Episode One Episode Two Episode Three Canvas Roots 7:30PM Ecosense for Living Repeat of 02/01/2021 Grizzlies, Wolves, & The Endangered Species Act 07:30PM We asked the people of Montana and Wyoming about their relationship with wolves and grizzly bears and the answer was, "It's Complicated." In the politics of strange bedfellows, sometimes hunters, landowners, native tribes, and environmentalists find themselves on the same side of advocacy. However, there are big questions about the best way to live with apex predators, especially when they've been absent from much of the landscape for decades. Should grizzly bear continue to be protected under the Endangered Species Act? How many bear are the ideal number? Should they be hunted as a management tool, or are there better ways to prevent human/bear conflict? Can large predators be allowed to migrate and populate naturally, or have humans claimed too much territory to allow that? EcoSense meets with farmers, hunters, native Americans, and organizations like Greater Yellowstone Coalition where voices with varying opinions find "common ground," and sometimes put aside their different perspectives for the greater conservation good.

Young trumpeter Clifford Brown achieves great artistry, but his life is cut short in a car accident. Vocalist Sarah Vaughan forever sets a standard for jazz singing. Amidst the school integration crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas, Louis Armstrong risks his career by speaking out forcefully against segregation. Drummer Art Blakey, pianist Horace Silver and other "hard bop" musicians play a soulful brand of jazz in an attempt to bring the music back to the black audience it has lost to R&B. In 1957, Billie Holiday reunites with Lester Young on a live television program, "The Sound of Jazz"; two years later, both Holiday and Young are dead. John Coltrane, after playing on Miles Davis' Kind of Blue , forms his own quartet, scores a hit with his version of the show tune "My Favorite Things" and creates some of the most intense music in jazz history. The episode concludes with the arrival on the scene of the free-jazz pioneer, Ornette Coleman, whose music challenges all of the conventions of jazz, signals the arrival of the avant garde and provokes a debate about the definition of jazz that continues to this day. 9:00PM Jazz - A Masterpiece By Midnight (1961-Present) In the 1960s, jazz becomes divided into "schools" -- Dixieland, swing, bop, hard bop, cool, modal, free, avant-garde. The question of what is jazz and what isn't rages, dividing audiences, dividing musicians, dividing generations. For many, the real question is whether jazz, the most American of art forms, will survive at all. Rock 'n' roll groups dominate record sales and radio, and many jazz musicians, like Dexter Gordon, are forced to leave America in search of work. Many artists use the music as a form of social protest: Max Roach composes the "Freedom Now Suite"; Charles Mingus makes his mark with overtly political recordings. John Coltrane records prolifically and appeals to broad audiences before his untimely death at age 40. Saxophonist Stan Getz helps boost a craze for bossa nova music. Great singers celebrate the essential contribution of vocalists to the development of jazz. The avant-garde movement creates innovative music but appeals to an increasingly limited audience. By the late l960s, jazz is struggling to find its way. In the early l970s, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington pass away. Miles Davis, after forming his most innovative acoustic jazz group, leads a movement of jazz musicians who incorporate elements of rock and soul into their music in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience. "Fusion" wins listeners, but alienates some dedicated jazz fans. By the mid-80s, jazz begins to bounce back; it's heard in concert halls, on rap records, in film scores and in television commercials. Jazz musicians continue to practice, perform, record, disagree, improvise and jam. As it approaches its centennial, jazz is still alive -- and still changing. (Next Air 03/12/2021 01:00AM)

On October 27th, 1948, the residents of Donora, PA, awoke to a thick blanket of yellow smog. That was not unusual for this mill town, but this time, the stinging air didn't lift. It burned people's eyes and throats and darkened the valley for five straight days. Before it dissipated, 20 people had died from the toxic air. Many more would have life-long repercussions. Dr. Devra Davis, environmental health expert, Donora native, and author of When Smoke Ran Like Water, https: //www.basicbooks. com/titles/devra- davis/when-smoke-ran-like-water/9780465015221/ tells us how Donora slowly awakened America's need for the Clean Air Act, and why we need it just as much today. In segment two, we join Mom's Clean Air Force to meet mothers concerned about the effects of two different sources of air pollution. In Pennsylvania, parents educate themselves and guard their children's health against chemicals associated with fracking. In Orlando, we meet a mom engineer/artist who uses her paintings as one tool to express her concern about a nearby power plant. What can we do? As individuals, our transportation choices make a big impact. Don Anair of the Union of Concerned Scientists talks electric cars, evolving attitudes about carpools and rideshares, and whether or not car ownership is worth the price of admission. Will the world find enough creative options to our 1 person/1 car/1 planet challenge?

Orlando, Florida hosts more visitors that any place on the planet, around 72 million guests each year. In spite of that challenge, or maybe because of it, the mayor's office has made some impressive and progressive strides in sustainability. They've found creative ways to keep trash out of landfills including restaurant and residential composting, and a simple, easy-to-understand recycling program. Beyond that, they're recycling the compost into soil amendments and biofuels to close the circle. In this episode of EcoSense, we explore creative ways that people and organizations are upcycling, reducing, or transforming trash, from food to packaging to clothing. We ferret out the most creative solutions out there that revolutionize our thinking and our habits around trash - from upcycling excess material into beautiful products that employ refugees to rebuilding oyster beds.

And as the biblical story goes, "rocks and fire falling from the sky" buried Sodom and Gomorrah and the sea became "the sea of salt" -- The Dead Sea. Now this wonder of the world is dying. Since 1976, its level has declined by more than sixty-five feet. Its coastline is pockmarked with thousands of sinkholes. Can the Dead Sea be saved? After more than a decade of research and debate, scientists, engineers and political leaders have come up with a daring plan, one that could not only save the sea but help bring stability to a region rife with conflict. NOVA follows this unprecedented endeavor - perhaps the world's largest water chemistry experiment ever - as scientists and engineers race to save the Dead Sea and help bring water to one of the driest regions on Earth. Entire sections of lush forest had been torched, cut down and cleared away for timber, agriculture, and oil. The sight brought him to tears: one of the world's last great ecosystems was disappearing before his eyes. At that moment Ivan decided to act. "If not me, then who?" he asked himself. Nature and Culture International was born of that question. "If not me, then who?" It was created from one man's determination to make a difference for the planet. But the organization grew and succeeded from another of Ivan's insights: local and indigenous people are key to conservation success. Conservation must come from and support the local people who depend on these forests and the resources they provide. Twenty years later, Nature and Culture has protected more than 15 million acres of tropical forests and biodiverse ecosystems in South America and Mexico. These forests conserve countless plant and animal species. They provide clean drinking water for millions of people. They preserve the home and cultural traditions of indigenous peoples. And they help mitigate climate change. The Amazon alone stores and sequesters more carbon than any other ecosystem in the world. (Next Air 03/27/2021 04:30PM)
