Home » The Commentary 20 films on politics and the media 29 December 2009 | Email This Post | Print This Post BY JOSEPH PLANTA VANCOUVER – A few weeks ago, Sean Holman, the talented and prodigious editor of Public Eye Online was on the program to discuss the year that was and the year to come in provincial politics. We got to talking movies, when I’d asked him if he’d seen State of Play, the fine American film based on the British miniseries of the same name. He suggested two other films: The Candidate and Shattered Glass. This got me thinking about what films had the best depictions of politics, media, journalism and the writing process. I came up with a few, and limited myself to twenty which seemed a workable number. Twenty favourites, as it were. Of course the list is subjective, and is in no particular order. I suspect if I ever get to watching Dr. Strangelove, or The Front Page, or Bob Roberts, or Silver City, they might be added to the list, perhaps even bumping off something already here. There’s nothing on this list that was made for television, otherwise the House of Cards trilogy would be here, as well as the original British miniseries State of Play, The Thick of It, The West Wing, and of course, the Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister tandem. Perhaps Mr. Holman or others would like to add to or debate my choices.

Press Contact: Harry Forbes 212.560.8027, [email protected] Lindsey Bernstein 212.560.6609, [email protected] Great Performances: The Hollow Crown Bios Tom Hiddleston After he was seen in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire by Lorraine Hamilton of the notable actors’ agency Hamilton Hodell, Tom Hiddleston was shortly thereafter given his first television role in Stephen Whittaker’s adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby (2001) for ITV, starring Charles Dance, James D’Arcy and Sophia Myles. Roles followed in two one-off television dramas co-produced by HBO and the BBC. The first was Conspiracy (2001), a film surrounding the story of the Wannsee Conference in 1942 to consolidate the decision to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The film prompted Tom’s first encounter with Kenneth Branagh who took the lead role of Heydrich. The second project came in 2002 in the critically acclaimed and Emmy Award- winning biopic of Winston Churchill The Gathering Storm, starring Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave. Tom played the role of Randolph Churchill, Winston’s son, and cites that particular experience – working alongside Finney and Redgrave, as well as Ronnie Barker, Tom Wilkinson, and Jim Broadbent – as extraordinary; one that changed his perspective on the art, craft and life of an actor. Tom graduated from RADA in 2005, and within a few weeks was cast as Oakley in the British independent film Unrelated by first-time director Joanna Hogg. Unrelated tells the story of a woman in her mid-40s who arrives alone at the Italian holiday home of an extended bourgeois family.

  • Press Release 5Th June 2008
THE PHAROS TRUST Registered UK Charity Number 1090325 Press Release 5th June 2008 Text shown in italics has been taken from the press release issued by Working Title Pictures. HARWICH HISTORIC LIGHTSHIP TO STAR IN HOLLYWOOD MOVIE The historic Lightvessel LV18, has returned to Harwich after starring in a new blockbuster film. Filming for the new Richard Curtis movie The Boat That Rocked has been taking place in and around the Dorset harbour of Portland over the past 5 weeks. The Boat That Rocked is written by Richard Curtis, the Emmy, BAFTA and WGA Award-winning filmmaker whose projects have included films from Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary and Love Actually to Mr. Bean and Blackadder. It will also be directed by Curtis, his second directorial outing, but first non-rom-com. The film, based on the story of two offshore pirate radio ships in 1966 features actors, Rhys Ifans, Kenneth Brannagh, Bill Nighy and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In 1966, arguably British pop music's finest era, the BBC played only two hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio blasted rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people - more than half the population of Britain - listened to these pirates every single day. The Boat That Rocked is an ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between the young people of the '60s and pop music. It's about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz.

  • The Worricker Trilogy: Turks & Caicos and Salting the Battlefield
Interview with Sir David Hare, Writer/Director of The Worricker Trilogy: Turks & Caicos and Salting the Battlefield Sundays, November 9 & 16, 2014 on MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY One of England’s foremost playwrights, screenwriters, and film directors, Sir David Hare completes his Worricker Trilogy on MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY with two more gripping dramas charting the exploits of spy-on-the-run Johnny Worricker, played by Bill Nighy. Turks & Caicos and Salting the Battlefield marvelously thicken the plot started by Page Eight, which first aired on MASTERPIECE in 2011. The two films bring Johnny together with fellow spook Margot Tyrrell (Helena Bonham Carter) and lead them to a heart-stopping denouement. It’s all in a day’s work for Hare, Academy Award® screenwriting nominee for The Hours and The Reader. Actually, the writing and directing were “completely exhausting,” he says in this interview with MASTERPIECE, in which he discusses his inspiration for the trilogy, the amazing cast, the spy genre, and much else. What is the genesis of the Worricker trilogy? When I wrote the first one Page[ Eight], the producer at the BBC said, “We can either make a feature film, in which case it will take three years to put the money and cast together. Or we can be filming in six months if you agree that it’s television.” And I said, “Okay, let’s do it on television.” Then the BBC immediately said, “Can we please have six?”—because quantity is something television understands. And I said, “No! It takes me a year to write one of these.” In the end, we all enjoyed ourselves so much on the first one that I agreed to do two more.

  • Love Actually (2003) Major Credits: Director: Richard
Love Actually (2003) Major Credits: Director: Richard Curtis Screenplay: Richard Curtis Cinematography: Michael Coulter Editor: Nick Moore Cast: Bill Nighy (Billy Mack), Gregor Fisher (Joe), Hugh Grant (The Prime Minister), Martine McCutcheon (Natalie), Colin Firth (Jamie), Lúcia Moniz (Aurelia), Emma Thompson (Karen), Alan Rickman (Harry), Liam Neeson (Daniel), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Sam), Kris Marshall (Colin), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Peter), Andrew Lincoln (Mark), Keira Knightly (Juliet), Laura Linney (Sarah), Rodrigo Santoro (Karl), Martin Freeman (John), Joanna Page (Judy), Billy Bob Thornton (US President), Heike Makatsch (Mia), Claudia Schiffer (Carol) Production Background: Richard Curtis had previously written the very successful Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999), and Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001); Love Actually was the first film he directed from his own screenplay. A paradigmatic ensemble piece, Love Actually incorporates at least twenty significant parts to tell nine—count ‘em!—integrated (if somewhat contrived) stories about the permutations of Love. Note how often the characters speak the word “actually.” Contemporary audiences familiar with Love Actually as a Christmas classic—in the UK as much as in America—may be surprised to learn the film received largely mixed reviews when it first appeared (a mediocre 55 on Metacritic). Critics generally descried its sentimentality and the profusion of plots, which tested credibility and dampened sustained involvement in any one of the stories. Even those who went along with the film’s “unrelenting schmaltz,” labeled it “Fluff, Glorious Fluff” (Ella Taylor, LA Weekly). Today Love Actually has become, for many, a beloved holiday tradition, a status that may obscure its artistic achievements.
