  • Benito Garozzo: the Myth by Mabel Bocchi
Benito Garozzo: The Myth by Mabel Bocchi Mabel Bocchi has taken the opportunity to interview the legendary Italian here in Estoril. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt, 78 years ago. He has lived in the United States since 1987 and in 1994 obtained double nationality. For his genius, his imagination and the results he has obtained, he is considered one of the best players ever, if not the best. Born under the sign of Virgo, he is divorced, has a son, Fulvio (46) and a daughter, Silvia (45). His partner since 30 years, both in life and in bridge, is Lea Dupont. He loves all sports and when young, practiced a number of them: soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and ping pong. Nowadays he plays golf and loves to bet on horses, a hobby that he appreciates more for the preparation it needs than for the bet itself. But his great passion remains bridge. Still not appeased by the huge number of successes obtained in his bridge career, already playing with the Rome Angelini Parioli Team, he offers himself again on the international stage with that blue uniform with which he won Your return to the Italian team seems quite a almost everything that can be won, in fact, playing miracle and made the entire bridge world, and not on the Italian Seniors Team. only that one, talk. For many years he has been planning to assemble an in-depth study of all known card play techniques and their classification. The only thing he lacked was time for the project; now, having recently retired, he has accom- plished his ambitious task. It has been my privilege to follow its progress and watch the book take shape. A book such as this should not to be put into a beginner’s hands, but it should become a well-thumbed reference source for all players who want to improve their game.

  • Les Longhurst
Les Longhurst Les, a world-class player, was a prominent figure in bridge circles in Sydney. He played regularly at the Wollstonecraft Bridge Club as well as other clubs on the North Shore. He first played for New South Wales in 1936, won the Interstate Teams in 1947 and came first in the 1975 Open Trials. This earned him a place in the Australian Open Team in the 1976 Bermuda Bowl and the 1976 World Open Teams Olympiad. Les was a most popular player, both as partner and opponent, and always the consummate gentleman. He was always keen to encourage promising players and until 1989 he had competed in every teams-of-three event held at the NSW Bridge Association. And that is why the Teams of Three was given his name. In 1976 the Lancia Team, headed by Omar Sharif and including three world champions from the legendary Blue Team, Giorgio Belladonna, Pietro Forquet and Benito Garozzo, toured Australia and played a test match against the Australian Team. On the following deal, Les judged better than his counterpart, Omar Sharif. • Giorgio Belladonna
Giorgio Belladonna Giorgio Belladonna (1923-1995) of Rome, Italy, was a public official and brid- ge professional with a long-running column in a leading Italian daily news-paper. In his youth, Belladonna was a useful footballer but it was bridge which was to be his great love and at which he was to become one of the all-time greats. A leading theoretician, Belladonna was the principle inventor of the Roman Club system of bidding and, with Benito Garozzo, created Super Precision, a complex strong club based method. Belladonna was the number one ranked player in the world for many years according to the WBF's masterpoint scheme and for many years would also have won a sizable number of votes from his peers as being the best player in the world. Certainly, he was regarded as being the best technical player a- round. I can also speak from personal experience in saying that he was one of the nicest players in top class bridge. The story of Giorgio Belladonna is really the story of a very great team, the Italian Blue Team. There have been other powerful teams in the history of bridge but the Blue Team were, without question, the finest team the world has yet seen and their achievements are without parallel. The Blue Team consisted of eight very fine players : Eugenio Chiaradia, Guglielmo Siniscalco, Mimmo D'Alelio, Walter Avarelli, Camillo Pabis-Ticci, Giorgio Belladonna, and Pietro Forquet and Benito Garozzo, who are also to be found in this volume. As important as the players was the non-playing captain, Carlo Alberto Perroux.
