OPENING GAME TRENDS: In 44 previous ALCS matchups, the team winning Game 1 has gone on to win the series 27 times, or 61% of the series played…Since the introduction of the seven-game series in 1985, 15 of 28 (54%) teams winning Game 1 have gone on to win the series…In eight of the last 14 ALCS, the team losing Game 1 has gone on to win the series.

EXTRA, EXTRA: Friday’s extra-inning game marked the first extra-inning affair in the ALCS since Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS when the Tigers defeated the Yankees 6-4 in 12 innings at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 13.

FOUR FOR ALL: ’S four RBI night in Game 1 marked the third time in Royals history that a batter has driven in four or more runs in one postseason game…The last time a Royals batter drove in four runs in a postseason game was Oct. 16, 1985 when notched four RBI in Game 7 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays…The only other four-RBI game in Royals postseason history came on Oct. 14, 1980 in Game 1 of the by WILLIE MAYS AIKENS…Gordon’s eight postseason RBIs this year are the third-best for any Royals player in a single postseason behind Aikens’ 10 RBI in 1980 and ’S nine RBI in 1985.

THREE OF A KIND: ALEX GORDON’S three-, third-inning double gave him at least three RBI in consecutive postseason games following his three-RBI performance in Game 3 of the ALDS vs. the Angels…The last player to post consecutive three-RBI games in the same postseason was the Red Sox’s MIKE LOWELL, who drove in three runs apiece in Games 1 and 2 of the 2007 ALCS against the Indians.

LONG TIME GONE: LORENZO CAIN’S first-inning infield single marked the first ALCS by a Royals’ batter since singled to center field with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off of the Blue Jays’ JIM ACKER in Kansas City’s 6-2 win over the Blue Jays on Oct. 16, 1985 in Toronto…NELSON CRUZ’S second-inning single was the Orioles’ first ALCS hit since BRADY ANDERSON’S single off JOSE MESA in the bottom of the 11th in Game 6 on Oct. 15, 1997 against the Indians in Cleveland’s 1-0 win at Camden Yards.

CRUZ-ING ALONG: NELSON CRUZ’S two hits gave him multiple hits in five straight postseason games dating back to the 2012 AL Wild Card game when Cruz played for the Rangers…Cruz’s five straight games with multiple hits equals the all-time best in postseason history, which has been accomplished 10 times by 10 different players…The last player to record multiple hits in five straight postseason games was the Red Sox’s KEVIN YOUKILIS, whose final game of the streak was Game 1 of the 2007 World Series.

CRUZ-ING ALONG 2: NELSON CRUZ has at least two hits in each of his four games to start the 2014 postseason, becoming only the ninth player to open a single postseason with multiple hits in four straight games…The last player to begin a postseason with four games with multiple hits was the Yankees’ DEREK JETER in 2012 in the first four games of the ALDS vs. the Orioles…No player in history has begun a single postseason with multiple hits in five straight games.

SHORT POWER SURGE: ALCIDES ESCOBAR’S third-inning was the second-ever postseason homer by a Royals and first since FREDDIE PATEK’S home run in Game 2 of the 1978 ALCS on Oct. 4 against the Yankees in Kansas City…Escobar’s home run was the first by a Royals player in ALCS competition since PAT SHERIDAN went yard on Oct. 16, 1985 against Toronto in Game 7 of that ALCS…Escobar became the second Royals leadoff hitter to homer in the postseason following ’S home run in Game 3 of the 1978 ALCS on Oct. 6 at Yankee Stadium – part of a three-homer game for Brett.

LATE POWER: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Royals are the first ever to have three go-ahead home runs in extra innings in a single postseason…Additionally, from ESPN Stats & Info, the Royals are the first team in history to win four extra-inning games in a single postseason.

WINNING THE FIRST ONE: The Royals won Game 1 of an ALCS for the third time, following wins in the first games of the 1977 and 1980 ALCS…In 1980, the Royals swept the Yankees and advanced to the World Series…In 12 postseason series all-time, the Royals have now won Game 1 five times (1977 ALCS, 1980 ALCS, 2014 Wild Card, 2014 ALDS, 2014 ALCS).

EIGHT IN A ROW: The Royals have now won eight straight postseason games, the longest active streak among MLB teams…The eight wins in the row is tied for seventh on the all-time postseason list, with the Yankees’ two streaks of 12 straight wins from 1927- 32 and 1998-99 topping the list.

PICKING THEM UP: TOMMY HUNTER’s pickoff of ALEX GORDON in the fifth inning was the Orioles’ first in the postseason since ALAN MILLS picked off the Mariners’ KEN GRIFFEY JR. in Game 3 of the ALDS on Oct. 4, 1997…The last time the Orioles recorded a pickoff play in an LCS game was on Oct. 5, 1974 when MIKE CUELLAR picked off the Athletics’ in Game 1 of the ALCS.

PITCHING IN: The Orioles used seven in Game 1, the second time in club postseason history to feature at least seven pitchers…On Oct. 11, 2012, the Orioles used eight pitchers in a 13-inning game against the Yankees in Game 4 of the ALDS.

YOUNG ROYALS: At 21 years 179 days old, BRANDON FINNEGAN became the youngest to appear in an ALCS game since FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ of the Angels pitched in Game 5 of the 2002 ALCS at 20 years, 279 days of age…Finnegan is the youngest left-hander ever to appear in an ALCS game and the youngest left-hander to appear in any AL postseason game in history, a record he established in the AL Wild Card game on Sept. 30…The Reds DON GULLETT is the youngest postseason pitcher in LCS history, having appeared in Game 2 of the 1970 NLCS at the age of 19 years, 271 days of age.
