Press Release October 9, 2013 – Philadelphia, PA Maxwell Football Club Expands Watch Lists The Maxwell Football Club today announced the expansion of its 2013 Watch Lists for both the 77th Maxwell Award and the 19th Chuck Bednarik Award. The original lists were comprised of players who were selected based on their performances during the 2012 season. As the 2013 season has progressed, the Club believes that several additional players warrant attention because of their noteworthy play. The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69’ and the NFL Hall of Fame 67’. Manti Te’o of Notre Dame was the recipient of the 76th Maxwell Award and he was also named as the winner of the 18th Chuck Bednarik Award for his outstanding performance during the 2012 season. Te’o is currently a member of the San Diego Chargers. Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on October 29th and three finalists for each award will be announced November 25th. The winners of the 2013 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 12th. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 7, 2014. The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2013 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards. .

2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List Unveiled
July 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Steve Richardson [email protected] 214-870-6516 2017 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY WATCH LIST UNVEILED DALLAS (FWAA) — The 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List boasts 103 defensive standouts from all 10 Division I FBS conferences, including four returning players from last season’s Football Writers Association of America All-America team. Christian Wilkins, a defensive tackle for defending national champion Clemson, and Florida State defensive back Tavarus McFadden are the only 2016 FWAA first-teamers on the list. Two other 2016 second-teamers – Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver and Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser – are included along with NIU defensive back Shawun Lurry, a 2015 First-Team FWAA All-America player. The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 20 players on the watch list, followed by the Big Ten (16), SEC (14), Pac-12 (13), Big 12 (11), American Athletic (10), Sun Belt (6), Mountain West (5), Independents (3), Mid-American (3) and Conference USA (2). The list includes 30 defensive backs, 29 linebackers, 25 defensive ends and 19 defensive tackles, all vying for the award representing college football’s best defensive player. Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the course of the season. As in previous seasons, the FWAA will announce a National Defensive Player of the Week each Tuesday throughout the season. If not already on the watch list, each week’s honored player will be added at that time. Robert Tiny Maxwell
VOL. I, No. IV MAY, 1988 Robert 'Tiny' Maxwell By Richard Pagano In 1905, 18 players died playing college football and 159 were seriously injured. One particular injured player probably caused more attention to be brought to the brutality of the game than any other. He was a lineman from Swarthmore College and his name was Robert "Tiny" Maxwell. Robert was a giant of a man in an era when most linemen weighed under 200 pounds. He tipped the scales at 250 pounds and stood 6'4" tall. The most significant game of that 1905 season was played at Franklin Field on Oct. 7 between Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania. Maxwell had played so well in 1904 that Penn assigned three players to cover him during this game, and on every play those three worked on Max- well and on him only. He took what was described as a savage beating. His nose was broken, his eyes swollen shut and his face dripped with blood. Bob courageously continued playing until near the end of the game, when his face was so bloody and swollen that he could no longer see, yet he never complained of the physical beating. A photograph of Maxwell's face shocked President Roosevelt into threaten- ing to abolish football, if the colleges themselves did not take steps to eliminate the brutality and reduce injuries. President Joseph Swain of Swarthmore responded by saying, "Swarthmore College stands for clean manly sport, shorn of all unnecessary roughness. The thrills and fascinations of his athletic exploits were chronicled by the mass media beginning in 1917 through the 1920s in a way that addressed the central themes of the mythic Great American Novel. Killinger’s personal and public life matched the cultural medley that defined the nation in the first quarter of the twentieth-century. His life plays outs as if it were a Horatio Alger novel, as the anxieties over turn-of-the- century immigration and urbanization, the uncertainty of commercializing formerly amateur sports, social unrest that challenged the status quo, and the resiliency of the individual confronting challenges of World War I, sport, and social alienation.
