2019 Annual Report to Donors 1 The Field Museum fuels a journey of discovery across time to enable

Dear Friends, solutions for a brighter future rich in Thank you for making 2019 so memorable at the Field Museum. We are pleased to present this Annual Report chronicling our accomplishments—each fueled by your continuing investment in science and learning. nature and culture. (pg. 2) In the following pages, you will find remarkable stories of the Field’s work: a 42-year longitudinal study connecting shrinking body sizes of migratory with ; discoveries of new species within our collections; and innovative personalized learning experiences for Public Schools students, and much more. Research at the Field Museum will be expressed in new ways. The Negaunee Integrative Research Center—recently named to honor the Negaunee Foundation’s generous support over many years— Its global impact—through research, established an all new research focus on the environmental and biological issues behind the alarming decline in pollinator populations worldwide. In addition, the Grainger Bioinformatics Center was created, thanks to a 10-year pilot program funded by The Grainger Foundation. Field scholars will use a variety of novel big-data analysis techniques conservation action, learning programs, to study Museum collections and unlock hidden patterns in nature. The Museum will also award an annual international bioinformatics prize to encourage the application of these new research techniques to some of the most pressing biological and environmental challenges of our time. The Keller Science Action Center celebrated 25 years of conservation programs that have effected and exhibitions—is anchored by a change in collaboration with communities in Chicagoland and around the world. What started as a department of two, is now an interdisciplinary team of 35 scientists and educators whose work is addressing urgent environmental challenges. Your philanthropy bestows a unique responsibility on us—to be guardians and stewards of this priceless collection of 40 million iconic institution. We accept this charge with gratitude.

Field Museum’s 40 million artifacts and Migratory specimens drive discovery behind the scenes every day. Whether billions of years old or recently collected, Museum Birds are specimens help scientists build a complete picture of and change. Every day since 1978, Museum scientists and Shrinking volunteers started as early as 3:30am to collect birds that collide with buildings, adding more than 100,000 specimens to the Museum’s collection. Dave Willard, PhD, Collections Manager Emeritus, has carefully measured all the birds and recorded data by hand for more than 40 years. The goal was to build a densely sampled time series from both spring and fall migration. Willard and his colleagues analyzed these data and discovered the overall body sizes of more than 52 species of migratory birds are shrinking. One possible cause of this phenomenon is climate change. body sizes are often tied to climate. Within a species, individuals living in colder regions tend to be bigger than their counterparts in warmer regions. A New Home for SUE

In late 2018, the Museum unveiled a special new gallery in the Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet for SUE—the largest, most complete, and best-preserved T. rex ever found. Since SUE was first introduced to the world in 2000, visitors have consistently asked for more information about T. rex, and the context of SUE’s world. This new exhibition presents new information scientists have learned from the fossil’s unrivaled completeness. And it was the perfect time to update SUE’s skeleton and positioning with the most recent science. Upon entering SUE’s new domain, visitors are transported back 67 million years to a Late Cretaceous forest, where they come face-to-face with one of the world’s most notorious predators. A visual presentation explains what scientists know about SUE and T. rex from studying this remarkable fossil. Sensing stations allow visitors to experience how T. rex sounded, how its skin felt, and even how its breath smelled. The Griffin Dinosaur Experience, made possible by the generous support of the Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund, includes a special traveling exhibition, Antarctic Dinosaurs; Máximo the Titanosaur; updates to SUE the T. rex and the Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet; and new dinosaur To accompany the Griffin Dinosaur education programs. Experience, the Museum launched a special dinosaur toolkit for educators. This resource includes a collection of free digital resources to bring Field Museum science and collections to third through twelfth grade classrooms. Students can explore evolution, geologic time, and continental drift by interacting with digital 3D models of SUE and other specimens, visiting geologic periods to compare life at different times in an online educational game, and discovering how dinosaurs like Máximo evolved to be so large though interactive lessons. These resources enrich field trips by preparing students for a visit and can also stand alone as enhancements to any science curricula.

Dinosaur (Above) Interactive sensing stations in SUE’s new gallery allow guests to smell plants that Educator Toolkit would be found in a Cretaceous forest. Mission to the Mesozoic is part of the Griffin Dinosaur Experience, made possible by the generous support of the Kenneth C. Charitable Fund. 48 Field Museum 2019 Annual Report to Donors 49 HONOR ROLL

58 Field Museum 2019 Annual Report to Donors 59 “The Field Museum community is a rare constellation of science and humanity. Thank you, Your partnership anchors this dynamic institution and fuels journeys of discovery Richard that enable solutions for a brighter future rich in nature and culture.” and Jan! Richard W. Lariviere, PhD Field Museum President and CEO 2012–2020

After eight years as President and CEO of the Field Museum, Richard W. Lariviere, PhD, will retire in August 2020. His tenure saw a resurgence of the institution, which began with a strategic plan anticipating its 125th anniversary (2018-2019). He set the Museum on a path to financial sustainability, significantly growing the endowment through the $250 million Because Earth campaign. And, he refocused the Field’s mission on scientific excellence, strengthening its reputation as a global force for change. As part of the new Griffin Dinosaur Experience, the Field’s iconic Stanley Field Hall was transformed. The Museum relocated SUE to a major new exhibition suite; presented Máximo, the world’s largest dinosaur; and introduced hanging hydroponic gardens. “Richard’s impact at the Field Museum will benefit Chicagoans and the global science community for decades to come,” says Wilbur H. Gantz III, Chairman, Board of Trustees. Jan Lariviere, an accomplished science educator, advanced the Museum’s vision to be an accessible and inclusive place for all. As a docent and Women’s Board member, she led Museum tours for audiences with special abilities; assisted with science education for teachers in Chicago area schools; and introduced several civic groups to the Museum. The Field Museum gratefully acknowledges Richard and Jan’s enduring contributions to the institution.
