Foreword

I am very glad to know that the Publication Division of Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES) has brought out District Statistical Hand Book-2018. This book contains key statistical data on various socio-economic aspects of the District and will help as a reference book for the Policy Planners, Administrators, Researchers and Academicians. The present issue has been enriched with inclusions like various health programmes, activities of the SHGs, programmes under ICDS and employment generated under MGNREGS in different blocks of the District.

The District Statistical Hand Book, Jagatsinghpur’ 2018 is a step forward for evidence based planning with compilation of sub-district level information. It furnishes block-wise statistics on Area & Population, Agriculture, Co-operation, Forest, Fisheries, Live Stock & Animal Husbandry, Industry & Mining, Power, Transport & Communication, Education, Health and Family Welfare, Banking, Revenue, Police, Crime and Judiciary, Labour & Employment, Public Distribution, Local Bodies, Election, Women & Child Welfare Programme, Poverty Alleviation Programme, Disaster Statistics etc. Besides, the publication provides district wise information on selected indicators which helps to access the relative position of the district in the State.

5 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE: JAGATSINGHPUR

1. Introduction: Jagatsinghpur District was created on dt. 01.04.1993 as a result of division of erstwhile district into four separate districts. This district covers area of Jagatsinghpur sub-division along with two Tahasils split and separated from its parent district is under administrative control of central division. District Magistrate and collector is the head of district Administration. He is assisted by two Addl. district Magistrate posted at district Hqr Jagatsinghpur and for managing day to day administration and maintaining law and order.

2. Location: Jagatsinghpur district lies between 86o 3’ to 86ᴼ45’ East longitude and between 19o 58’ to 20o23’ North latitude. It is bounded by the district in north, district in south, in the east and in the west. It is named after by its headquarters viz, Jagatsinghpur. This district is also surrounded by river system the and Paika in the north and Devi in the south east. Due to its geographical situation, the district is congenial and prone to occurrence of various natural calamities like flood, cyclone or both and even drought.

3. Area and Population: The district has an area of 1668 sq. kms and 11.37 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 1.07 percent of the state territory and shares 2.71 percent of the state population. The density of population of the district is 682 per sq. kms and decadal growth rate of 7.5 for the state as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1292 villages (including 69 un-inhabited villages) covering 8 blocks, 8 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions and 194 GPs. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 248152 (21.80%) and schedule tribe population 7862 (0.70%) of the district. The literacy percentage of the district covers 86.6 against 72.9 of the state.

4. Climate: The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April to June and cold during December to January. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of July. Average annual rainfall of the district is 1838.8 m.m. in 2018 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1514.6 m.m.).

5. Agriculture: During the year 2017-18, the net area sown was 79 thousand hectares against 3863 thousand hectares of the state. During the year 2017-18, the production of paddy was 2319590 quintals, 148759 quintals mung, 2494 quintals biri, 404 quintals kulthi, 4466 quintals groundnuts, 68 quintals mustard, 9340 quintals potatoes and 90024 quintals sugarcane. The yield rate of Paddy was 29.37 Qt/ha, Mung 4.6Qt/ha, Biri 3.95 Qt/ha, Kulthi 4.59 Qt/ha, Groundnut 12.37 Qt/ha, mustard 2.71 Qt/ha, Potatoes 137.35 Qt/ha, Sugarcane 484 Qt/ha. During 2017-18, the total fertilizers used in Jagatsinghpur district is about 12044 MT with a

1 breakage of 6110 MT nitrogenous, 3909 MT phosphatic and 2025 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 68.08 Kg.

6. Irrigation: During, 2017-18, it is reported by District Agriculture Office that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 78285 hectares and 48024 hectares respectively through major / medium irrigation projects, minor irrigation project and other sources in the district..

7. Co-operation: The district has 113 agricultural Co-operative societies with a membership of 216839. The loan advances is to the tune of Rs. 33317.97 lakh and loan outstanding stood at Rs. 24926.38 lakhs as of 2017-18. The agricultural credit Co-operative societies as more or less evenly distributed across the 8 Blocks of the district. Besides that are 25 non-agricultural credit Co-operative Societies in the district of which 14 are in different blocks and 5 are Jagatsingpur Municipalities and 6 in Paradeep Municipalities.

8. Forest: District of Jagatsinghpur has abundant of Forest area that contributed 7.97% of the total geographical area of the district.

9. Veterinary Services: During 2017-18, Milk production is 126.77 thousand MT, production of eggs is 208.95 lakhs nos. and production of meat is 6.34 thousand MT in this district. During 2017-18, 13 nos. of Hospitals and Dispensaries, 98 nos. of Livestock Aid centers and 146 Artificial Insemination Centers were functioning in the district.

10. Industry and Mining: Jagatsinghpur district is not known for industrial activities. Iron ore found in the nearby districts i,e. Cuttack and Keonjhar are transported to Paradip and from there it is exported to other countries. There is also a large units like Paradip Phosphates Ltd. (PPL) and Indian Farmers fertilizer Co-operative (IFFCO) Besides during the year 2017-18, 1004 nos. of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) have established with total capital investment of about 3821.02 lakhs with 3143 nos. of Employment generated in Jagatsinghpur district.

11. Power: There are 1223 villages electrified as on 31.03.2018 which is covered 100 % to the total villages of the district.

12. Transport & Communication: During 2017-18, 103.40 Kms. of National Highways, 6.59 Kms. of state highways, 34.91 Kms. Major district roads, 199.41 kms of other district roads, 1533.62 Kms of Intra village roads, 1225 Kms of village roads, 1605.36 Kms of Inter village roads are operating in the district.

13. Education: During 2017-18, 981 nos. of primary schools, 557 nos. of Up-primary schools, 316 nos. of Secondary schools and 36 nos. of general colleges and 01 nos. of Diploma colleges are functioning in the district to impart general education. The teacher pupil ratio in the primary, upper primary, Secondary School stood at 12, 14 and 19 respectively.

14. Health: The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 1 no. DHH, 11 nos. CHC, 35 nos. PHC of the Allopathic medical institutions including 189 nos. of Sub Centre in the district during the year 2017-18. There were 17 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 11 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2017-18.

15. Banking: As on December, 2018, there were 160 nos. of All Banks having 7398.31 crore rupees deposit and 2782.75 crore rupees credit in the district. The district has banking branches network of 160 out of which 7 (4.38%) were in the urban area, 52 (32.5%) in semi-urban area and 101 (63.12%) in rural areas. The total number of ATMs in the district stood at 204.

16. Collection of Land Revenue: The total collection of land revenue in the district for 2017-18 was Rs. 311.21 lakh. The total collection of Tax in the district during 2017-18 was Rs. 470227.57 Lakh.

17. Poverty Alleviation Programme: In the district total no. of Job card issued was 1.29 Lakh and total no. of person days generated was 7.92 lakh during the year 2017-18.

18. Disaster Scenario: In terms of Disaster activity the district in graded as slight zone for wind & cyclone, high risk zone for flood, very high risk zone for drought, moderate risk zone for earthquake & high risk zone for accident.

 
