This is a complex group of diseases common in Mediterranean regions and South and South East Asia. West Bengal today is having one of the highest number of thalassemia cases and such numbers are increasing rapidly through new births due to lack of awareness in the local populace about this dreaded disorder. A camp was organized by the seminar committee to raise an awareness about the fatality of the diasease in collaboration with the Inner Wheel Club of Jodhpur Park, District 329 on 16th November, 2016. Ms. Madhumita Samanta, counsellor of Thalassemia Control Unit, Hematalogy Department, Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, spoke eloquently on “Know Thalassemia to say No Thalassemia”. The talk was followed by a Thalassemia Carrier Detection Screening Camp conducted by Dr. Paban Kumar Chaudhuri, Medical Officer, Thalessemia Control Unit, WB, Hematology Department, Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata.     6/8/2017 Sunil Gangopadhyay ­ Wikipedia Sunil Gangopadhyay From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sunil Gangopadhyay or Sunil Ganguly (Bengali: সুনীল গেЀাপাধᘃায় Shunil Gônggopaddhae), (7 September 1934 – 23 Sunil Gangopadhyay October 2012)[2] was an Indian Bengali poet and novelist based in the Indian city of Kolkata.[4] Born in Faridpur, in what is now Bangladesh, Gangopadhyay obtained his master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta. In 1953 he and a few of his friends started a Bengali poetry magazine, Krittibas. Later he wrote for many different publications. Ganguly created the Bengali fictional character Kakababu and wrote a series of novels on this character which became significant in Indian children's literature. XAVIER’S COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), KOLKATA YEAR OF REPORT : JULY 2009 TO JUNE 2010 _____________________________________________________________________________ SECTION – A PLAN OF ACTION CHALKED OUT BY THE IQAC IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR 2009 – 2010 TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT Introduction : The sesquicentenary celebrations were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya on January 22, 2009. He paid tribute to the rich heritage and long history of St. Xavier’s. He emphasized upon the inevitable relationship between education and development. He stressed on the importance of education as a crucial factor that contributes to nation building. He praised St. Xavier’s for its service to Bengal and to India and complimented it as a centre of knowledge and excellence. The Jubilee theme was “Seemar Majhe Ashim Tumi”. The inaugural function set in motion a series of programmes, both in the School and in the College. Various departments and Associations had organized a number of programmes including seminars, workshops, symposia, debates, industrial visits, cultural festivals and so on. The aim of the College is to enhance the overall institutional quality and effectiveness with emphasis on excellence in learning and teaching and to engage in creative research at the highest level. To achieve the goals, the following are identified as the major thrust areas in the year 2009‐10: • Successful completion of 150 years celebrations. • Introduction of new courses ‐ UG, PG and career oriented certificate & diploma courses. • Further expansion of space accommodating class rooms and offices in the new building.
