Finally, I dedicate this journey to Rima, my companion and wife and to my two daughters, Mireille and Maureen, for the understanding, patience and support throughout this long journey. i Abstract This research examines the identity perception of Maronite adolescents in Israel as part of the Israeli Palestinian Arab Christian community. The research was carried out between the years 2009-2011, involving 25 Maronite adolescents ranging from ages 16 – 18 years. Views on identity were also sought from the parents of this group. The research looks at the implications of their identity perception on their future orientation, career, place of residence, culture and heritage amidst the ongoing unstable social and political situation in the region. The research is inductive in nature and follows a non-positivist, qualitative, ethnographic approach, seeking depth in capturing and presenting the elusive nature of the “soft data” of the self-identity construct. The data were gathered and triangulated by a variety of methods: adolescents’ in-depth interview, parents’ semi–structured ethnographic interview, narrative text tools and a focus group. Findings revealed that the two leading components in the identity perception of the participants were the “Israeli Arab” national component, and the “Christian” religious component. Findings also indicated that the identity perception influences the choice of the participants’ careers; choosing from what was offered to them, rather than pursuing what they liked, and their place of residence having to deal with the limitations imposed on minorities regarding where they can, or cannot live. The participants expressed their need for leadership, religious or secular, to strengthen their involvement in the social and political agendas, educate the younger generation about their identity and heritage, offer a supportive and empowering framework for their ambitions and future plans and improve their socio-political presence among the other communities. The outcomes of this research contribute to a better understanding of the identity perception among Maronite adolescents and constitute a basis for understanding how they can be better supported as a minority group within a multi-cultural society in an unstable region. With progress and modernization, the Islamic movements in the Middle East realized that they could not deny progress, so they decided to join the mainstream and take advantage of technological progress in their favor. The movement maintains at least one website in which it publishes its way, and guides the audience. Although these movements seem to maintain a rigid ideology, they adapt themselves to reality with the help of many tools, because they have realized that reality is stronger than they are.     Israel Studies: An Anthology - Religion in Israel Religion in Israel By Ilan Fuchs (November 2010) Introduction The relationship between Israel and religion is far from simple. There are several fundamental issues that make this relationship different from most Western countries: ● Israel is home to many and diverse religious groups. While Judaism is the main religion, the Israeli legal system promises support to all religious groups. ● Tension exists between the secular and religious communities. ● The state grants religious law authority in matters of family law. The role of religion in Israel may be studied from a range of disciplines, including sociology, history and law. In this chapter, we will offer a broad survey of the topic and try to give a little bit of everything to offer a basic introduction to this topic. Since Judaism is the biggest religious group and Israel defines it self as a Jewish state, I will focus on Judaism. Beginning with an historical background, I will not mention numbers and percentages since the published reports are conflicting and the definitions used are inordinately vague. Zionism on Religion The relationship between Zionism and religion is at the heart of the historical process that led to the establishment of Israel. Zionism emerged when the Jewish world in Europe was on the brink of modernity. Jews in the early modern period were a religious community that was the ultimate outsider for Christian Europe.[1] The process of emancipation and the rise of the modern concept of nationalism had a direct effect on Jews.[2] Jews were faced with choices to join other national movements and maintain Jewish identity as a purely religious one; or they could define themselves as Jewish in a modern national sense and minimize the religious component.

    Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power, 9: 445–470, 2002 Copyright © 2002 Taylor & Francis 1070-289X/02 $12.00 +.00 DOI: 10.1080/10702890290091615 THE ISLAMIC SOCCER LEAGUE IN ISRAEL: SETTING MORAL BOUNDARIES BY TAMING THE WILD Tamir Sorek Department of Sociology and Anthropology Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel This article strives to use the institutional and discursive strategies employed by the Islamic Movement in Israel in the soccer sphere to illustrate wider theoretical argu- ments about setting boundaries of inclusion and exclusion in the public sphere. The Islamic Movement uses an isolationist strategy, by creating the independent Islamic Soccer League. In contrast, social agents who strive to promote integration in Israeli society or, alternatively, Arab-Palestinian national pride encourage the involvement of Arab teams and players in the Israeli Football Association. The article argues that the isolationist strategy is inherent in the attempts of a religious movement to articulate a definition of collective identity that is based on a sacred moral code. Then, relying mainly on the contents of the sports sections of the Islamic press, the article analyzes the inevitable tensions stemming from the use of an institution with a strong secular orientation for the purpose of reproducing religious identity. Key Words: minorities, religion, Islam, sports, Israel Since 1986 the Islamic movement in Israel has been running its own independent soccer league. This league, separate from the Israeli Football Association, defies the general tendency of the Arab soccer players and fans in Israel to use soccer as a channel for integration. This article strives to use the institutional and discursive strategies employed by the Islamic Movement in the soccer sphere in order to illustrate wider theoretical arguments about the modes of setting boundaries for inclusion and exclusion by a religious organization and national minority in the public sphere, in conditions of competition between differing optional codes of identity.

This process has been characterized by the qadis’ attempts to strengthen the position of the Shari‘ah Appeals Court. In some fields the qadis’ activism has been more successful than in others. Recently however, it seems that the Shari‘ah system is undergoing a crisis. The author will analyze the actions of the Shari‘ah Appeals Court on several parallel levels: (1) the strengthening of its position compared with those of the civil courts and the regional Shari‘ah Courts; and (2) a symbolic strengthening of its position in relation to (i) Israeli Law; (ii) the litigants and their attorneys; and (iii) the Muslim public. The author will then analyze the current crisis of the Shari‘ah system and the need for reform. The author will focus upon the internal dynamics of the Shari‘ah Court of Appeals, the interaction of its different actors, and suggest reforms to be made that will strengthen the legitimacy of its position in relation to the State of Israel and with the Muslim populous.

Today, the latest Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics reports indicate that Arab citizens of Israel make up 20 percent of the Israeli population. Israel’s total population is 7.5 million, with the Arabs constituting of 1.5 million of this figure.1 Geographically, Galilee is the hub of Arabs in Israel. Although their population is dispersed throughout the country, the majority of Arabs in Israel live in the cities, towns and villages of the Galilee such as Nazareth, Haifa, and Umm al-Fahm. With having the highest population growth rate in Israel, Arabs are seen as a growing strategic threat to the Jewish character of the State of Israel by many.2 The Arab demographic growth has become a source of fear for some Israeli strategic planners and has provided fuel for conspiracy theories. However, International Crisis Group states that Arab citizens of Israel are largely cut off from the geographical, cultural, economic and political mainstream.3 The problems the Arabs face can be considered a threat to Israeli democracy.

A modified questionnaire of Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) is used to measure factors on motivation and attitudes toward Arabic Language learning and their effects on achievement of students. These five factors are as follows: 1) Integrativeness, 2) Attitude toward the Learning Situation, 3) Motivation, 4) Language Anxiety, and 5) Instrumentality. The instrument (AMTB) represented in 74 items is administered to 50 postgraduate students who were doing M.A. in Arabic. Students' examinations scores (overall grade) for two semesters are used as a measurement of their achievement in Arabic.

    THE INTIMATE INTERTWINING OF BUSINESS, RELIGION AND DIALOGUE by Leonard Swidler 1. Religion Is at the Core of Every Civilization Since the beginning of civilization religion has been at its very heart. A creative religion promotes a creative civilization; a fragmented religion results in a fragmented civilization. This is just as true now at the edge of the third millennium as it was six thousand years ago at the dawn of the first civilization at Sumer in the Fertile Crescent. First a few words recalling how the term religion is understood here: "Religion is an explanation of the ultimate meaning of life, and how to live accordingly, based on some notion of the Transcendent." Normally all religions contain the four "C's": Creed, Code, Cult, and Community- structure. When the "explanation" is not based on some idea of the Transcendent it is usually called an ideology and functions in individuals' and groups' lives like religions.(1) 2. Economic Activity and Religion To sustain life, humans had to gather and produce the fundamental necessities; as life became more fully human, men and women banded together to make their efforts more efficient through differentiation of labor. Eventually this human coalescing became so layered that it produced cities (whence the name civi-lization, from the Latin civis, the stem for the English cognate "city"), built on the now increasingly complex human work, economic activity. If human work, economic activity, is at the foundation of the development of civilization, the broadest context within which this foundation is understood, explained and significantly shaped is the religion of the civilization.
