According to a statement on the film’s Web site, “The film heavily relies on — and attempts to bind — theories and doctrines, as well as hypotheses, from science and math, music, art, philosophy, mysticism, spirituality and intra-disciplinary possibilities, to create an engaging whole.” Thinkers such as Deepak Chopra, Fritjof Capra, Swami Vivekananda, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Michael Talbot and many others have written about the ways that consciousness and a mystical worldview can relate to the ideas of quantum mechanics. Rarely does the concept reach the medium of film, although the 2004 documentary “What the [Bleep] Do We Know?” inspired a lively debate; despite its growing popularity, “quantum mysticism” is still considered pseudoscience by many in the mainstream. India-West asked Sheth how familiar she was with the concepts presented in the film. “Not very familiar, to be honest,” she explained. “I’d seen a documentary dealing with the topics, but when Sunil called me and asked me to do the film, I said, ‘You’ll have to explain all of this’ because it’s not something in my regular daily life. But it’s fascinating, and I love that. “He gave me books to read, too, and I had to get it in me, because the ideas are central to so much and if I can’t understand it, there’s no way I can portray it.” The past few weeks have been crazy busy for Sheth, who got married over the weekend of Nov. 23 to her longtime boyfriend, Neil Mody, on a secluded island in Mexico. The couple first met as college students at NYU; Mody went on to found a content recommendation platform called nRelate, which was acquired by Ask.com last year. Sheth wore a custom gown by Jorge Vega Umana, while guests at their three-day wedding festivities included Aasif Mandvi (“The Daily Show”), Amir Arison (“Blacklist”), Sujata Thomas (CNN producer of “Fareed Zakaria GPS”) and Nazanin Boniadi (“Homeland”), serenaded by Indian American pop singer Falu Shah. “It was lovely, and exactly what we wanted,” said Sheth. “We took over a resort and it was a three-night extravaganza. It was really, really moving to see all of our favorite people in one place.” Sheth feels that “The Wisdom Tree” can have a wide appeal among intellectually curious filmgoers. “It’s a movie that anyone can get into, really. At the end of the day, a good movie is a good movie. You hope that people will embrace that,” she said. “If I’d heard of this, would I be the first person to go and buy a ticket? I don’t know! But the minute I read it I knew it was fascinating. I did a movie that I didn’t understand and I’m all the better for it.” “The Wisdom Tree” will screen at the Orinda Theatre in Orinda, Calif., Dec. 18 at 7:15 p.m. Visit TheWisdomTreeFilm.com for information. In the decades that followed, in the midst of the revolution occasioned by the emergence of Einstein’s relativity and quantum physics, a growing number of authors claimed to discover striking “par- allels” between Advaita Ved¯anta and modern physics. Such claims of convergence have continued to the present day, especially in relation to quantum physics. In this dissertation, an attempt is made to critically examine such claims by engaging a de- tailed comparative analysis of two concepts: ¯ak¯a´sa in Advaita Ved¯anta and vacuum in quantum physics.

  • 'Science and Religion' Is
Investigating the ‘Science’ in ‘Eastern Religions’: A methodological inquiry The trope of ‘science and religion’ is usually employed in western academic circles as a shorthand for the historical narratives and the philosophical analyses of the various overlaps, oppositions, and disjunctions between empirical scientific methodologies and specifically Christian doctrines of God, creation, and redemption. Over the last five decades or so, the key terms ‘science’ and ‘religion’, understood in terms of these referents, have been minutely scrutinised, and various typologies of the relations, some more amicable than the others, between these categories have been proposed. More recently, the rubric of ‘Eastern Religions’ has sometimes been added to these discussions, where this category encompasses diverse spiritual strands which have received varying degrees of scholarly attention. The engagements of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhisms with quantum physics and neurobiology have been quite extensively studied, and various interpretations of the empirical sciences have been offered also from certain Hindu Vedantic perspectives. From a historical perspective, there is a conceptual-institutional divergence between the discourses of ‘science and Christianity’ and of ‘science and eastern religions’, in that while European science and Christianity emerged from a common intellectual and institutional matrix of post- Reformation cultures, and were thus crucially shaped by their mutual borrowings and hostilities, European science is a more recent arrival in various

CHAPTER THREE NEW AGE SCIENCE 1 DaB ich erkenne, was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhalt, Schau alle Wirkenskraft und Samen und tu nicht mehr in W orten kramen J.W. von Goethe, Faust I THE QUEST FOR A UNIFIED WORLDVIEW One of the notable characteristics of New Age thinking is its high regard for modern science. This may seem surprising at first sight because New Agers also tend to distrust and reject academic rationalism; but, in fact, the contra diction is only apparent. Modern scientific developments-especially in theo retical physics-appeal to New Age concerns for two reasons. On the one hand, they are interpreted in such a way as to legitimate a spiritual worldview; but, at the same time ( and for the very same reasons) they also serve as weapons to attack the existing scientific consensus. This is possible because the "old" and the "new" science are perceived as radical opposites, if not in practice then at least in principle. Traditional science-associated with the academic estab lishment-is thoroughly condemned as materialistic and conducive to human alienation, but the New Age has discovered the new science as a potential ally against it. Following Thomas Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions2, New Age believers claim that established science reflects an outdated reductionis tic paradigm bound to be replaced by a new paradigm based on a holistic per spective. The suggestion that the evolutionary thrust of science now leads it to reject the very materialism it once helped to create is as inspiring to some peo ple as it is outrageous to others.

  • The Quantum God: an Investigation of the Image of God from Quantum Science
The Quantum God: An Investigation of the Image of God from Quantum Science By Meaghean H. Richardson A Thesis Submitted to Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies June, 2015, Halifax, Nova Scotia Copyright Meaghean H. Richardson, 2015. Approved: Dr. Anne Marie Dalton Supervisor Approved: Dr. Mary Hale Reader Approved: Dr. Magi Abdul-Masih Examiner Date: June 5, 2015 2 ABSTRACT The Quantum God: An Investigation of the Image of God from Quantum Science By Meaghean H. Richardson This thesis is an investigation of the image of God arising from understandings of quantum science and argues that it enhances ideas about God. It considers the significance of religious interpretations of quantum science and briefly examines the case of Christian theology and God’s actions in the world. The nature of quantum phenomena requires the use of imagery likened to that used in many mystical and religious traditions. Using a multivalued approach, I give equitable consideration to multiple scientific and theological interpretations to describe the God-concept presented by sources writing on the mystical implications of quantum science. The quantum demands an intellectual and academic openness, requiring the use of resources outside of science, and pushes for a holistic approach and a transition to a postmodern paradigm. Therefore, the quantum is said to be a re-enchanting force, calling for a re-evaluation of the spiritual dimension in our overall understanding of reality. 1 1 2 2 LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR Dear Human Rights Activists, On behalf of the Board of Directors of Amnesty International USA, I am honored to welcome you to the 2013 AIUSA Regional Conference. The Regionals this year come at an extremely important time, as we welcome our new Executive Director, Steven Hawkins, and embark on exciting new initiatives. Our organization has been through a period of adjustment, and I am pleased that we are on the road towards becoming a more united organization. That’s partly why the theme for this year’s Regional Conferences strikes me as particularly timely. The “Power of Us” signifies the movement as a collective whole. It reinforces the fact that regardless of our backgrounds, it takes all of “Us,” working together to maximize our impact. Throughout the changes, our human rights work has taken and will continue to take priority. For me, the re-launch of the Urgent Action Network resonates with deep personal meaning. When I was imprisoned as a young anti-apartheid activist in South Africa many years ago, the Urgent Action that Amnesty issued on my behalf helped to secure my release. In addition, we recently watched as the United States signed the Arms Trade Treaty, representing the culmination of over 20 years of dedicated work by Amnesty. These are just two examples of great human rights progress of which we as an organization can be extraordinarily proud. This weekend you will have the opportunity to learn more about these and other critical areas of AIUSA’s work as you participate in workshops, seminars, and trainings.

C HURCH OF S CIENTOLOGY I NTERNATIONAL 4 September 2012 John T. Santucci ABC Good Morning America Re: Church of Scientology Response to Vanity Fair’s October article “What Katie Didn’t Know” Dear Mr. Santucci: Thank you for your inquiry. The beliefs, practices and activities of Churches of Scientology are not defined by the romantic relationships of any individual Scientologist, celebrity or otherwise. The entire story appearing in Vanity Fair is hogwash. There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the Church to find a bride (via audition or otherwise) for any member of the Church. Never. The allegations and entire premise of the Vanity Fair article related to Mr. Miscavige, the ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, are totally unfounded and false and categorically denied. The statements and events described about the Church are denied in their entirety. Vanity Fair relied exclusively on a small group of anti‐Scientologists, a handful of self‐promoting apostates who are admitted liars and suborners of perjury, for the preposterous allegations and corroboration of the allegations. Indeed, the article fails to quote a single source who is not a vociferous anti‐Scientologist. These apostates have shamelessly exploited Tom Cruiseʹs divorce by spreading false and invented tabloid stories in hopes of promoting themselves. When asked pre‐publication about her sources, Ms. Orth said “let me assure you that I have spoken to many people, and not just the self‐published group you refer to.” Yet, all nine of her sources openly belong to the “self‐published” group. She did not interview one Scientologist.
