EXTRA, EXTRA: Friday’s extra-inning game marked the first extra-inning affair in the ALCS since Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS when the Tigers defeated the Yankees 6-4 in 12 innings at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 13. FOUR FOR ALL: ALEX GORDON’S four RBI night in Game 1 marked the third time in Royals history that a batter has driven in four or more runs in one postseason game…The last time a Royals batter drove in four runs in a postseason game was Oct. 16, 1985 when JIM SUNDBERG notched four RBI in Game 7 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays…The only other four-RBI game in Royals postseason history came on Oct. 14, 1980 in Game 1 of the World Series by WILLIE MAYS AIKENS…Gordon’s eight postseason RBIs this year are the third-best for any Royals player in a single postseason behind Aikens’ 10 RBI in 1980 and FRANK WHITE’S nine RBI in 1985. THREE OF A KIND: ALEX GORDON’S three-run, third-inning double gave him at least three RBI in consecutive postseason games following his three-RBI performance in Game 3 of the ALDS vs. the Angels…The last player to post consecutive three-RBI games in the same postseason was the Red Sox’s MIKE LOWELL, who drove in three runs apiece in Games 1 and 2 of the 2007 ALCS against the Indians. LONG TIME GONE: LORENZO CAIN’S first-inning infield single marked the first ALCS hit by a Royals’ batter since LONNIE SMITH singled to center field with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off of the Blue Jays’ JIM ACKER in Kansas City’s 6-2 win over the Blue Jays on Oct. 16, 1985 in Toronto…NELSON CRUZ’S second-inning single was the Orioles’ first ALCS hit since BRADY ANDERSON’S single off JOSE MESA in the bottom of the 11th in Game 6 on Oct. 15, 1997 against the Indians in Cleveland’s 1-0 win at Camden Yards. CRUZ-ING ALONG: NELSON CRUZ’S two hits gave him multiple hits in five straight postseason games dating back to the 2012 AL Wild Card game when Cruz played for the Rangers…Cruz’s five straight games with multiple hits equals the all-time best in postseason history, which has been accomplished 10 times by 10 different players…The last player to record multiple hits in five straight postseason games was the Red Sox’s KEVIN YOUKILIS, whose final game of the streak was Game 1 of the 2007 World Series. CRUZ-ING ALONG 2: NELSON CRUZ has at least two hits in each of his four games to start the 2014 postseason, becoming only the ninth player to open a single postseason with multiple hits in four straight games…The last player to begin a postseason with four games with multiple hits was the Yankees’ DEREK JETER in 2012 in the first four games of the ALDS vs. the Orioles…No player in history has begun a single postseason with multiple hits in five straight games. SHORT POWER SURGE: ALCIDES ESCOBAR’S third-inning home run was the second-ever postseason homer by a Royals shortstop and first since FREDDIE PATEK’S home run in Game 2 of the 1978 ALCS on Oct. 4 against the Yankees in Kansas City…Escobar’s home run was the first by a Royals player in ALCS competition since PAT SHERIDAN went yard on Oct. 16, 1985 against Toronto in Game 7 of that ALCS…Escobar became the second Royals leadoff hitter to homer in the postseason following GEORGE BRETT’S home run in Game 3 of the 1978 ALCS on Oct. 6 at Yankee Stadium – part of a three-homer game for Brett. LATE POWER: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Royals are the first ever to have three go-ahead home runs in extra innings in a single postseason…Additionally, from ESPN Stats & Info, the Royals are the first team in history to win four extra-inning games in a single postseason. WINNING THE FIRST ONE: The Royals won Game 1 of an ALCS for the third time, following wins in the first games of the 1977 and 1980 ALCS…In 1980, the Royals swept the Yankees and advanced to the World Series…In 12 postseason series all-time, the Royals have now won Game 1 five times (1977 ALCS, 1980 ALCS, 2014 Wild Card, 2014 ALDS, 2014 ALCS). EIGHT IN A ROW: The Royals have now won eight straight postseason games, the longest active streak among MLB teams…The eight wins in the row is tied for seventh on the all-time postseason list, with the Yankees’ two streaks of 12 straight wins from 1927- 32 and 1998-99 topping the list. PICKING THEM UP: TOMMY HUNTER’s pickoff of ALEX GORDON in the fifth inning was the Orioles’ first in the postseason since ALAN MILLS picked off the Mariners’ KEN GRIFFEY JR. in Game 3 of the ALDS on Oct. 4, 1997…The last time the Orioles recorded a pickoff play in an LCS game was on Oct. 5, 1974 when MIKE CUELLAR picked off the Athletics’ BERT CAMPANERIS in Game 1 of the ALCS. PITCHING IN: The Orioles used seven pitchers in Game 1, the second time in club postseason history to feature at least seven pitchers…On Oct. 11, 2012, the Orioles used eight pitchers in a 13-inning game against the Yankees in Game 4 of the ALDS. LOUIS -- The Reds have every reason to take a moment and savor the flavor of a rare series win at Busch Stadium. Sunday's 8- 0 victory over the Cardinals not only gave Cincinnati two of three games, but also just its fourth series win out of the last 29 at St. Louis since 2006. It was July 27-29, 2015, when the Reds last came to town and took a series from the Cardinals. Sunday's win was powered by Adam Duvall's 3-for-4, two-RBI game while starting pitcher Scott Feldman cruised with six-plus scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one walk and collecting six strikeouts for his first win with the Reds. More > "It's not facing demons and ghosts of series in years past. Our team is better than it's been in the last few years, with a lot of new guys that just want to come in and play baseball, play hard and play well," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We pitched two shutouts here. Not only is that unlikely, but to come in here and be able to do and extract two wins is a big deal for us in the early start of a season." • Estimated Age Effects in Baseball
ESTIMATED AGE EFFECTS IN BASEBALL By Ray C. Fair October 2005 Revised March 2007 COWLES FOUNDATION DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 1536 COWLES FOUNDATION FOR RESEARCH IN ECONOMICS YALE UNIVERSITY Box 208281 New Haven, Connecticut 06520-8281 http://cowles.econ.yale.edu/ Estimated Age Effects in Baseball Ray C. Fair¤ Revised March 2007 Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear xed- effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more full-time years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and eld, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on. The estimates from the xed-effects regressions can also be used to rank players. This ranking differs from the ranking using lifetime averages because it adjusts for the different ages at which players played. It is in effect an age-adjusted ranking.
