If you ask any of his regulars they’ll tell you—Deepthi is the real deal. One of the interesting things about Pelenage is that he is just as international as his menu. Growing up in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, Morinville's Bistro Pelenage spent his childhood experiencing life on a hot, tropical island in South Asia. The country was popular with European tourists at that time, but by the di Madre Piccola 1980s things changed. For two years he worked hard and sent money back home. In 2013, however, he was faced with some bad news; Don’s Bistro was closing down. Because of stipulations in his work visa, Pelenage said this presented him with only two options: leave Canada or start a restaurant in the same location as where he was working before. Obviously, he chose the latter. Pelenage, along with his brother, Pamitha (who was also living in the area) put together everything they had to start a new restaurant. Friends and family chipped in whatever they could. People from the many countries he had lived in and worked in collectively sent contributions to make Pelenage’s dream come true. “People sent $1,000 here or $2,000 there,” he explained, “I thought, this is a huge challenge, but let’s do it.” That is how Bistro di Madre Piccola was born. And now, three years later, Pelenage is a permanent resident of Canada. His family—his wife and three children—are also here and they work hard every day in their restaurant. When Pelenage talks about his new hometown he says, “[people from Morinville in particular] are so good to us. Of all the places we’ve been, here is where I feel like people care for us and talk about us the most.” There are challenges, though. “It’s hard to get the word out of what we have available [in the restaurant],” noted Pelenage, describing the effort he and his staff go to make the Bistro work. “We make every single thing from scratch,” he said, from sauces and glazes to desserts, and main courses. Bistro di Madre Piccola is open for buffet brunch on Sundays and has lunch specials throughout the week. They have a kid’s menu and will even accommodate special requests and catering. Pelenage said the menu has a flair for Italian food because of his brother-in- law, Gayan Ediriweera, one of the restaurant’s chef’s, who cooked in Italy for years. Ediriweera brought his skills for the cuisine with him to Canada and even speaks fluent Italian to the delight of some of their customers. Another familiar face at the Bistro is Jana Samaraweera, a childhood friend of Pelenage from Sri Lanka, who by coincidence reconnected with him in Town. Though it is a struggle to fill the restaurant at times, Pelenage is slowly building a solid base of loyal customers. “We stumbled upon the Bistro when driving up and down the main road on a mission to find a good non-fast food place to dine and relax,” said Karen Murrin, one of the Bistro’s regular customers and biggest fans. “We were pleasantly surprised to find the menu and atmosphere were far beyond our expectations for a small-town restaurant." Murrin joked that she would like to build an apartment over top of the Bistro if she could. She and her partner, Harold Fischer, have developed such a soft spot for the restaurant they’ve made it their mission to let people know about this culinary gem in Morinville. “This little dining oasis run by salt-of-the-earth people is a rare thing to find these days, and a thing to be proud of.”

Justin Trudeau named nine new senators on Thursday. It’s said he’ll name 12 more within days. Live in Ontario or Quebec? Check the mail. You may already be a winner! This is especially likely if you’re one of 2,700 people who applied for a seat in Parliament’s plush red upper chamber. This is the first time applications have been accepted. Well, the first time there’s been a formal process. It’s not as though Canadians in decades past were strictly forbidden from asking for a seat in the great beyond. It’s just that their method used to be looser and more improvised, often over an umpteenth round of libations at the National Press Club or in a corner booth at Hy’s. The latest nine seem a worthy bunch. Party bagmen and famous broadcasters are conspicuously under-represented among their number. One new senator, Winnipeg psychiatrist Harvey Chochinov, is particularly hard to square with the notion that a Liberal-designed process will pick conspicuously Liberal senators. His previous government appointment, to a panel examining options for physician-assisted dying, came from Stephen Harper’s Conservative government. Chochinov had argued earlier that the legislated ban on assisted suicide should remain in place. The background of these senators is less important than their number because they bring the Senate closer to the day when senators with no Let’s be clear here: here was a triumph of the party line, handed down formal allegiance to a party will form a plurality in the red chamber. HGEspresso.ca Sturgeon County signs on to Rec Centre project by Tristan Turner Morinville News Correspondent Open House

Sturgeon County is throwing their hat in with the Town of Morinville to develop a business case for Morinville’s major new recreation centre project, following a unanimous Oct. 26 vote from Sturgeon County Council Sturgeon School Division is thrilled to be building a to develop a business case for the regional recreation centre together. new grades 5 – 9 public school in the Town of This decision came after a request from Morinville’s Council to their county counterparts to develop the business case together to create more leverage Morinville that will include English and French in requesting funding/grant opportunities from the federal and provincial Immersion programming. The Town will also seek funding through the County’s Capital the location, planning and design, and community Agricultural/Recreational Facility Development Grant (CARF) program and consultation! has requested that the County work with the Town on the second phase of the project going forward. This joint business case will increase the focus on the project being a regional recreation centre, but the scope of future collaboration on this recreation centre remains unclear. The rec centre project is moving ahead in two stages, the first being a smaller project to replace the current aging arena and install common areas and a running track. The County is only involved in this stage in that they contributed to servicing costs as part of an agreement with the Town on jointly servicing the Town and County’s neighbouring properties, the latter of which will house County-owned buildings. The second and much larger stage, involving a second sheet of ice, a large aquatic centre, a field house a curling rink and more common space, may now go forward as a regional project between the County and the Town. Many future details about the potential for direct capital and operational funding from the county are unclear at this stage; however, despite the recent Regional Recreation Needs Assesment Survey commissioned by Morinville that noted significant demand for more recreation space both in town and throughout the county. Currently, there is a rocky relationship in cooperative funding for services offered in Morinville between the Town and County, with Morinville’s Council previously encouraging the County to contribute far more than their $3,000 annual allowance to the Morinville Library. Despite this, Morinville’s Council seems to remain optimistic about a future of greater county involvement, with a round of warm comments directed from Morinville’s Council to their county counterparts following the announcement at Morinville Council’s Oct. 26 meeting. Regardless of the County’s role going forward, Morinville will break ground on construction of the first phase of the development in early 2017.

Singer/songwriter Lisa Brokop has been performing for more than 20 years, much of that her original material. This weekend she brings Lisa Brokop performs at the the songs of music legend to the stage of the Morinville Morinville Community Cultural Community Cultural Centre. Tickets are still available for the Nov. 5 Centre during September’s dinner and show at $50 for adults and $40 for seniors and students. concert series launch event. They can be purchased at the cultural centre during business hours. - Morinville News File Photo After cutting several albums and winning several awards, Brokop decided it was the time in her career to do something different from the contemporary/commercial part of the music biz. “I wanted to go back to my roots—sing the songs that were influential to me when I was getting started, and sing the songs that I love,” Brokop said. Those songs included those of Patsy Cline, a woman who was one of the most successful performers of the 20th century, but whose career was cut short when she was killed in a plane crash at the age of 30. It is her legacy as one of the great vocalists that appealed to Brokop. “She had a way of presenting a song with such raw emotion,” Brokop said. “She can make you believe that the lyric she is singing is really happening. I think people are drawn to real things. She said it like it was and she invited you into her heart.” Though the show is called The Patsy Cline Project, Brokop said the upcoming Morinville show is a mixed performance. “I will be doing several of the Patsy classics as well as a few that I wrote specifically for the project,” she said. “I will also do a few songs from my past repertoire of recordings that hopefully some will recognize.” Brokop said she feels honoured to perform Cline’s music. “I love this music, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to present The Patsy Cline Project.” Doors open Friday night at 6 p.m. for cocktails. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. The show is sponsored by 840CFCW and Servus Credit Union.

MorinvilleNews.com November 02, 2016 | Page 13 Morinville Public School students get musical by Stephen Dafoe stephen@morinvillenewscom

Morinville Public School Grade 1 students have been learning about music, how music is recorded, and trying their hands at playing a variety of musical instruments. The school has sent five classes to Smith Music over the past two weeks as part of the school’s field trip program. The last of the trips took place Oct. 27 and students had a chance to sing a couple of songs, have them recorded and played back with special effects, so it sounded like a choir of monsters. But the lesson did not stop there. Students took to the school’s stage to play piano, percussion, and stringed instruments, rotating through four stations, so every student had an opportunity to try each of the types. MPS Grade 1 teacher Braelan Keeler said she believed the field trips were important to students. “We’re having a great time exploring our community and the different activities we have in our community,” Keeler said. “We find that Grade 1s don’t have a lot of knowledge about the groups they can belong to in this area, so we like to expand their knowledge of areas they can build on, areas of interest. They sometimes don’t know there is a place they can be musical and explore different instruments and get their hands on different instruments. For owner Paul Smith, the classroom visits to his business are another opportunity to share his love of music. “We’re really excited to have students come in and play music instruments and have the experience with their classmates,” Smith said. “We want to be part of Grade 1 students from Morinville Public School have been learning about music and how to make it at Smith a community that lets kids play hockey and soccer Music over the past two weeks. The last of five classes had a field trip to the 100 Street Music School and and music and karate, all those things so we [the recording studio on Thursday. community] can help children find the thing in life they are passionate about.” - Stephen Dafoe Photo
