She scratched the ticket while in her car. Austin says her mind has been spinning, already spending her prize a million different ways in her head! DECEMBER 2007/JANUARY 2008 Robert W. Willingham of Dallas gets $22 from his wife every Tuesday and Thursday to buy Mega Millions® tickets and a soda. The third week in September was no different, except that this time, the Mega Millions Quick Pick ticket he bought had five of the six numbers selected in the September 21 drawing. Since Willingham also purchased the Megaplier®, his ticket was worth a cool $1 million! As a result of where Willingham decided to hide the ticket, the prize got even cooler—downright frosty, in fact. “The banks were closed over the weekend and we couldn’t get to the safe deposit box,” Willingham said. “So we put the ticket in a baggie and stashed it in the icebox.” On Sunday, Willingham had to go out to tend to some errands, so his wife, Vickie, got icebox duty. “I got to stay home to guard the freezer,” she said. “It was ok, though.” Willingham says he’s going to buy his wife something she wants with his winnings. “Vickie is getting a new car,” he said. “We’re going to save the rest for a house project in the future.” Willingham bought the ticket at Red Beer & Wine at 4218 W. Lovers Lane, Dallas. 8435_DecJan_GTP.indd 3 11/13/07 9:01:15 AM Dale Slape of El Paso was with his son in the Country Boy Store #1 in El Paso talking to the store clerks about their past winning experiences. Slape decided to purchase a State Fair of Texas scratch-off ticket and then went out to his car to scratch it. Slape scratched the top half, his son the bottom half. His son told Slape he had won something. Slape glanced at the ticket, and initially thought it bore a $50 prize. On closer examination, he saw it was a $50,000 winner! The father and son screamed, jumped out of the car and hugged each other, then went back inside the store to share their good news with the clerks. Slape could only describe the experience as “unbelievable!” He said he would use some of the winnings to help a friend pay for a trip to Las Vegas to see a NASCAR race. Wood iii Copyright © 2019 Kelly Clayton iv ABSTRACT FROM MIDWAY TO MAINSTAGE: DALLAS STRIPTEASE 1946-1960 Kelly Clayton, MA Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2019 Advisor: Jessica Brannon-Wranosky PhD The entertainment landscape of post-World War II Dallas, Texas included striptease in different types of venues. Travelling and local striptease acts performed at the city’s annual fair and in several nightclubs in the city. In the late 1940s, the fair featured striptease as the headlining act, and one of the city’s newspapers, the Dallas Morning News, described the dancers as the most popular attraction of the largest fair in the United States. Further, the newspaper reporting congratulated the men who ran the fair for providing Texans with these popular entertainment options. The dancers who performed at the fair also showcased their talents at area nightclubs to mixed gender audiences. Dallas welcomed striptease as an acceptable form of entertainment. However, in the early 1950s, the tone and tenor of the striptease coverage changed. The State Fair of Texas executives decried striptease as “soiled” and low-class. Dancers performed in nightclubs, but the newspaper began to report on one particular entertainer, Candy Barr, and her many tangles with law enforcement.

THE TEXAS CONFEDERATE HOME FOR MEN, 1884-1970 Amy Sue Kirchenbauer, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2011 APPROVED: Richard Lowe, Major Professor Richard McCaslin, Committee Member and Chair of the Department of History Harland Hagler, Committee Member James D. Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Kirchenbauer, Amy Sue, The Texas Confederate Home for Men, 1884-1970. Master of Arts (History), August 2011, 116 pp., bibliography, 91 titles. Founded in 1886 by a local veteran’s organization, the Texas Confederate Home for Men served thousands of veterans throughout its tenure. State-run beginning in 1891, the facility became the center of controversy multiple times, with allegations of mistreatment of residents, misappropriation of funds, and unsanitary conditions in the home. Despite these problems, for several decades the home effectively provided large numbers of needy veterans with a place where they could live out their remaining years. The home was finally closed by the state in 1965, and the buildings were demolished in 1970. The facility’s success helped to inspire Texas to introduce a veteran pension system, and brought forth a new era in the state’s willingness to take care of veterans once their wars were over. Copyright 2011 by Amy Sue Kirchenbauer ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This work would not have been completed without the guidance of Dr. Richard Lowe. He urged me frequently to move beyond the limits of what I thought myself to be capable of, and I am a better historian for it. His dedication to helping me achieve my dreams and hours spent editing my efforts will always be appreciated.

  • Grandson Stumbles Upon His Ancestors' Graves in the Pioneer Cemeteries in Downtown Dallas by Sam V
DALLAS GE:\EALO(:UCAL SOCIETY Grandson Stumbles Upon His Ancestors' Graves in the Pioneer Cemeteries in Downtown Dallas By Sam V. Akins While giving my then 13 year old grandson, Brayden Harris of Austin, Texas, a tour of historical sites in downtown Dallas, we visited the herd of bronze Texas Longhorns, the "Old Red" Court House, the Dallas Public Library, the Sixth Floor Museum and fast the Pioneer Cemeteries1 next to the convention center. My ancestor, Elder Amon McCommas, was the sixth man to bring his family to the village of Dallas in 1844. He-was the first Christian preacher, first County Justice (Judge), and President of the first County Fair, the forerunner of the present day State Fair of Texas. He also signed the deed donating land for the land where the Old Red Court House now stands. But we went to the Pioneer Cemetery to see the beautiful memorial monument to Robert E. Lee and his Confederate Generals sinfe my grandson is a civil war buff and the "other side" of his family believes they are related to Lee. After photographing him with the Lee memorial we wandered through the remainder of the stpnes, which have not been vandalized over the years. He particularly wanted to see the markers for the military veterans and heroes buried there. I visited the cemetery several times before but found no McCommas kin buried there since most are in the Cox Cemetery near White Rock Lake. Brayden literally stumbled upon a concrete stone with nothing left on the base but a War of 1812 memorial plaque and the name George H.

Texas Hill Country Trail Region State Fair Information 2019 September 27 - October 20, 2019 FAIR FACTS: The State Fair of Texas (www.BigTex.com), as one of America's largest, longest (since 1886), and most historic state fairs, provides a unique venue for the promotion of heritage tourism as an important Texas product. To this end, the Texas Heritage Trails Program rents a 400 Square Ft booth for all Trail Regions and the THC to share in greeting and educating the public, distributing travel literature and giveaways, and promoting the authentic, meaningful experience of travel in Texas. There's a lot of worthwhile background at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Fair_of_Texas. Over 24 days of the Fair, some 2.4 million visitors will attend from within and outside Texas. The THTP booth is situated in one of the most popular pavilions, the Texas Department of Agriculture's Go Texan Pavilion, where heritage tourism is naturally branded as a "made in Texas" product. Traffic through the booth is almost constant and sometimes very heavy, requiring two to three staff to work each shift. If you would like to send your brochures to the State Fair of Texas here is what you need to know: The Texas Hill Country Trail Region charges $200 for you to display your materials and an invoice can be sent to you. Contact at [email protected]. BROCHURE SHIPPING: 1. You must sign up to participate by September 20, 2019. No brochure will be accepted for display at the State Fair without an advance reservation. 2. All brochures must arrive at the proper address at the State Fair between September 16-24, 2019.

Once, a great ancient sea met the land here. The sea receded. The land became rolling tallgrass prairies — the Blackland and Grand Prairies — located between piney woods to the east and wind-blown plains to the west. Major rivers — the Red, Trinity, Brazos, Sabine and Sulphur crossed the prairies, as did belts of hardwood forests called the Eastern and Western Cross Timbers. In these verdant grasslands and scattered forests, game such as buffalo, pronghorn and bear thrived. Bands of Wichita and Caddo Indians lived here in domed grass huts, hunting game and growing corn, tobacco and melons.
