic value of the species being equal, overall endemism was mapped. Secondly, range restricted plant species were mapped individually and those with congruent distribution patterns were combined. Thirdly, localities that are important for very range-restricted species were identified. The resulting maps of endemism and diversity were compared and found to correspond in many localities. When overall endemism is compared with overall diversity, rich localities may consist o f endemic species with wide ranges. The other methods identify important localities with their own distinctive complement of species. INTRODUCTION (1994). The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arbores- cent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of SANBI is partly based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbolises the commitment of SANBI to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s excep- tionally rich biodiversity for all people. Why are some species invasive? Determining the importance of species traits across three invasion stages and enemy release of southern African native plants in New Zealand by Kirsti C. Nghidinwa There are many factors that have been proposed to contribute to plant invasiveness in non- native ecosystems. Traits of invading species are one of them. It has been proposed that successful species at a certain invasion stage share particular traits, which could be used to predict the behaviour of potentially invasive plants at the respective stage. Three main stages of invasion are distinguished: introduction, naturalization, and invasion. I conducted a stage- and trait-based analysis of available data for the invasion of New Zealand by the flora of southern Africa. Using 3076 southern African native vascular plant species introduced into New Zealand, generalised linear mixed model analysis was conducted to assess association of several species traits with the three invasion stages. The results showed that plant traits were significantly associated with introduction but fewer traits were associated with naturalization or invasion, suggesting that introduction can be predicted better using plant traits. It has been also hypothesized that species may become invasive in non-native ecosystems because they are removed from the regulatory effects of coevolved natural enemies (Enemy Release hypothesis). -

A small section of the site is located in the Ubuntu Local Municipality within the Northern Cape Province. However, the majority of the site is located within the Beaufort West Local Municipality (BWLM), which is one of three local municipalities that make up the Central Karoo District Municipality (CKDM) in the Western Cape Province. The focus of Section 3 is therefore on the BWLM and CKDM. 2.0 ADMINISTRATIVE CONTEXT The majority of the Umsinde WEF site is located within the Beaufort West Local Municipality (BWLM), which is one of three local municipalities that make up the Central Karoo District Municipality (CKDM) in the Western Cape Province. A small section of the site is also located in the Ubuntu Local Municipality within the Northern Cape Province. The town of Beaufort West is the administrative seat of the CKDM and BWLM. The main settlements in the CKDM include, Beaufort West, Nelspoort, Murraysburg, Prince Albert, Leeu Gamka, Prince Albert Road, Matjiesfontein and Klaarstroom. Beaufort West: Beaufort West is the gateway to the Western Cape as well as the main service and development centre for the area. -

The Southern African Bulb Group Newsletter No. 4 Autumn 2005 The Southern African Bulb Group was initiated by a group of enthusiasts on April 4th 2004. The objective of the group is to further the understanding of the cultivation of Southern African bulbs, where `bulbs' is used in the broad sense to encompass bulb-, corm- and tuber- possessing Southern African plants, including `dicots' such as Oxalis. In the first instance the group will be run on an informal basis, with an initial subscription of £5 invited from participants. In addition a balance sheet covering the first year of operation of the group is attached.
