  • The Lost Generation How UK Post-Rock Fell in Love with the Moon, and a Bunch of Bands Nobody Listened to Defined the 1990S by Nitsuh Abebe
Pitchfork | http://pitchforkmedia.com/features/weekly/05-07-11-lost-generation.shtml 11 July 2005 The Lost Generation How UK post-rock fell in love with the moon, and a bunch of bands nobody listened to defined the 1990s by Nitsuh Abebe his decade’s indie-kid rhetoric is all about excitement, all about fun, all about fierce. TThe season’s buzz tour pairs ... with Soundsystem, scrappy globo-pop with the kind of rock disco that tries awfully hard to blow fuses. The venues they don’t hit will play host to a new wave of stylish guitar bands, playing stylish uptempo pop, decamping to stylish afterparties. Bloggers will chatter about glittery chart hits, rock kids will buy vintage metal t-shirts and act like heshers, eggheads will rave about the latest in spazzed-out noise, and everyone will keep talking about dancing, right down to the punks. Yeah, there are more exceptions than there are examples—when aren’t there, dude?—but the vibe is all there: We keep talking like we want action, like we want something explosive. The overriding vibe of the s—serene, cerebral, dreamy—was anything but explosive. Blame grunge for that one. Just a few years into the decade, and all that muddy rock attitude and fuzzy alterna-sound had bubbled up into the mainstream, flooding the scene with new kids, young kids, even (gasp!) fratboys. Big kids in flannel, freshly enamored of rock’s “aggres- sion” and “rebellion”—they were rock jocks, they tried to start mosh pits at Liz Phair shows. So where was a refined little smarty-pants indie snob to turn? Well: Why not something spacey and elegant? Why not sit comfortably home, stoned or non-stoned, dropping out into a dreamier little world of sound? It had been a few years since My Bloody Valentine released Loveless, and there were plenty of similarly floaty shoegazer bands to catch up on.

  • The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums of All Time
The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums of All Time pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9966-the-50-best-shoegaze-albums-of-all-time/ 4AD Blonde Redhead 23 2007 30 By 2007, the New York trio Blonde Redhead had been celebrated for over a decade as cerebral art-rockers, cult favorites of their lane; the upending of their tight, neurotic structures on 23 was a release of reigns. The group’s seventh (and first self-produced) album, it’s a thrilling spread that feels spontaneous and vigorous. Simone and Amedeo Pace offer a deep gravity in sprawling, warm guitars than pulse and blush, piano lines that puncture, and tinny hi-hat percussion that conveys only a mote of passing time. Singer Kazu Makino channels the glum wonderment of classic shoegaze in the title track, sighing with featherweight elegance, “23 seconds, all things we love will die/23 magic, if you can change your life,” while Amedeo Pace’s distorted vocals on “Publisher” edge ever-closer to bluesy yelps over draping, mathy guitars and subtle electronic fuzz. It’s artful in its lack of borders. –Stacey Anderson Listen: Blonde Redhead: “23” Creation Def American Medicine Shot Forth Self Living 1992 29 Medicine hail from sunny Los Angeles, not exactly a hub for shoegazers. But what makes this trio an indelible part of “the scene that celebrates itself,” across a pond and then a continent, is the roaring, fuzz-laden music of their debut, Shot Forth Self Living. The album’s resonant centerpiece, a chugging dirge cheekily named “A Short Happy Life,” features vocalist Beth Thompson crooning, “If you smile now, I just might melt” and evoking images of “honey sliding across the floor.” Beneath the tinnitus-inducing feedback, Medicine often fixate on love’s slow fade, that familiar theme of many shoegazing songs, balancing it with less likely doses of off-kilter instrumentation and effects (banjo, a ham radio, the hurdy-gurdy).

Psychedelic music was the single greatest invention of the 1960s and remained the dominant genre in the 1990s. The 1960s coined a number of psychedelic styles, and they were still the basic psychedelic styles of the 1990s: the psychedelic pop of the Doors, the psychedelic freak-out of the Red Crayola, the psychedelic trance of the Velvet Underground, and the acid jam of the Grateful Dead. Among the innovations introduced during the 1980s, dream-pop and shoegazing were still popular in the 1990s. Far from merely plagiarizing the classics, the most significant bands of the decade contributed to re-define the art of the sonic trip. Boston's Galaxie 500 (12), comprised of guitarist Dean Wareham, bassist Naomi Yang and drummer Damon Krukowski, went against the trend when they created an anti-theatrical style devoted to urban alienation. Today (? 1988 - ? 1988) was a moonlit tide of languid litanies and whispered singalongs. It was expressionism turned upside down: angst and terror, but in the form of a bloodless stupor, not a loud scream.
