“Church School” this Fall at St. John’s

Last year, Sunday school for children was held in the Youth Room with groups dividing by age and going to other rooms in our education wing for small group gatherings.

This year (at least for the Fall), Sunday school for children will be held in the worship space (nave, chancel, and sanctuary) of St. John’s.

The adult bible study and coffee hour and the periodic adult forum will continue unchanged in the fall. Only Sunday school for children will be affected by this change of venue and format.

Sunday school for children will be called “Church School” and will be led by the Rector and the parents of the childrenMarch of the parish at and St. will beJohn formatted’ ass a worship service.

Like Coffee Hour, the Adult Forum, and Adult Bible Study, Church School will take place between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services. We will begin Church School at 10:15 a.m. and conclude by 11:00 a.m. Church School will be scheduled to last no more than 45 minutes. Parents are encouraged to attend Church School with their children. It is a religious experience for the entire family. Parents of children of all ages, from infants held in arms to those soon to enter middle school are encouraged to bring your children and experience Church School for yourself. Church School is for the whole family. Church School is intentionally multi-generational.

Church School will feature spiritual songs and , lessons from the Bible (including a children’s “object lesson” on the gospel reading for each Sunday).

The songs sung at Church School will be taken from We Sing of God: A for Children. All the hymns contained in We Sing of God: A Hymnal for Children are taken from The Hymnal 1982 of the Episcopal Church. We Sing of God: A Hymnal for Children, edited by Robert N. Roth and Nancy L. Roth, consists of 108 hymns or selections of service music from The Hymnal 1982 which were chosen with children's understanding of texts and their vocal abilities in mind. This hymnal is unique among collections for children because it introduces children to texts and tunes from the church's official hymnal rather than to texts and tunes which they will soon outgrow. WONDERFUL WEDNESDAYS

*Following the Wednesday night service, the parish enjoys a meal prepared by one of eight teams. Everyone is invited. The first Sunday of the month is a birthday celebration with cake provided by our Ultreya Cursillo Group; the third Sunday of the month features a children's activity. We welcome all children each week but try to have something special for our little ones at the third Wednesday meal.

Wonderful Wednesday for August 2017

Welcome to our summer of Wednesday dinners. Please come. Dinner is served around six following the 5:30 healing service. Enjoy delicious food and delightful company for a modest five dollars. And wine! Keith Stuart continues to delight and surprise with his pairings. What a deal!

And don’t forget the children. The children of St John’s are always guests. We love our little ones and will not take their candy or their allowance!

To assist with serving or clearing, please volunteer with the scheduled host for the evening. Stuart Smith is running the kitchen and will welcome your help.

We will resume our schedule of team cooks in September.
