Teaching Philosophy

The effectiveness of a teacher depends on how much a teacher and student can form an authentic partnership towards particular learning outcomes. First and foremost I embrace teaching as an opportunity to form a partnership with my students in which together we examine a subject through detailed analysis of the facts, thoughtful reflection on the material studied, dialog and interaction on the subject, willingness to apply what was learned by examining its direct relevance to our lives, and evaluation of individual and class competence. Success of competence is not only measured through memorization of facts, but also through the ability of each student to engage critical thinking skills, evaluating the full impact of a particular idea and its connection to the other ideas presented in class. My teaching philosophy is focused on a classical understanding of mastery of a subject, utilizing student centered approaches that considers the audience being taught, how best they can engage the material, and how best to objectively measure their competence and retention of the set objectives.
